Final Fantasy VII
2
When returning to the Sector 5 Church, two different images of Aeris may be seen. One appears for a split second in the center of screen before disappearing, while in the other Aeris is seen tending the flowers before Cloud moves closer. It has been speculated this is meant to be her "ghost".
Final Fantasy VII

Aeris, after being brought back via a cheat device, has dialogue in discs 2 and 3. This seems to imply that either Spoiler:she was not meant to die at the end of disc 1 or that Spoiler:she was intended to be revived later in the game.
Super Mario Galaxy 2

Attachment A popular long-standing fan theory about Super Mario Bros. 3 was that it was actually an elaborate stage play.

The commonly cited evidence that supports this theory include:
•The game's title screen starts with the rise of curtains, and the game ends with the fall of curtains, as well as curtain calls for each World and several characters during the end credits
•Some platforms are hanging down from the "sky" by wires implying it's scenery being hung from the ceiling
•Some platforms are bolted to the wall and cast shadows against the "sky" suggesting it's a backdrop
•If Mario/Luigi kneels on white block platforms for six seconds, he will fall behind them and can walk behind the scenery
•Some platforms are sticking out through carved-out slots in the backdrop suggesting they are being controlled by hidden machines behind the set
•Each regular stage ends by exiting stage left and going "backstage" into the dark goal area
•Every injury or death in a stage is Mario/Luigi messing up the scene (the "Mario was never once in any real danger" part in the attached image is not necessarily true as unintended injuries and deaths can happen in theatre)

One overlooked piece of circumstantial evidence that supports this theory concerns the fact that the Kings of each World that are transformed into different creatures by the Koopalings are never actually seen being transformed into creatures, or transforming back into humans after Mario defeats a Koopaling. The way every Koopaling defeat plays out shows Mario falling from the airship holding the King's magic wand, the scene fades to black, and then the lights come back up inside the castle showing the King already transformed back into a human before either the wand or Mario return to the castle. This suggests that the Kings were never transformed in the first place, because they were all actors waiting to get into place for their scenes, and the transformations are the suspension of disbelief. It should be noted that the Game Boy Advance version of the game partially discredits this by adding cutscenes showing each King being turned into creatures by the Koopalings, but they are still are not seen being transformed back into humans.

In a Q&A interview to promote the release of Super Mario Maker in 2015, Shigeru Miyamoto confirmed the theory, that the game was all a performance.

Skull and Bones
1
Despite incorporating several elements common in a live-service game (i.e. an in-game store, a battle pass, seasonal events, and premium currency), Skull and Bones was given a price tag of $70. Yves Guillemot, the CEO of Ubisoft, justified this during an investors call before the game's release, stating:

"It's a very big game and we feel that people will really see how vast and complete that game is. So it's a really full triple-A, quadruple-A game that will deliver in the long run."

It's worth noting, however, that the game cost $200 million due to its decade-long development, with Ubisoft admitting that they did not think they would be able to break even due to its poor launch. Knowing this, it can be inferred that Ubisoft insisted on referring to Skull and Bones as a "quadruple-A" title not because of the scope of the project, but for how abnormally long it took to produce and raised the price to recoup costs, because this was not the first or only game they called a AAAA title in the past. It was discovered as far back as 2020 on the LinkedIn pages of several Ubisoft employees that they referred to Skull and Bones, the also long-delayed Beyond Good & Evil 2, and later Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, all games with development times lasting at least six years, as AAAA titles in their work experience.

Golf
subdirectory_arrow_right Nintendo Switch (Platform)
1
Within the Nintendo Switch firmware prior to Version 4.0.0 (for Japanese, US and European systems only), there is a hidden NES emulator stub called "flog" that can be unlocked under very specific conditions. flog can only be unlocked on the Home Screen and when the console's internal clock is set to July 11th (if the date is changed in System Settings, but the console is connected to the internet and can see the actual date, this method will not work). The method to unlock it involves detaching the Joy-Cons from the console, holding them pointing forwards/downwards, then moving them to a vertical position and holding it for a few seconds. This gesture may take some time to hone due to it being a specific movement tracked by the Joy-Cons, but when it is matched, the system will check to see if flog is installed. When checked, an audio clip of a man saying "chokusetsu" ("直接"), the Japanese word for "direct", will play and the screen will cut to black and launch the 1984 NES title Golf. This emulator is unique in that it includes specific instructions in English and Japanese on how to play depending on how the Joy-Cons are held, and has a more stripped-down and simplistic appearance than the emulators that would be used for NES games on Nintendo Switch Online. Pressing the Home button while playing Golf will return you to the Home Screen without any visible software running there.

