Earthworm Jim: Menace 2 the Galaxy
1
Earthworm Jim: Menace 2 the Galaxy has unused text pertaining to Game Boy Printer support. It's thought that this feature would have allowed players to print out level passwords.
Color a Dinosaur
1
Attachment A prototype for Color a Dinosaur shows that the game was originally called Paint Me! and used black backgrounds instead of white. Despite the title not signifying that the game features dinosaurs, there is nothing to suggest that the game was ever going to feature any pages other than dinosaurs, as all the pages on the prototype are also dinosaurs.

According to series co-creator Ed Boon in a video/interview on Mortal Kombat's YouTube channel on May 19, 2023, Mortal Kombat 1's name was chosen because the developers consider it the beginning of a new universe and not a continuation of the Mortal Kombat 11 story. The characters have completely different roles in this new timeline, and the title is meant to emphasize that.
Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
1
On September 25, 2010, Level-5 employee Jiro Ishii accidentally ousted the game's existence via a tweet to Square Enix employee Jin Fujisawa that stated in Japanese:

"Huh? Oh, Gyakuten XX. I'm making it, with Mr. Takumi!"

This started rumors of a new Ace Attorney game being developed by Level-5, due to the trend of newer Capcom games from established franchises being developed externally (i.e. DmC: Devil May Cry being developed by Ninja Theory). Ishii quickly covered up the mistake later that day, tweeting out:

"A misunderstanding seems to be spreading, so let me say that I'm currently working only on Time Travelers."

The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles
2
Due to long-standing copyright issues regarding the character Sherlock Holmes brought about by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's estate (which had previously delayed the games' release), the international release of The Great Ace Attorney games changed his name to "Herlock Sholmes". According to series creator Shu Takumi, this was done as an allusion to "Arsène Lupin versus Herlock Sholmes", a story collection by Maurice Leblanc.

Following the announcement of the name "Herlock Sholmes", various memes came about surrounding the character and the circumstances for the renaming in regards to copyright law. This got to the point where major news outlets began covering it, with some noting that the goofy-sounding name "fit with the comedic and sometimes irreverent tone of the Ace Attorney series, even if it does leave a few things lost in translation."

Attachment According to character designer Takaya Imamura, each of the original Star Fox team members were modeled after his fellow Nintendo staff members at the time:

•Fox was based on Shigeru Miyamoto, with Miyamoto said to have a fox-like face.
•Falco was based on Tsuyoshi Watanabe, as the development team laughed over how his nose stuck out like a beak.
•Peppy was based on Katsuya Eguchi, with Eguchi said to have a mouth like a hare.
•Slippy was based on Yoichi Yamada, with Yamada said to have large, round eyes.

Imamura has also stated that he based Andross on his "boss at the time". It remains unknown who at Nintendo he is specifically talking about, though it's been long rumored that Andross was intended as a caricature of then-Nintendo president Hiroshi Yamauchi, who was known for his cutthroat and ruthless ways. However, it's also been speculated that Imamura is referring to Hiroshi Ikeda, the then-manager of Nintendo R&D4 (later EAD) who was also Miyamoto's boss, though it's worth pointing out that Ikeda had stepped down from his position in 1992.

Dance Dance Revolution 2ndMix

2
The song "LET THEM MOVE" is one of the few original songs by composer and former DDR sound producer Naoki Maeda to not be revived after its inclusion in 4th Mix. This is due to him feeling ashamed by the song. When asked in an interview on what his favorite memory of working on the Dance Dance Revolution Series was, he jokingly answered "LET THEM MOVE" before pretending to self-destruct..

The distaste towards this song also carried over to Jason Enos, manager of Dance Dance Revolution's American Console Titles. He attempted to lobby the song's exclusion from Dance Dance Revolution Konamix to no avail:

"[When] they wanted to put Let Them Move on Konamix, oh my gosh, I just went nuts. I sent the poll results. I was like, "Look. See the poll results? Let Them Move? Rank: Zero! Bottom of the list! Please do not include!" I just told them to please not include this song in there. Everyone hates this song. Do not put it in there. They wanted to put it in for the training, because it's a real easy song, and since it was going to be in training, they thought it would have been stupid not to make it a selectable song. Okay, well I can understand that, but I told them, "Can we just get something else besides that song?" But no, they kinda like that song. No one else likes it though. That song, I'm not very pleased about. Then again, I don't [want] any people ever selecting that song in the public".

1
According to composer Jonathan Dunn, RoboCop's theme song was concieved at his mother's restaurant when it was closed at night after its weekly live jazz night:

"At the time I was still living at home, which was above my mother's restaurant in Preston. We had a piano in the restaurant as my mum would have live jazz nights once a week. I would often sit at the piano after the restaurant was closed and come up with a few ideas. One of those was the chord riff for RoboCop. To this day if I'm near a piano I'm always tempted to play it; it's a lovely nostalgic feeling."

