Baldur's Gate 3
5
Baldur's Gate 3 was originally revealed with a CGI trailer at a conference for the Google Stadia cloud gaming service in June 2019 as part of an Early Access exclusivity deal that would ultimately be cancelled when Stadia was shut down in 2023. The game's director Swen Vincke touted the service at the time for its purported accessibility, and the potential for in-game community feedback to directly affect the game's development and playthroughs via Stadia's Crowd Choice feature. However, Vincke later expressed regret over having the game be revealed this way, calling it "a really stupid deal" due to the challenges of releasing an Early Access build to a second platform, but that "it allowed me to pay for the CGI."

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
3
Attachment Among files uncovered in the Gigaleak, a large-scale leak of assets from Nintendo's internal servers in 2020, are various assets from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island depicting alternate ideas for Baby Mario. The earliest of these assets are a series of sprites from October 1993 depicting him in a bonnet and with a mustache similar to his adult counterpart; by comparison, the earliest sprites depicting his final design are dated to August 1994.

In the interim, however, Nintendo apparently considered omitting Baby Mario entirely; sprites dating to the spring of 1994 show that the developers considered having the Yoshi Clan ferry an infant wizard around instead. These sprites depict the wizard both in normal gameplay and in the pre-rendered CGI graphics used in the opening cutscene. Other sprites of the wizard show that they would've provided an in-universe reason for Yoshi's ability to transform into various vehicles: the wizard would cast a spell on a Yoshi egg while encasing themself and the real Yoshi in a bubble.

While the developers ultimately went back to using Baby Mario, the wizard still appears in a prototype build from December 6, 1994. In this iteration, the wizard is a form that Baby Mario can turn into through the use of an item depicting the projectiles fired by Kamek in the penultimate area of "6-8: King Bowser's Castle". This "Wizard Mario" form could similarly cast spells that transform certain enemies into objects such as eggs, watermelons, and Winged Clouds.

Attachment In a pre-release gameplay video from 2018, at the end of a tour of the Home Base, a lit sign featuring the logo for the pizza restaurant chain Domino's can be seen hanging on a wall near the refrigerator. This sign would be removed in the final game, but within the game's files are several voice lines spoken by the game's main cast (Coco, Davis, Eva, Io, Jack, Louis, Mia, Rin and Yakumo) talking about eating freshly delivered pizza in an unusually glorifying manner without mentioning the company by name. It's unclear how these voice clips would have been used in the game, but when taken with the unused Domino's sign, it's believed that this was all part of a planned promotional tie-in that fell through when the game was delayed to 2019, where Domino's would have somehow survived the apocalypse in the game's story and adapted to the Revenants and the Lost.

Attachment Wuhu Island was originally created for Wii Sports before its debut appearance in Wii Fit. An early version of the island can be seen in a leaked development image for Wii Sports, and in footage of the unused Airplane sport in the E3 2006 demo for the game. The leaked image also indicates that the Airplane sport would have also given you the option to fly around the island with a Rocket Belt, an idea that would later be reused in Pilotwings Resort.

Silent Hill: The Short Message
2
Throughout 2022, there were several leaks in regards to the existence of Silent Hill: The Short Message. First, screenshots were leaked of a playable teaser for the game, where it was known under the working title "Silent Hill: Sakura". Then, in both September and December of that year, the game received age ratings in both South Korea and Taiwan, respectively. Additionally, when Konami began hiring for upcoming projects based on Silent Hill, one of the projects was an unannounced in-house game, which would later turn out to be Silent Hill: The Short Message.

Attachment The life bar icons for the SnowHorn and HighTop in Star Fox Adventures sport different, more cartoony designs from their respective in-game models. The reason for this is because they're clearly based upon their original N64 Dinosaur Planet models, which too are much more cartoonier than the final SFA models that go for a more semi-realistic look.

Foodfight!
subdirectory_arrow_right Foodfight! (Game)
2
Attachment A game based on the critically reviled, but at the time still in production, animated film "Foodfight!" got far enough into development that it received a playable demo at Take Two Interactive's booth at E3 2006. According to the marquee above the demo booth, it was scheduled to be released in Spring 2007 to coincide with the film's planned release at the time. Due to numerous production issues and distribution setbacks, the film would not see a release until 2012, but the game would never be seen again. The only known evidence of its existence is a short 8-second piece of B-roll footage captured on the E3 show floor, and saved by the now-defunct Quake fan website PlanetQuake4.net.

The game was initially developed by Midway Games West in 2001, when the film was in an earlier iteration, but aside from some released concept art, this version of the game was abandoned. The game shown at E3 2006 would have been a 3D platformer starring Dex Dogtective, and possibly would have featured voice work from at least some of the film's cast including Charlie Sheen (the voice of Dex), Eva Longoria, Hillary Duff and Wayne Brady. At this stage, it was expected to be published by Global Star Software (which would later be absorbed into 2K Games in late 2007) and released for the Game Boy Advance, Nintendo GameCube, and PlayStation 2. It's not known who would have developed it. While the marquee showcases the logo for the development company Vicious Cycle, reported correspondence with a developer from the company claimed Vicious Cycle never had any involvement with the game.

Foodfight!
1
Attachment Concept art for the 2001 build of the cancelled Foodfight! game developed by Midway Games West was released on artist Jason Leong's website, showing a set of character concepts and game scenarios with various fictional and real-life product mascots. The character concepts shown include:

• The red, yellow, and blue M&M's carrying vitamin supplement boxes with muscular hammer-wielding arms coming out of them.
• The Keebler Elves firing bows and arrows with flaming Tootsie Pops.
• A team-up of the Green Giant, a muscular version of Poppin' Fresh the Pillsbury Doughboy, and a jacket-wearing Kool-Aid Man.
• Mr. Clean commanding an army of Scrubbing Bubbles.
• Cap'n Crunch shooting a bazooka made out of a Pringles can.
• Hawaiian Punch's mascot Punchy punching a soup can made by Brand X, a fictional brand from the movie.

