Doki Doki Literature Club!

Various Easter eggs are hidden in the game's character files, most of which require their extensions to be manually altered:

• If the player changes the extension for Monika's character file to .png, the resulting image depicts a square of white noise inside a ring of fire and cracks. Converting the white noise to binary gives a text message encrypted in Base64. Decrypting it reveals what appears to be a monologue from Monika, who mentions a "Third Eye" that causes "some kind of deja vu," which is how she and the other girls are able to perceive alterations to the game's data.
• If the player changes the extension for Natsuki's character file to .jpeg, the resulting image file depicts a painting of a white-haired girl with blank white eyes. The image is heavily distorted, requiring the player to invert its colors and change its rectangular coordinates to polar ones in an image editor in order to view it properly.
• If the player changes the extension for Sayori's character file to .ogg, the resulting audio will become a discordant shriek, similar to that normally heard when converting a data file to audio. However, running sayori.ogg through a spectrograph reveals a QR code which, when scanned, leads to a fictitious examination report for a character named Libitina; her last name and a procedure administered to her are both redacted with a series of X's. Of note is that like Monika's hidden monologue, the report repeatedly mentions a "third eye."
• If the player opens Yuri's character file in a text editor, the result will be a message encrypted in Base64; the file extension does not need to be modified in order to do this. Decrypting the message reveals that it's "I Found a Box Containing the Story of a 19-Year-Old Girl Who Killed a Random Person for No Reason", a creepypasta that was anonymously posted on Thought Catalog in June 2015, over two years before Doki Doki Literature Club's release. In a Twitter reply, developer Dan Salvato confirmed that he was the creepypasta's author and the one who hid it in the game.

Game & Watch: Super Mario Bros.
1
Attachment One of the Sleep Mode screens, which depicts Mario and Luigi having a picnic in World 4-3, is based on a piece of concept art originally drawn for The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and was included in this Game & Watch over two years before the film's 2023 release. The original image is showcased in one of the bonus features on the film's home media release, "Meet the Cast: Charlie Day as Luigi". Among other differences, the concept art features Mario & Luigi sitting on mushrooms instead of blocks and wearing their modern outfits instead of ones matching their in-game sprites.

Sometimes when items are scanned at American gas stations, the sound effect when Sonic collects rings will play on the cash register. It is not known why this sound effect is used, but it's theorized that it stems from Sega's parent company, Sega Sammy Holdings, having some kind of involvement with Gilbarco Veeder-Root, an American technology company that produces point of sale/payment systems and fuel dispensers. The software used in cash registers produced by the company, Gilbarco Passport, is widely used at convenience stores across the United States and was developed by an unspecified third party, which could be Sega Sammy Holdings. The reason why the Sonic ring sound effect was specifically used is likely a result of the merger between Sega and Sammy Corporation allowing the latter to own the rights to some Sega IPs like Sonic the Hedgehog and primarily use them for pachinko machines.

Tetris
2
Attachment The original release of the 1988 DOS version of Tetris features an animation on the title screen where a white Cessna airplane flies over the title logo; after the opening scroll, it reappears while dragging a banner that reads "PLAY TETRIS!" This sequence references Mathias Rust, a West German teenager who illegally piloted a Cessna from Uetersen Airfield to Moscow the previous year in an attempt to relieve tensions between the United States and Soviet Union, landing near Red Square.

Rust's flight was a major embarrassment for the Soviet military due to him disproving the notion that their defenses were ironclad. Consequently, later revisions of the game removed the animation on orders from ELORG, the Soviet Union's state-sponsored computer company and the owners of the Tetris license at the time.

In Jenny's showcase, her neutral air light attack is referred to as a "lingair". This is a reference to a tweet made by developer Thaddeus Crews prior to her reveal, where he questioned the appropriateness of the "sex kick", a competitive fighting game term originating from the Super Smash Bros. series for an aerial attack that stays out for an elongated period and slowly becomes less powerful, and suggested "lingering air" as a sanitized alternative.

The Poodle Plush collectible item is based on Percy Poodle, the titular antagonist of the Five Nights at Freddy's fangame Playtime with Percy. Rambley alludes to this when presenting the plush to him at the Information Kiosk, noting how it's a "non-Indigo-brand toy", and claiming that it would "make playtime special for a child with poor taste".

Everything

The game's creator David O'Reilly was friends with Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, also known as the "Daniels", the two writers and directors of the 2022 film "Everything Everywhere All at Once". During the climax of the film, protagonist Evelyn Wang and antagonist Jobu Tupaki appear in an alternate universe where they are both rocks overlooking a vista. In an interview with the Daniels, they revealed that this scene had two major influences. One being the children's book "Sylvester and the Magic Pebble" (about a donkey who turns into a rock and is isolated from his family), while the other inspiration was the core concept of O'Reilly's video game Everything, where the player can play as "literally anything". They described it as follows:

Kwan: "Literally, you can be a toenail clipping, you can be a fire hydrant, you can be an antelope, you can be a rock. And there’s maybe a dozen different kind of rocks you can be. Just rolling around —"

Scheinert: "— just feels good."

Kwan: "It feels good and that is really beautiful. The whole purpose of the game is you have to look at it and not press anything. It's a game where the longer you don't press anything —"

Scheinert: "— the more you progress."

Kwan: "He called it a relax-'em-up instead of a shoot-'em-up."

The Lumberjack Lab Assistant enemy from Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back is usually portrayed wearing a red hat and shirt with blue overalls. This design is used for his NPC role in the Dragon Mines stage of Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled, but as a skin for the playable version of the Lab Assistant in that game, his colors are inverted, possibly to downplay potential similarities to Mario.

