Typically, the tutorial for Vs. Mode in PaRappa the Rapper 2 will play the Awful version of whichever stage has been selected in the background, the Bad version for the Boxy Boy tutorial, and then the Good version for the actual gameplay. The exception to this is Always Love, which has completely different songs used in Vs. Mode instead of its actual Bad and Awful songs, it is unknown why the Vs. Mode Bad and Awful versions are different, with possible theories being the Vs. Mode remixes being scrapped but left in Vs. Mode, or Always Love's actual Bad and Awful remixes being considered unsuited for the Vs. Mode due to being versions of the same song with less instruments instead of a completely different song like on all other stages, leading to the creation of new songs. This mysterious track is also used on the map screen when Always Love is highlighted.

The antagonist of the original Yakuza was voiced by Kazuhiro Nakaya, who later went on to voice Ichiban Kasuga, the protagonist of Yakuza: Like A Dragon. The two characters also have the same koi tattoo, leading fans to speculate on the parallels between both characters, but aside from their voice actors and tattoos, there are only surface-level parallels.

According to Raww Le Klueze, global admin of the Suikosource forums, there are three unused sprites found in the PC version that appear to be part of an unused Blue Gate summon or something similar. The three sprites are supposed to appear in different spots on the screen which would explain why they are looking in different directions.To support that idea, in the Gensou Suikoden II 108 Stars Character Guide (published only in Japan by Konami), within a section detailing a scrapped idea to summon spirits of other elements, there are a few characters resembling the three unused sprites if they were mixed together.

Dataminers on the Suikosource forums discovered an unused dungeon in the game that cannot be accessed other than through hacking. The dungeon is incomplete with some missing features, but is largely playable. While there is no direct confirmation from developers on how it was intended to tie in with the game's narrative, dataminers have concluded the following:At some point after defeating the Beast Rune, the player is supposed to return to the village of Sajah. There is an inconspicuous-looking rock that does nothing, but which can be removed via hacking to reveal an entrance. While this entrance does not work, it is theorized that once entering this passage, the player would reach the lowest floor of the test dungeon. From there they would travel upward and face six or more bosses (speculated to be Bone Dragon, Stone Golem, Abomination, Double Head, Pest Rat and Harpy - though not necessarily in that order) gatekeeping certain stairs. Monsters would get progressively harder at each stage. There are around six floors and 8 orbs which the player would need to collect to pass through the final door.
In the final room, there is a purple rune that offers 3 choices; When the dialogue is translated into English, it reads:
"One in search of a new path - I shall test your will.
I am the Rune of Circulating Paths. Do you wish for a new path?
- Yes
- No
- New path?
While your strength remains, the new path shall guide you to a new beginning.
Though be warned that there is no return path. Do you still wish for a new path?
- Yes!
- Wait a minute

Looking through all of this dialogue, the first option warps you back to Sajah, leaving you on your way. The second option allows you to step back before deciding again, while the third option warps you to an unknown location.
It is theorized you're supposed to end up in Sindar Ruin as there was a brief moment where Riou was left alone. In the end, you get to replay at that point in time, with previously kept items/stats, and possibly have the combined Rune of Beginning (Sword and Shield Rune) as it has been alluded many times in-game that it was considered as one.
It's speculated the reason why this dungeon was scrapped was because it was too ambitious to be implemented.

Bubbles' original name in Japan was Gloopy, and a defined gender was not given for her. It is very likely that Bubbles was made a female character by Nintendo of America, as her design lacks the common cartoon gender signifiers (such as a pink coloration or eyelashes) that Nintendo's character designers typically used at the time for female characters whose genders weren't intended to be a surprise reveal.

Q*bert was the only video game character to be an answer in Icon Pop Quiz prior to the video game character-themed Weekend Special. Given that he is placed between the Wreck-It Ralph characters, it is possible that the developers of Icon Pop Quiz may not have been familiar with the game and believed it was made up for Ralph. In the castle courtyard in Super Mario 64, there is a plaque to a power star with an illegible name written below, often interpreted as either "Eternal Star" or "L is Real 2401" - with the latter being more popular for how it could be seen as a cryptic hint towards unlocking Luigi. In a poetic coincidence, the source code leak that revealed Luigi's scrapped model would be found 24 years and 1 month after Super Mario 64's release.

Dr. Starline the Platypus from the IDW Sonic the Hedgehog comic series is inspired by a glitch character from Knuckles' Chaotix - a silver, red and charcoal Knuckles recolor, known by fans as "Wechnia", but by the game itself as "**********", seemingly based on unused data for Tails. Starline's color scheme is taken directly from Wechnia, his name is a literal take on the name "**********", (or "star-line") the black streak in his fur resembles the red streaks all over Wechnia's fur, and the choice of a platypus seems to be inspired by how certain Wechnia sprites would make the bottom of his muzzle yellow and loosely resemble shading for the underside of a flat bill, alongside platypi being Australian like echidnas.

