In Jade's bedroom, a nearby radio presents announcements including one that promotes a Hillyan News website. To help promote the game around its release in 2003, Ubisoft launched an official Hillyan News website full of short articles and blurbs pertaining to the planet of Hillys and the in-game universe, presumably published weekly between October 2 and December 1, 2003. In 2023, a webpage on Nintendo of Japan's website was created to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Family Computer. One of the subpages is a list of nearly every game published by Nintendo for the system, including those released exclusively for the Disk System peripheral. The only other known official list of Nintendo-published Famicom games available is the Chronicle in the Japanese version of Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
However, the Famicom 40th Anniversary subpage omits several games that were included in Brawl's Chronicle. These include:
• Popeye, as well as its spin-off titled Popeye no Eigo Asobi, likely due to licensing issues with King Features.
• Spartan X (released as Kung Fu outside of Japan), likely due to the game being a license, as it is based on the movie Wheels on Meals.
• Miho Nakayama's Tokimeki High School, likely due to the game heavily featuring real-life Japanese idol, Miho Nakayama.
• Ginga no Sannin, a port of the home computer game The Earth Fighter Rayieza by Enix. It is not known why this game was excluded from the list.
• All re-releases of standard Famicom games for the Disk System (such as Super Mario Bros., Tennis, and Mahjong). The Famicom cartridge re-release of The Legend of Zelda is also omitted.

The September 2000 issue of Nintendo Power contains a "Nintendo Power Online" section on page 12, featuring an article titled "Mamma Mia! It's Waluigi!" The accompanying text introduces Waluigi to readers, reveals that he has his own website: www.waluigi.com, and claims to have an upcoming online game called "Waluigi's Toenail Clipping Party".At the time of the Nintendo Power issue's release, www.waluigi.com was identical to the official website for Mario Tennis, www.mariotennis.com. One of the files hosted on the Mario Tennis website was the Adobe Flash file "toenails_coming.swf", which is an advertisement for the game instead titled "Waluigi's Foot Fault" depicting him showing his bare feet and unkempt toenails (he also occasionally blinks). Another file hosted on the website was "toenails.swf", which was supposedly the game itself. Catalogued alongside this file are two additional .swf files named "paint_the_lines" and "deface_painting", which could be evidence of other Flash games hosted on the Mario Tennis website.
However, the waluigi.com domain has since been turned into a redirect to the official Nintendo website. The toenails.swf file was not preserved, and as of 2023 has not resurfaced.

The Pac-Man Google Doodle was not properly optimized for Firefox users, which led to the Pac-Man sound effects playing in sequence unprompted, even if Google was on a different tab, with many users mistaking the ghosts' movement noises for cartoon police sirens and believing to have caught a virus.

During the prerelease of Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2, a set of placeholder pages were found on the game's website relating to different characters. Most notable of these pages was one for Helga, a character who was in the first Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl and hadn't been seen in All-Star Brawl 2 marketing materials or leaks at that point - this led a lot of fans to believe that Helga would be returning. Ultimately, she would only be a background cameo on the Aquarium stage.

The Neave Interactive port of Pac-Man was reskinned and packaged as a new game by many Flash websites. Most of these were amateur jobs, and among those cheap ports existed a reskin of the game on the official 4Kids TV website to promote the 2003 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series, titled Mutant Munchies.

Upon the release of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, many Wario fans were disappointed and shocked to see that his moveset had a powerful farting attack, something that seemed unprecedented for the character to fans in the US - In Japan, Wario's association with toilet humor in promotional material dates back to Wario Land II at least, with marketing for Wario Land 4 being when the gross-out humor could be considered most prominent, with the game having golden poop stickers included in its manual, and the official Japanese website going into immense detail on the size and shape of Wario's fecal matter:"Hey! Stop it with the dirty jokes! Is something I should say!! However…since it’s a good question I’m going to answer it! Last night, I put down 10 plates of liver sauteed with leek, 10 crapes, 10 plates of rice curry. My morning poop was very yellow, it was a good color and a big one too! It almost touched the seat of the toilet! I know! The smell is a mix of tsukemono [pickled vegetables], raw eggs, carassius sushi. Try smelling it!"
Up until Brawl's release, Wario had not been associated with vulgar humor that much within actual games, and the only glimpses US audiences would've received of Wario's slobbish side in marketing would have been in animated commercials where he was animated to have saliva dripping out of his mouth (something that could be easily disregarded given that Nintendo used gross-out gags to market most of their titles in the US at the time, even for less edgy characters such as Kirby and Yoshi) and - by an extreme stretch - a subplot in WarioWare: Touched! revolving around Wario's bad oral hygiene. Following Brawl, farting would be cemented as one of Wario's signature abilities in a variety of Mario games.

In 2018, rapper Soulja Boy attempted to sell his own line of video game consoles, collectively called the SouljaGame line, sold for $149.99 for a console and $99.99 for a handheld. Advertising claimed that the consoles would be compatible with a variety of consoles' games, including modern platforms like the PlayStation Vita, Nintendo 3DS, and Nintendo Switch. These, quite obviously, did not have such compatibility, but rather were a generic retro emulator console one could find on small business-oriented retail websites such as Wish and AliExpress loaded with pirated and modified games from the Neo Geo; NES; Game Boy Advance; Game Boy Color; Game Boy; Sega Genesis; SNES; Master System; Game Gear; and PlayStation libraries sold at a markup. The only difference from these pre-existing consoles being a photograph of Soulja printed onto the box. Soulja Boy would eventually stop selling SouljaGame consoles, with the website for the console redirecting to Nintendo's 3DS website.

