Moonmist is believed to be the first video game to include a lesbian character in the form of Vivien Pentreath, a criminal artist who is stated to be jealous of her girlfriend marrying a man. It should be noted, however, that she is never actually referred to as a lesbian in-game.

Fallout 2
Fallout 2 is notable for being the first video game to feature same-sex marriage through opportunities to marry Miria or Davin, a sister and brother working at the slaughterhouse in Modoc, in a shotgun wedding regardless of the Chosen One's gender or party limit. This marriage is permanent unless Miria/Davin dies in some way, is sold to slavery, or is divorced at New Reno's Drunk Cupid Chapel in exchange for a bottle of alcohol.

According to game designer Chris Avellone in 2019, nobody at Black Isle Studios working on the game was against the inclusion of same-sex marriage, and noted that "fans didn't seem to care" about it when playing the game. He believed the reason for this reception was because of it only being offered in Modoc, a tight-knit small town "where things can get wild and weird" that was more receptive to it than a more "modern" location like Vault City.

Mother 3
In an interview with Nintendo Dream conducted roughly three months after the release of Mother 3, director and series creator Shigesato Itoi stated that the Magypsies were designed as a deliberate contrast with the game's otherwise "macho" setting. Rather than responding to violence with violence, they intervene through peaceful means and live fully aware of and comfortable with the inevitability of death.

In the same interview, Itoi also stated that he made representation a big part of the game's cast: the Magypsies were inspired by friends of his (though he did not specify if this referred to their philosophies or their depiction as nonbinary figures who take after drag culture), and Duster was given a limp "because there are handicapped people in our world." According to Itoi, the idea behind this was to encourage an anti-discrimination message.

Sonic X Shadow Generations
Sonic X Shadow Generations' title was leaked a day prior to its reveal by notable leakers and a URL registration. Following the leaks, some fans and gaming news websites jokingly noted that the term "Sonic X Shadow" had previously also been used on the internet since the 2000s to refer to fan art, fan-fiction and slash fiction depicting the hedgehogs as a romantic couple.
Mortal Kombat X
On the day of the game's release, the character Kung Jin was confirmed by writer Dominic Cianciolo to be the first homosexual character in the Mortal Kombat series. This was notably hinted at during a conversation with Raiden in Story mode:

Raiden: "Go to the Wu Shi Academy. Join the Shaolin, like Kung Lao before you."
Kung Jin: "I can't. They won't... accept-"
Raiden: "They care only about what is in your heart. Not whom your heart desires."

When Tanya was added as a DLC character, one of her prefight interactions with Jin also references his lack of interest in the opposite sex:

Tanya: "Quite a handsome Shaolin."
Kung Jin: "Barkin' up the wrong tree, sister."

Scratchin' Melodii
Attachment Melodii from Scratchin' Melodii is referred to with "they" pronouns throughout the game, and a gag in the Grase Poppin' stage shows them exiting a restroom with a quaver as a symbol. The game's creator LephemStar91 noted that, unlike characters such as Frisk from Undertale or Niko from OneShot, Melodii's gender is not up to the player's interpretation or a mystery, but rather explicitly non-binary:

"Apparently Melodii's gender/lack-thereof has been a bit of a topic again. So just to publicly squash any and all misconceptions, Melodii is non-binary. It's not meant to be an "up to interpretation" sort of thing, Melodii's a character with their own identity."
Sonic the Hedgehog
The lyrics to Silver's theme, "Dreams of an Absolution", was based on songwriter Bentley Jones' relationship with his ex-boyfriend:

"Originally, I wrote "Dreams" about a bad ex-boyfriend who wanted to get back with me, and I couldn't shake off the past, and I was in this weird grey area that I didn't know if I wanted to move forward together anymore. Scandal! "Dreams" was written about a gay love story!"
Friday Night Funkin'
subdirectory_arrow_right Pico's School (Game)
A popular belief within the Friday Night Funkin' fandom is that the game's main protagonist Boyfriend used to be in a relationship with Pico, the main protagonist of Pico's School and the opponent of Week 3. This gained so much traction that Tom Fulp (the creator of Pico's School) jokingly said it was "official Pico 2 canon". Programmer NinjaMuffin99 initially claimed this was just a joke, but later changed his mind and confirmed it was canon. The cutscene for the song "Stress" alludes to this, as Tankman mockingly refers to Pico as Boyfriend's "sexually ambiguous, angry little friend."

On April 1st, 2021, Tom Fulp updated Pico's School as an April Fools Day joke, with this version ending with Pico revealing to Cassandra that he and Boyfriend are dating and that everybody in the school accepts them. The next day, this version would be released as a separate game called Pico's School: Love Conquers All, being set in an alternate timeline. Given that the game portrayed Pico and Boyfriend's relationship in a positive light, some fans have taken this as a sign that Tom Fulp approves of the idea that they were at one point a couple.