Throughout the 2023 "Five Nights at Freddy's" film, the character Spoiler:Steve Raglan gives Mike Schmidt advice over the phone about how to look after Freddy Fazbear's Pizza for the night shift, essentially making him the Phone Guy. It's revealed late in the film that Spoiler:Steve Raglan was an alias for the murderer William Afton. His role could be seen as a reference to early theories in the franchise's community where Phone Guy was thought to be the murderer long before Afton was given a name and was only known as the "Purple Guy".

Matthew Patrick (or "MatPat"), a YouTuber known for making a multitude of Five Nights at Freddy's analysis videos throughout the series' history for his series "Game Theory", makes a cameo as a waiter in the 2023 "Five Nights at Freddy's" film. The coffee shop that he works at is named Sparky's (a nod to Sparky the Dog, one of the series' earliest fan-made hoaxes). MatPat's character's name as seen on his name tag is Ness, which, according to series creator Scott Cawthon, is a reference to a 2016 Game Theory video where MatPat theorized that Sans from Undertale was Ness from EarthBound. MatPat's final line in his scene is "but that's just a theory", a portion of his catchphrase used in the majority of his videos.
A pinned comment left by Cawthon on a "Film Theory" video where MatPat goes into further detail on his cameo in the film claimed that the packed theater Cawthon watched the film in "ERUPTED in cheers" when MatPat appeared.

When the silhouette of the Avatar in Sonic Forces was first revealed in a Nintendo Direct, many Sonic fans joked that the silhouette belonged to Bubsy, an infamous Sonic-inspired character from the 1990s. Almost a month after the Avatar was confirmed as the identity of the mystery character, Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back would be officially announced.

Garfield's Scary Scavenger Hunt features a cameo from Lyman, Odie's original owner who disappeared from the Garfield comics in 1983, where he is chained up in the basement of the haunted house. This somewhat lines up with a joke in the 1998 book 20 Years & Still Kicking! Garfield’s Twentieth Anniversary Collection, where a comedic list of reasons for Lyman's disappearance was provided, with "Don't look in Jon's basement!" listed as #1. The difference from the book being that the Scary Scavenger Hunt game does not take place in Jon's house, nor is the haunted house ever said to belong to the Arbuckle family.Lyman also makes a second cameo in the game's sequel Garfield's Scary Scavenger Hunt II: Donuts of Doom, where his severed head can be found inside of an oven.
Lyman would eventually reappear in The Garfield Show where he was said to have left for Australia to find cryptids and protect animals from poachers.

Crash Team Rumble had been teased officially as far back as Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time's release date in 2020 - first in It's About Time! where, after 106% completing the game, the player could return to the start of the game and spin Crash's TV multiple times to show a mysterious Wumpa Fruit symbol. This would shortly be followed by a cross promotional video for Uncharted, where the symbol could be seen again on a banner with the words "Wumpa League". Later in 2021, a Game Designers Conference talk with Toys for Bob studio head Paul Yan would show two hints towards the game's existence: one on a graphic made to show the game's goals with a set of green "this game is..." post-it notes (such as "new vehicles" or "cartoony animation" and red "this game isn't..." post-it notes (such as "beat 'em up" and "open world") with Wumpa League put in the middle as a yellow "might be", obscured by another note; and a second where the screen very briefly flashes to concept art of "Wumpa League". Crash content creators and game journalists would soon receive Wumpa Fruit-shaped pinatas with the Wumpa League branding and colors, which was then followed by a set of meme tweets on the Crash Twitter account relating to Wumpa Fruit, one of which being a play on the It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia Pepe Silvia conspiracy board meme. Toys for Bob would later release a Crash anniversary celebration video showing the Wumpa League logo again along with a Gem variant. The Wumpa League logos would show once more in the background of a PlayStation crossover commercial. The final tease of 2021 would be in a Christmas package sent to the press which had the Gem sticker placed on the side of the box.
In 2022, the hints started rolling in again on St. Patrick's Day, when Toys for Bob posted a piece of concept art for Crash 4 edited to have four-leaf clovers littered throughout, asking players to find the seasonal hidden objects. However, the Wumpa League symbol was hidden alongside the clovers. Later, the press and Crash fandom would recieve another package, this time an Aku-Aku-branded pizza box promoting Crash 4's release on Steam, with "HUNGRY FOR MORE? TRY OUR NEW WUMPA PIZZA FOR $12.08!" written on the side - the price translating into the date of August 12, which was the date of the Game Awards, which is ultimately where Crash Team Rumble would be revealed.

The section for passwords in the manual for Wario Blast shows an image of the game's title screen with a debug code (2264) that lets the player start the game with all power-ups as Wario. It is unknown if this was an oversight, or intentionally included.

Video game researcher Patrick Kellogg posited that Cube Quest was likely the inspiration for Polybius, an urban legend in which US government operatives create a Tempest-esque shoot-em-up of the same name that has lasting psychoactive effects on those who play it. In Kellogg's analysis, he notes that Cube Quest features similar Tempest-style gameplay and sports vibrant, surreal backgrounds like the kind described in the urban legend. The backgrounds in Cube Quest were reproduced by running a LaserDisc player installed in the game's cabinet; because LaserDisc technology is much less reliable than solid state media, the cabinet required constant maintenance from technicians, which Kellogg cited as the likely inspiration for the government agents who periodically harvest data from Polybius in the urban legend.