Elf Bowling co-creator Dan "Ferg" Ferguson created a Wikipedia article under the name "Itzaferg" and inserted self-aggrandizing information about his history with the franchise to its page, as well as adding articles that were soon deleted for his company Blockdot and its lesser known, non-Elf Bowling works.
After this, Matthew Lichtenwalter, who bought the rights to Elf Bowling in 2001, attempted to claim that the portable compilation, Elf Bowling 1 & 2 was "unauthorized" using Wikipedia as a platform, writing a signed quote from himself on the Wikipedia article for Elf Bowling, as well as saying that he "created the series [after]" he bought it out.
It seems highly unlikely that the Elf Bowling ports were actually unauthorized, as no legal action was taken, nor did any of the developers or publishers of the release attempt to hide their work on it at any point.

On August 24, 2017, a video was uploaded by gaming news outlet VentureBeat where lead writer Dean Takahashi, who specializes in general industry articles, strategy games and first/third person shooters and normally does not cover platformers or sidescrolling action games because by the outlet's own admission he was extremely bad at them, recorded a gameplay demonstration of him playing the Gamescom 2017 demo for Cuphead due to him being the only one on staff at Gamescom. This footage is notorious for the first two and a half minutes where he struggles to complete the game's tutorial, before struggling to play for another 23 minutes under conditions that were made intentionally easier for the game's demo such as increased health and instant access to some stronger unlockable charms like Spread. VentureBeat knew the footage was bad, but uploaded it anyways and drew attention to Takahashi's poor gameplay in the video title, calling it "shameful". However, VentureBeat initially did not explain the full context of the footage in the video description, and due to Gamescom being held one month prior to Cuphead's release, the clip was passed around out of context leading people to believe he was doing a full review of the game and trying to make a point of it being too difficult. In reality, the video was posted alongside an article about the demo by Takahashi to VentureBeat that regularly acknowledges his poor skill at the game; he also called Cuphead a fun game that showed "why making hard games that depend on skill is like a lost art". Regardless, the footage still drew extreme negative backlash and harassment towards him and claims that he was unfit to be a game journalist. Takahashi's response to the controversy spurred more controversy after he accused people attacking the footage of being connected to the 2014 #Gamergate movement, when one week prior to responding, he published an article promoting the idea of a "leisure economy" that stems from game journalists among others being paid to play games, and promoting the fact that he had been reviewing games for 21 years up to that point.

On July 17, 2023, Neopets was purchased from NetDragon through a management buyout deal by Dominic Law, the Neopets Chief Metaverse Officer and former Director of New Markets at both NetDragon and Cherrypicks. This lead to the formation of "World of Neopia, Inc.", a company comprised of team members from both Neopets and Neopets Metaverse, with Law serving as CEO. As part of this, it was announced that Neopets had received $4 million in investment money in early 2023, with additional funding from the management buyout equipping World of Neopia, Inc. to make "meaningful changes in pursuit of a Neopian renaissance." These changes include revamping the homepage and creating the 2024 mobile game "World of Neopets".

As an early April Fools' joke, the fan-run Facebook/Blogspot group Operation: Power Up made a fake Super Smash Bros. website character page based on the ones used in the official website to "reveal" Nester, the mascot of Nintendo Power magazine, as a playable character. While the page itself is notably accurate to the source material, the screenshots shown at the bottom are of very low quality: not only is Nester's model poorly made, he's only ever shown alone in the pics and is clearly pasted on in some of them.

www.warioworld.com was an official Nintendo website made as a hub for developers and publishers licensed to work on Nintendo hardware. The site used Wario as a mascot, something that may not seem strange as his profession is designing video games in the WarioWare series. However, the site was opened in 1997, predating WarioWare by multiple years, and also predates the Wario World game for GameCube. Instead of renaming the site to avoid confusion and using the URL for the game's US promotional site, the URL www.wario-world.com was used for the game's website, something that more than likely caused confusion for Wario fans. WarioWorld was closed in 2016, having recieved very few visual updates since the 1990s, and now redirects to a more modern and professionally designed Nintendo developer hub.

The Game Boy Advance version of Final Fantasy IV contains the line “I’ll bet you and your goons wrecked them up something awful.” This is a reference to the Something Awful forums, a popular site in the 2000s, whose members are collectively referred to as goons.

On February 9, 2007, nearly a year after the game's release, director and series creator Shigesato Itoi set up an online quiz for fans who had completed the game, testing their knowledge about it. One question asks which Thief Jujitsu technique Wess uses, with the options being:• "Super Sunset Miracle Chop Again"

None of this corresponds with anything seen in the final game, and a note attached to the question clarifies that it was based on something that was removed during development, telling fans to ignore it. Because the intended answer was never confirmed by anyone on the Mother 3 development team, it is unknown what the true name of the technique was.
