Despite incorporating several elements common in a live-service game (i.e. an in-game store, a battle pass, seasonal events, and premium currency), Skull and Bones was given a price tag of $70. Yves Guillemot, the CEO of Ubisoft, justified this during an investors call before the game's release, stating:
It's worth noting, however, that the game cost $200 million due to its decade-long development, with Ubisoft admitting that they did not think they would be able to break even due to its poor launch. Knowing this, it can be inferred that Ubisoft insisted on referring to Skull and Bones as a "quadruple-A" title not because of the scope of the project, but for how abnormally long it took to produce and raised the price to recoup costs, because this was not the first or only game they called a AAAA title in the past. It was discovered as far back as 2020 on the LinkedIn pages of several Ubisoft employees that they referred to Skull and Bones, the also long-delayed Beyond Good & Evil 2, and later Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, all games with development times lasting at least six years, as AAAA titles in their work experience.
"It's a very big game and we feel that people will really see how vast and complete that game is. So it's a really full triple-A, quadruple-A game that will deliver in the long run."

Additionally, the note itself appears to be a reference to "This Man", an urban legend created by Italian sociologist Andrea Natella about a mysterious individual who has appeared in the dreams of people all over the world since 2006.

After Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door's announcement in 2003, some Mario fans incorrectly believed that the character of Madame Flurrie was going to be the ghost of Bowser's wife, based off of her character design and Japanese name. This is due to Flurrie's Japanese name, "Cloudia", sounding a lot like "Clawdia", a popular urban legend name for the Koopalings' mother supposedly created by the Mario fan website "Lemmy's Land", as well as Flurrie sharing a hair style with Ludwig and lip-shape with Wendy, who were at the time considered Bowser's children by Nintendo.

The now defunct Jurassic Park Institute website featured what appeared to be an unused 3D model of a Chasmosaurus for Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis. This would line up with the developer's comments about wanting to include more dinosaur species outside of the 25 present in the final game, although curiously, this species is not mentioned within the game's "Constant.ini" file, which mentions dozens of other unused dinosaur species.

Robbie Shapiro from Victorious was first depicted as having an interest in performance magic in Victorious: Taking the Lead for Wii. This would eventually be canonized in the TV series with Robbie mentioning an interest in magic, followed by clips released for TheSlap.com of Robbie performing magic tricks.

In 2005, IGN released an April Fools' Day article suggesting that Gyromite would be getting a release for Game Boy Advance in the Classic NES Series line of games, presenting it as having been leaked by a pennysaver newspaper with an image of the supposed "mini-ROB" that would be included. The article could be rather convincing to someone unfamiliar with ROB up until the final sentence, which contains a joke comment from a Nintendo representative forgetting about the existence of Stack-Up. However, if one is intimately familiar with ROB and the Classic NES Series, there are a few red flags that could expose the article's joke nature even if one weren't to check the publication date, particularly that the miniature ROB isn't facing towards the screen of the GBA, while the original NES ROB used a light sensor in its eyes pointed at the screen; the box art has the "Robot Series" logo at the bottom, despite no other Classic NES Series releases of black box titles keeping the series logos; ROB using Stack-Up blocks instead of Gyromite gyros; and the box art provided not being a different shape from an average GBA game to account for the bundled ROB.
The article also had a link to a colour version of the box art included, but that has since been taken offline and is most likely lost.

Donkey Kong's sprite on 75M in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U has a tan skin tone, which is different from DK's paler sprite in either the NES or arcade versions of Donkey Kong. This appears to be the result of Nintendo using an image of the game's arcade version originating from a Japanese retro gaming fan site called Muu-World as reference material, as that image seems to have a color error that makes DK appear tan. The English-language fan wiki Super Mario Wiki has been hosting a different Donkey Kong screenshot with the same error on its page for the game since 2005, and the source of the error as well as several of the images featuring it (including the Mario Wiki screenshot) is currently unknown. It also gives DK a coincidental resemblance to the appearance on the box art for NES Donkey Kong and in-game in Atarisoft's Commodore 64 Donkey Kong. This was fixed for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

The Game Boy Advance version of Final Fantasy IV contains the line “I’ll bet you and your goons wrecked them up something awful.” This is a reference to the Something Awful forums, a popular site in the 2000s, whose members are collectively referred to as goons.

On July 17, 2023, Neopets was purchased from NetDragon through a management buyout deal by Dominic Law, the Neopets Chief Metaverse Officer and former Director of New Markets at both NetDragon and Cherrypicks. This lead to the formation of "World of Neopia, Inc.", a company comprised of team members from both Neopets and Neopets Metaverse, with Law serving as CEO. As part of this, it was announced that Neopets had received $4 million in investment money in early 2023, with additional funding from the management buyout equipping World of Neopia, Inc. to make "meaningful changes in pursuit of a Neopian renaissance." These changes include revamping the homepage and creating the 2024 mobile game "World of Neopets".