Virtual Lab
Attachment In an interview with the Bad Game Hall of Fame, Megumi Ayase, who programmed Virtual Lab singlehandedly, stated that the large-breasted woman who appears next to the playing field was based on the idealized image that she wanted to attain as a transgender woman. This is reflected in her name, Megu, a truncation of Ayase's given name. Ayase also stated that the decision to make Megu 13 years old was done without her consultation, and that she didn't find out about this until she read the game's manual, much to her surprise.
In 2023, Activision Blizzard was ordered to pay $35 million by the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) over its failures to maintain proper workplace disclosure controls and violations of whistleblower protections. The fine was imposed due to the company’s failure to ensure proper employee protections against workplace harassment and gender discrimination, which led to many women leaving the company. The SEC used a 2021 lawsuit by the state of California’s Civil Rights Department against Activision Blizzard to launch its own investigation meant to determine whether the firm’s handling of the situation constituted a breach of its fiduciary duty to investors. The proceedings were started after the company’s home state charged it with violations of the California Fair Employment and Housing Act in summer 2021.
Andy's Apple Farm
In a tweet meant to celebrate Trans Day of Visibility, the game's developer M36games revealed through a series of emojis that the characters Margret the Mole and Pierre the Pineapple are transgender, with the latter's scars seemingly being surgery scars. The following year, in a separate tweet by NecromancerTwink, the co-creator of Bauhaus the Bat, he decided to also make this character transgender after discovering a possible error in the character's article on the game's Fandom wiki.

Freshly-Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland
subdirectory_arrow_right Ripened Tingle's Balloon Trip of Love (Game), The Legend of Zelda (Franchise), Tingle (Collection)
Tingle's effeminate mannerisms have caused many fans to assume the character is supposed to be gay, and so much so that in 2006, GayGamer named Tingle as gaming's #1 "gayest character". The Legend of Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma would say to Kotaku in 2015: "He's not gay. He's just an odd person." The Tingle spin-off games very overtly portray Tingle as a heterosexual man, with Ripened Tingle's Balloon Trip of Love being a combination of a dating simulator and point-and-click adventure where every date is female, while in Freshly-Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland, part of Tingle's motivation is that he wants to be with beautiful women.

There are two instances in the history of Archie's Sonic the Hedgehog comics where writers had attempted to write a same-sex relationship for characters originally created for the 1993 animated series that the comic was based on.

On October 30, 2009, former writer Ken Penders revealed that he had intended for the character Rotor the Walrus to be gay, stating:

"I thought it was fairly obvious Rotor was gay, and begun laying the groundwork for that storyline during the MOBIUS: 25 YEARS LATER segments. I even showed his life partner without saying as such and planted clues between the lines."

It would later be stated that Rotor's "life partner" was Cobar, an Echidna scientist who only ever appeared during the MOBIUS: 25 YEARS LATER storyline. According to technical advisor Robert Repas (speaking on behalf of Penders), Sega feared backlash over the relationship, and thus ordered him to keep the relationship low-key, only allowing subtle hints, though Penders later clarified that it was likely then-editor Justin Freddy Gabrie that he had spoken with and not Sega. At the same time, this relationship has been critcized by fans for its lack of subtextual evidence, which was not helped by Penders only revealing it years after the fact. According to later writer Ian Flynn as part of a Q&A wrap-up, Rotor and Cobar's relationship is considered a piece of behind-the-scenes trivia and is not canon to the current Sonic timeline as, according to him, there had been no canonical build-up to Rotor's sexual preference regardless of intention.

However, Flynn would be involved in the second instance of trying to write in a same-sex relationship. In the first episode of the BumbleKast from October 5, 2015, he stated:

"I would dare say that if you go through the book since the reboot, you could probably make a case for [Sally Acorn and Nicole the Holo-Lynx being in a romantic relationship]."

Shortly after the comic's cancellation, Flynn would confirm that he and his wife/fellow writer Aleah Baker had written subtle details hinting at this romance into the comic. He initially described these details as "blatant", but retracted it for "subtle", implying that there were some internal/editorial considerations at play for how far they could go with the hints. During the same BumbleKast episode, he also revealed that part of the reason why Sally and Nicole's relationship was made subtle was due to potential backlash from the Sonic fandom, as Sally had been commonly depicted as Sonic's girlfriend and love interest up to that point. One of Sega's mandates for the comic near the end of its run was that game characters like Sonic were not allowed to enter serious relationships, meaning Sonic would not be allowed to commit to Sally in the comic's reboot.

Upon release, many streamers criticized the game for giving the option for the player to choose their pronouns in the creation menu. Similarly, a player on Twitter criticized the game for allowing a male NPC, Sam Coe, to flirt with a male player character. In response, Elias Toufexis, the voice actor for Coe, clarified that the character was played as bisexual.