With Version 4.0.0, Nintendo removed all of the code required to launch flog and play Golf, but the company seemed unusually hesitant to even acknowledge its existence when asked by news outlets. One month before its removal, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Amie released two statements regarding it when asked by Kotaku:

"So, two comments on this. It was identified by folks playing around in the firmware. We've got nothing officially to announce for that content or what the plans are for that content. So that's that. Certainly anything that pays respect to my friend Mr. Iwata is something that is near and dear to me personally, but in terms of that execution and what it was meant to do or what the plans are, we've got nothing to announce."

"I'm struck whenever I go back to Kyoto and spend time in our headquarters and spend time in the offices where Mr. Iwata, myself and others would be meeting. It's always personally touching. And so, again, no comment on that particular execution."

While this seems to allude that the secret emulator and Golf's inclusion were not authorized within Nintendo, this all but confirms that their purpose was to act as a tribute to Nintendo's late CEO Satoru Iwata. Iwata, who programmed Golf and previously hosted the company's Nintendo Direct showcase series, passed away on July 11th, 2015, with the method to unlock the emulator mimicking a gesture he used during Nintendo Directs. Japanese fans on social media referred to the Easter egg as an "omamori", an amulet purchased at Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples in Japan that if kept close are said to protect the bearer and bring good luck, speculating that Golf was included by Iwata as a secret charm to watch over every Nintendo Switch unit after his death.

Don't Buy This
1
Race Ace is the only game in Don't Buy This to have been released as an individual cassette prior to the compilation's release, credited to Tony Rainbird, who helped create the Firebird label that Don't Buy This was published under, meaning its inclusion may have been an in-joke.
Bubsy 3D

There is an unused death cutscene in the files of Bubsy 3D of Bubsy falling through a floor. This may have been an animation for falling through pits, or suggest that fall-damage was at one point going to return as a mechanic from Bubsy in Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind.

Attachment When Pokémon Black 2 and Pokémon White 2 first released in Japan, fake leaks were posted on various websites claiming to be ROMs of the game, but in reality contained an FMV of a parody of the theme song to the Disney Channel series Cory in the House. The parody featured several of the games' characters and other memes at the time superimposed over the actors' heads, including talk show host Stephen Colbert, a caricature of the Pokémon fan website Serebii.net with a Trollface superimposed over it, and legacy Pokémon character Gary Oak. Before the title card of the show appears at the end, a barely visible screenshot of a post from the imageboard 4chan can be seen featuring the box art of the Nintendo DS game adaptation of the show, implying that the parody and fake ROMs originated from there. The video also features several scrolling text statements including:

• "Amber killed Gary" - supposedly referring to an incident on 4chan's dedicated Pokémon board /vp/ starting on August 26, 2010 where several posters using Gary Oak and Mewtwo as avatars tried to "revive" or "kill" the anime-only character Amber from The Uncut Story of Mewtwo's Origin by trying to predict their post numbers in advance.
• "SHE IS BLACK ?!?" - referring to Pokémon Black & White Gym Leader Lenora.
• "GIANT HAIR EVERYWHERE" - on the following shot with four Bouffalants superimposed over Mount Rushmore.
• "FINAL GYM LEADER (IT HAS BEEN SEREBII CONFIRMED)" - referring to Iris, the last Gym Leader in Pokémon White and seems to be referring to leaks from the first Pokémon Black and Pokémon White games.
• "THIS FLOATING TEXT IS UP IN YO' SCREEN DAWG"
• "AMERICA" - on a shot of Stephen Colbert.

An upload of the fake ROM's FMV on YouTube dates back to September 16, 2010, two days before Pokemon Black & White's release date in Japan, and features several comments mentioning 4chan and /vp/ on top of the references in the video, suggesting that the hoax actually dates back to the release of the first Pokémon Black and Pokémon White, although discussion of this FMV from that time does not appear to have been preserved. While this ROM is also not known to be preserved (though its contents are), as recently as 2018 there have been reports of ROM dumps of Pokémon White 2 being silently modified to include Cory in the House references, including NPCs with dialogue featuring the lyrics to the show's theme song.