The Elf Bowling series has been the subject of multiple bizarre and unprofessional Wikipedia edits by individuals involved with the franchise, something considered poor conduct on the website.
Elf Bowling co-creator Dan "Ferg" Ferguson created a Wikipedia article under the name "Itzaferg" and inserted self-aggrandizing information about his history with the franchise to its page, as well as adding articles that were soon deleted for his company Blockdot and its lesser known, non-Elf Bowling works.
After this, Matthew Lichtenwalter, who bought the rights to Elf Bowling in 2001, attempted to claim that the portable compilation, Elf Bowling 1 & 2 was "unauthorized" using Wikipedia as a platform, writing a signed quote from himself on the Wikipedia article for Elf Bowling, as well as saying that he "created the series [after]" he bought it out.
It seems highly unlikely that the Elf Bowling ports were actually unauthorized, as no legal action was taken, nor did any of the developers or publishers of the release attempt to hide their work on it at any point.

In 2018, rapper Soulja Boy attempted to sell his own line of video game consoles, collectively called the SouljaGame line, sold for $149.99 for a console and $99.99 for a handheld. Advertising claimed that the consoles would be compatible with a variety of consoles' games, including modern platforms like the PlayStation Vita, Nintendo 3DS, and Nintendo Switch. These, quite obviously, did not have such compatibility, but rather were a generic retro emulator console one could find on small business-oriented retail websites such as Wish and AliExpress loaded with pirated and modified games from the Neo Geo; NES; Game Boy Advance; Game Boy Color; Game Boy; Sega Genesis; SNES; Master System; Game Gear; and PlayStation libraries sold at a markup. The only difference from these pre-existing consoles being a photograph of Soulja printed onto the box. Soulja Boy would eventually stop selling SouljaGame consoles, with the website for the console redirecting to Nintendo's 3DS website.

Upon the release of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, many Wario fans were disappointed and shocked to see that his moveset had a powerful farting attack, something that seemed unprecedented for the character to fans in the US. In Japan, Wario's association with toilet humor in promotional material dates back to Wario Land II at least. The marketing for Wario Land 4 is arguably when the gross-out humor could be considered most prominent, with the game having golden poop stickers included in its manual, and the official Japanese website going into immense detail on the size and shape of Wario's fecal matter:"Hey! Stop it with the dirty jokes! Is something I should say!! However…since it’s a good question I’m going to answer it! Last night, I put down 10 plates of liver sauteed with leek, 10 crapes, 10 plates of rice curry. My morning poop was very yellow, it was a good color and a big one too! It almost touched the seat of the toilet! I know! The smell is a mix of tsukemono [pickled vegetables], raw eggs, carassius sushi. Try smelling it!"
Up until Brawl's release, Wario had not been associated with vulgar humor that much within actual games, and the only glimpses US audiences would've received of Wario's slobbish side in marketing would have been in animated commercials where he was animated to have saliva dripping out of his mouth (something that could be easily disregarded given that Nintendo used gross-out gags to market most of their titles in the US at the time, even for less edgy characters such as Kirby and Yoshi) and - by an extreme stretch - a subplot in WarioWare: Touched! revolving around Wario's bad oral hygiene. Following Brawl, farting would be cemented as one of Wario's signature abilities in a variety of Mario games.

During the prerelease of Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2, a set of placeholder pages were found on the game's website relating to different characters. Most notable of these pages was one for Helga, a character who was in the first Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl and hadn't been seen in All-Star Brawl 2 marketing materials or leaks at that point - this led a lot of fans to believe that Helga would be returning. Ultimately, she would only be a background cameo on the Aquarium stage.

When completing Arcade Mode as Bridget, one possible ending depicts her coming out as a transgender girl, having previously been depicted in earlier games as a cisgender boy who was raised as a girl. This plot development attracted rumors that it was a "bad ending" exclusive to the English localization and that Bridget was still a crossdressing boy in the Japanese release. Eventually, director Akira Katano and developer Daisuke Ishiwatari confirmed on their "Developer's Backyard" blog that Bridget was indeed intended to be a trans girl in the Japanese version and that the game's endings were not written under the pretense of them being "good" or "bad," stating that they simply showcase different, coexisting aspects of each character, indicating that Bridget's trans identity is in place across both of her Arcade Mode endings.

In Jade's bedroom, a nearby radio presents announcements including one that promotes a Hillyan News website. To help promote the game around its release in 2003, Ubisoft launched an official Hillyan News website full of short articles and blurbs pertaining to the planet of Hillys and the in-game universe, presumably published weekly between October 2 and December 1, 2003. The website is no longer hosted by Ubisoft, but can be found on the Internet Archive.

There were initially plans for an Xbox version of the game to be released; however, it ended up being cancelled for unknown reasons. A relic of this is present on the game's IGN page, which still includes the Xbox on the list of platforms as of March 2024.