He did note how unfitting the song was to source material, but did not explain why it was chosen for the game.
Palworld
2
Contrary to popular belief, the Pokémon franchise was not the main inspiration for Palworld. According to Pocket Pair CEO Takuro Mizobe, the game was actually based on Ark: Survival Evolved, which also had monster companions in the form of dinosaurs. Similarly, the survival mechanics and in-game tasks were inspired by Rust, and the creature designs were inspired by the Dragon Quest series.

1
While Bubsy 3D is often considered to have killed the Bubsy franchise until its revival in the late 2010s, the franchise was not killed by Accolade as one may expect. Accolade wanted a new installment titled Bubsy 4 (Bubsy in Fractured Furry Tales not being considered part of the franchise's official numbering) after Bubsy 3D's release, but series creator Michael Berlyn was the one who pulled the plug on the franchise, believing that Bubsy 2 and Bubsy 3D had dealt too much damage to it:

"I pitched [Sparky and Bolt, an unmade, Jetsons-inspired game] to Accolade, and Accolade said, "Ummmmm, I don’t think so. We’re more interested in a Bubsy 4." And I said, "I really think Bubsy’s dead by now. Between what you guys did with Bubsy 2 and what I did with Bubsy 3D, it’s time to move on." They didn’t agree."
Star Fox: Assault
1
Attachment The E3 2003 reveal trailer for what would become Star Fox: Assault showcased what appears to be a first-person perspective mode, which ended up being discarded in the final game. However, this scrapped first-person mode can still be accessed in all versions of the game through hacking. It is not fully complete, but has almost full functionality.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance
1
In the international release of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, every character's blood is colored red whereas in the Japanese release, all blood is colored white. Cyborg-based characters bleeding white blood in the Japanese release is consistent with the setting of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, where Raiden also used white blood. This also has an effect on Jetstream Sam's death scene, where he notably bleeds red blood compared to everyone else's white blood, revealing him to be almost purely human. An explanation of sorts for why every character's blood is red in the international version is provided in a codec call with Doktor during File R-01: Coup d'Etat:

"Organic muscle fiber which allows extraction of nutrients from the bloodstream does exist, but it requires artificial blood for sufficient power output. This so-called "white blood" requires dialysis, and was mostly phased out once cyborg technology became mainstream."

Extra clarification is added to Sam's death scene as well due to this.

Star Fox Zero
subdirectory_arrow_right Star Fox Guard (Game)
1
Attachment When Star Fox Zero was originally scheduled to come out in the holidays of 2015, it didn't feature a map screen or branching paths, or even (by default) Smart Bombs, two core components of classic Star Fox titles such as the original Star Fox on the SNES or Star Fox 64.

Shigeru Miyamoto's original vision for Star Fox Zero, when it began development in 2014, was for it to be more like an episodic TV show (as in, a linear set of episodic, bite-sized missions), similar to his biggest inspiration for Star Fox, the 1965 TV series "Thunderbirds", as opposed to earlier games like Star Fox 64 that were designed more like an epic, longer movie. At E3 2014, he compared the tried-and-true Star Fox gameplay as the "primetime programming", while the quirkier, more experimental fare (referring to Star Fox Guard) as the "late-night programming". As explained by Miyamoto in early 2016, the initial decision to remove Smart Bombs as a core game mechanic was to streamline and simplify the gameplay, to force the player to focus more on using their own techniques and skills to get through the levels. Originally, Smart Bombs would have only been available through the special SNES Arwing mode only accessible through the Fox McCloud amiibo figure or alternatively, collecting all of the game's 70 medals.

However, after Star Fox Zero's initial poor showing at E3 2015, particularity from die-hard Star Fox 64 fans, it was decided to delay the game and attempt to make it more like a long-form movie in the similar vein of SF64, by including an arcade mode (that is unlocked by playing through the story mode, a single linear list of missions like what Miyamoto had intended) with additional branching pathways and also the re-inclusion of Smart Bombs as a universal gameplay mechanic.

The titular character in Bayonetta was at one point considered as a guest character for the game. According to Producer Hisaharu Tago, she was scrapped because her hair attacks were too elaborate to include.
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
2
Attachment According to Tropical Freeze's creative director Vince Joly, the development team had seriously considered including Enguarde the swordfish from prior Donkey Kong Country titles as a ridable animal buddy, but ultimately dropped him to focus more on the playable Kong characters.

"We were thinking that bringing back the familiarity that players experienced in Donkey Kong Country Returns would be a good way for us to further strengthen their love for these characters. We felt this was the right choice over adding different buddies in their stead, and we believed the introduction of the other Kongs filled the need for expanding the character lineup and adding new player mechanics. However, we would have loved to have introduced some new animal buddies. Like Enguarde, for instance, who did come close to being added."