Dead or Alive 2

Attachment Alongside being in the same key, Ryu Hayabusa's theme music "The shooted" and Ein's theme "Vigaku" both feature a recurring guitar solo. While "Vigaku" plays a few different arrangements of its solo throughout the song, the solo as heard in "The shooted" is played the same way throughout the majority of the song except for the very end, where a different take on it is played. When comparing the primary solos in both "Vigaku" and "The shooted", while both solos play through a similar scale of notes, there are some individual notes in each solo that are different to distinguish them from each other rather than fully recycling them. In the game's soundtrack released on CD, "The shooted" is placed ahead of "Vigaku", suggesting that the solo heard in Ein's theme is meant to be an interpolation of the solo in Ryu's theme. As such, it appears the entire point of these solos being so similar is to highlight the connection between Ein and Ryu as friends that the amnesiac Ein forgot in the game's storyline. The solo that is repeated in the same way in "The shooted" seems to represent who Ryu is, while the different interpolated versions of the solo in "Vigaku" may represent Ein trying to remember his past or Ryu's role in doing so. In Ryu's Story Mode, he knocks Ein out of the tournament, causing him to regain some of his memories including who Ryu is, and he eventually regains the rest of his memories after battling Kasumi at Ryu's request.

Yakuza 5
1
A common theory is that the character Hanawa, Kiryu’s handler from Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name, is actually Yu Morinaga from Yakuza 5. This is because Spoiler:Morinaga was killed off-screen and his body was never shown, the character has the same voice actor as Hanawa, and he calls Kiryu "Taichi Suzuki", which is the codename he goes by in Yakuza 5.
Far Cry 2

Attachment In King Nnyere's office in his Fort in Lebao-Sako, there is a side table with assorted bottles of liquor, including a unique bottle that can only be found in the Fort. It is a bottle of Extra Special, 43% volume Old French Whisky bottled in Quebec and aged for 30 years, and its label features the face of its brand name "Thomas Gillet: Polack Connection". Gillet was a texture artist at Ubisoft Quebec at the time, but he is not known to have worked on Far Cry 2. The bottle of French whiskey being produced in Quebec is a nod to Ubisoft Quebec, while the name "Polack Connection" seems to both be a nod to the 1971 film "The French Connection" and possibly Gillet's heritage. It's unknown if or how the remaining bottling details relate to Gillet.

Attachment Maria has an unused punk counterpart texture left in Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams game's files. Its purpose remains unknown, though it possibly could have been meant for a co-op multiplayer mode or a scrapped cutscene.
Kingdom Hearts
subdirectory_arrow_right Kingdom Hearts (Franchise)
1
In each Dive to the Heart segment in almost every game in the series, there is a disembodied voice that can only speak through text that guides the characters (and thus the player as well) through the tutorial of each game. The identity of these voices has been unidentified in every game but Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep (where it is obviously child Sora) and the first Kingdom Hearts. For the latter, in the Kingdom Hearts Ultimania, Nomura was asked who the voice is for the opening of the first game and he finally gave it's identity as being none other than King Mickey. However, this interview was done in the early 2000's before most of the sequels were produced, so it's unknown if this explanation was retconned or not.
Kurohyou 2: Ryuu ga Gotoku Ashura-hen
1
Kurohyou 2 features a song which Ukyo can sing in the karaoke mini-game titled "Majima no MajiROCK", which features the voice of Goro Majima and his character profile on the song cover. Goro Majima is a character from the first Yakuza game who has appeared in every single mainline title since, but never made an appearance in either of the Kurohyou spin-offs besides this cameo, implying that he had to have recorded this song himself at some point.

Star Fox 2
1
Attachment Masanao Arimoto, who took over Takaya Imamura's role as the character and sprite artist for Star Fox 2 from the first game, seemed to have cycled through a wide variety of new character pilots designs to represent the two Light class Arwing models, before finally settling on Fay (a spaniel) and Miyu (a Lynx). These beta designs were discovered in the Nintendo Gigaleak of 2020.

Some of these include a sheep, a bear, a deer, a hippo, and even Fara Phoenix (dubbed internally as "lady") from the 1993 Star Fox Nintendo Power comics. The sheep design would actually appear in an issue of Super Game Power magazine that had a feature on Star Fox 2 (before it was cancelled) along with Miyu, making it clear that it was an early design for what would become Fay.

What's also notable and curious is that there seem to be unused female human pilots found within the Gigaleak. It is speculated that Arimoto drew these up as generic templates to base the new female characters' designs off of, rather than introduce human characters into the Star Fox series specifically like what has been theorized since the Gigaleak. The fact that there are multiple different variants of the same non-descript woman with none of them being a different gender compared to the vastly more distinctive anthro designs that Arimoto brainstormed adds credence to this theory.

Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl
1
Attachment In 2023, a set of extremely early Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl screenshots were shared through Discord by a developer, showing an aesthetic closer to Slap City and early versions of SpongeBob, Oblina, Leonardo, The Dump, Jellyfish Fields, and - most notably - Rooftop Rumble, based on Shredder's lair from the 2012 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles show instead of the 80s TMNT (despite the 80s turtles having already been decided on this point). Also among the images was Hardcore Chores, Rocko's DLC stage, suggesting that a Rocko's Modern Life character may have been intended for base game.