The game scenarios seem to feature various mini-games among main game missions, including:

• An early human version of Dex Dogtective swinging with a grappling hook, finding shortcuts between products, being launched from Hamburger Helper's mascot Lefty in platforming sections.
• What appears to be a mini-game where Dex and a Brand X mascot would bump into one another on shopping trolleys.
• A mission where fictional mascot Daredevil Dan flies above the supermarket in his plane.
• The Green Giant rolling over tiny Brand X bots with either a barrel or a mango bowling ball. This mini-game has two pieces of concept art, one that presents it as akin to the game Tempest and another that shows the Green Giant stepping on robots.
• Dex commanding the M&M's in a shooting mini-game.
• A platforming mini-game with Cap'n Crunch jumping off of barrels.
• A mini-game where fictional mascot Polar Penguin must destroy pillars on the ice.
• A cow-herding mini-game featuring Twinkie the Kid.
• A food-fighting mini-game, like the climax of the movie, specifically themed around Chef Boyardee.
• A mini-game where Dex throws Lucky Charms at Brand X drones.

Of the licensed characters featured in this concept art, only Mr. Clean, Punchy, Chef Boyardee, and Twinkie the Kid would appear in the film when it eventually released in 2012.

Attachment Early builds of Pokémon Gold and Silver indicate that Celebi was originally designed after Kokopelli, a trickster figure, mythical flautist, and fertility deity worshiped by certain indigenous tribes in the American southwest (most prominently the Hopi and Anasazi). This is most apparent in a leaked build from May 6, 1998, in which Celebi's sprite is nearly identical to modern depictions of Kokopelli, with the only major deviation being the addition of eyes. A later design is present in the data for the Spaceworld 1999 demo, bearing a closer resemblance to Celebi's finalized sprite but retaining the Kokopelli motif.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2

Within the 2023 Insomniac Games ransomware leak, a PC developer build of the game was found to include several unused Symbiote bosses, including Riot, Lasher, Agony, and Phage. These characters were intended to appear as a team alongside the main antagonist, Venom. However, during development, the game’s story likely underwent changes and the focus shifted to other characters, such as Kraven and Venom. As a result, the Symbiotes besides Venom, Scream, and Anti-Venom were abandoned.

Epic Mickey
1
Attachment In 2021, a 15-second clip of early animation tests for the game dating back to 2006-2007 was discovered on the website of animator Michael Daubert, who worked on animations for an early iteration of the game, but went uncredited in the final release as everything in the test footage was scrapped. These tests showcase a completely different art style from the final game and unused gameplay elements, with Mickey shooting ink out of his body to quickly surf around, and jumping and slamming the ground to summon a tidal wave of ink to attack large Blotling enemies. This tidal wave attack also causes Mickey to lose all of his colors, turn white and become exhausted, suggesting that the known early idea of ink/paint/thinner usage changing his physical appearance was going to involve a stamina meter tied to his attacks. Mickey's early design was more stylized compared to his traditional appearance in the final game, featuring a prominently tall forehead, a lanky, stretched body, no visible mouth, and crooked oval ears. This early design would live on through an emblem used in promotional materials and as a recurring icon throughout the final game, with the inky black outline of the early design's head forming an "M".

Star Fox 64
1
Attachment Planet Zoness was originally a beautiful water planet similar to its twin planet, Aquas. It was famous for its resorts and was where Peppy Hare had taken his wife, Vivian, for their honeymoon. However, Andross' forces would invade and pollute its waters with their bioweapons, mutating the local wildlife to become larger and violent.

Early footage of Star Fox 64 circa 1996 actually show Zoness in its pure, unpolluted state, which seems to indicate that making it polluted was decided on later in development. There's actually appears to be dialogue remnants of this cleaner version in the developer's dub:

Peppy: Be careful of the wildlife on this planet.

Falco: Huge, these guys!

Slippy: I want to live in a sea like this, ribbit.

When finishing the stage:

Peppy: I didn't know this planet was under Andorf's power too.

Slippy: I will come back when there is peace.

But in the final polluted version, this exchange in the JP version goes:

Peppy: 何て事だ・・・これがあのゾネスか? (What the... is this Zoness?)

Slippy: 泳ぐ気にもならないよ (I don't even feel like swimming.)

Falco: お前 海でも泳ぐのか (Do you swim in the sea, too?)

During the 2006 Game Developers Conference (GDC) where Sony Computer Entertainment showcased a new demo for Resistance, the game previously known as "I-8". The demo showed the game in a much more complete form than the simple FPS that was shown at E3 2005. The gameplay was shown with new weapons very much like the Ratchet & Clank series, only now with a more realistic slant. The demo also showed off effects such as smoke trails on grenades, tactical troop movements, and enemies that came from the ceilings as the lead character ran down a devastated corridor.

The Saturn release's demo, "Silhouette Mirage: Trial Version", normally ends after level two. However, hidden on the game's disc is an early pre-release build of the retail game, dated 1997-07-16, while the final game has a build date of 1997-07-30. The full game is inaccessible without modifying the data.

Attachment A prototype for Color a Dinosaur shows that the game was originally called Paint Me! and used black backgrounds instead of white.