Deltarune

Attachment In an interview that Toby Fox conducted with the Chapter 2 development team, Taxiderby, one of the game's programmers, stated that the Spamton cherub that appears when pressing F1 during the Spamton and Spoiler:Spamton NEO fights was a spur-of-the-moment suggestion. According to them, Spamton's line "[Press F1 For] HELP" was already written, but it was originally a meaningless non-sequitur. After Fox suggested the idea of giving F1 an actual function in the fight, Taxiderby came up with the Final Fantasy-inspired Easter egg, putting it in singlehandedly after Fox gave his approval for the idea. In the same interview, they stated that they were surprised by its popularity, having made it purely as a throwaway gag.
Deltarune
1
Attachment Although Chapter 1 was given a surprise release in 2018, with Toby Fox giving no prior public indications of its existence, Deltarune had been teased in secret since at least 2015. Three months after Undertale released, the fan site DeltaRune.com announced that it would be rebranding to Dreemurr.com at Fox's request; Fox didn't tell the owners of Dreemurr.com why he didn't want them to use the domain. However, after the fan site fulfilled his request, Fox used deltarune.com to host an image called him.png, a passage of Wingdings text only readable by turning up the brightness using image editing software.

While the text initially parroted the phrase "THIS NEXT (space) EXPERIMENT (space) SEEMS (space) VERY (space) VERY (space) INTERESTING" from the unused room_gaster event in Undertale, by July 1, 2016, the text was edited to read "THREE HEROES APPEARED (space) AT WORLD'S EDGE", later being edited again by August 17 to say "THREE HEROES APPEARED (space) TO BANISH THE ANGELS HEAVEN". Both revisions quote portions of the legend that Ralsei recounts in Chapter 1, indicating that these parts of the game's backstory were already conceived by this point.

Following the release of Chapter 1, deltarune.com would be refurbished as the official website for Deltarune itself. Consequently, earlier versions of the site only survive through snapshots on the Wayback Machine, a URL archiving platform hosted by the Internet Archive.

Monument Valley
1
Attachment At the very beginning of Appendix v. The Lost Falls, after Ida presses the first switch in the level to raise the pillar the Totem is on up to where she is, a set of symbols carved into two sides of the pillar are revealed. These symbols are part of the ancient Zuish language from the game Fez, but they are used incorrectly in order to fit the message on the pillar (i.e. vertical spelling, no use of spaces, line breaks in the middle of words). When translated, it spells out this message:

TOSR
ONDO
GEAU
OINS
ATG
LIE

"TO GO ALONE IT IS DANGEROUS"

This not only acts as a reference to the popular quote at the start of The Legend of Zelda to show Ida receiving help, but also acts as foreshadowing to the end of the level where Spoiler:the Totem is destroyed by a crushing stone pillar while helping Ida get past it, forcing her to go through the rest of the Forgotten Shores levels on her own.

Attachment In 2014, developer Danny Gray revealed while promoting Monument Valley at its release that there was a single Easter egg hidden in the main game. It would eventually be discovered and then confirmed by Gray two years later that this secret was in the green room of the main game's final level X. Observatory, where a green model of an Arwing from the first Star Fox game can be found floating near some debris in the bottom-right corner of the area.

The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog
subdirectory_arrow_right Sonic The Hedgehog (Franchise)

Attachment In The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog, when Sonic is found presumed dead on the ground, the pose he is laying in is a reference to a meme within animation circles known as the "Family Guy Death Pose". This pose is frequently used throughout the animated series of the same name created by Seth MacFarlane, which became criticized in later years for utilizing cheaper animation. This is not the first time this pose was referenced in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise; the first time being in Issue #3 of the IDW comic book miniseries "Sonic the Hedgehog: Imposter Syndrome", where the character Surge collapses into the pose at one point.

City Life DS
3
In 2022, the English rock band Arctic Monkeys released a song titled "Sculptures of Anything Goes", featuring the following lyric in the last verse of the song:

"The simulation cartridge for City Life '09 is pretty tricky to come by."

This lyric became the subject of news articles when fans on the music lyrics website Genius initially determined that it was referencing the obscure Nintendo DS game City Life DS, which only released in France in 2008 and the United Kingdom in 2009, and did not sell as well as previous games in the City Life series. Fans theorized that the difficulty in finding a copy of the game referenced in the lyric stemmed from Nintendo eventually discontinuing the DS family of systems to support future consoles. They also cited the closure of the Nintendo 3DS/Wii U versions of the Nintendo eShop as another possibility, but this was unfounded as City Life DS was only officially released as a physical cartridge and not part of the Wii U Virtual Console's Nintendo DS library.

However, it was confirmed in an interview with the band's frontman Alex Turner by Rolling Stone Germany on the day the song released that the lyric was not about City Life DS. He attributed the lyric to the works of author David Foster Wallace, most likely as a reference to his book "Infinite Jest" where the characters consume entertainment in the form of cartridges, which could also be referring to Turner's growing struggle to appeal and relate to Arctic Monkeys' audience from their earlier years as their sound and image changed later on.

Team Fortress 2
1
Attachment In 2013, Valve and the tabletop game company WizKids collaborated to produce an exclusive chess set themed around Team Fortress 2 that was sold on Valve's website and on ThinkGeek. Each copy of the set came with a digital code for a hat called the Grandmaster, where the head piece would change as your killstreak increases. Aside from "Grandmaster" being one of the highest titles awarded to chess players by the International Chess Federation, the hat's item description references a pair of highly publicized chess matches in 1996 and 1997 between former World Chess Champion Garry Kasparov, and IBM's chess-playing computer Deep Blue.

Attachment By clipping the camera through a wall in the 6th level "Munition Line", a hidden image of a creepy person can be found. This is an old Internet meme known as "Creepy Ugly Guy", a photoshopped image based on an example photo used in the API plug-in "Kai's Power Goo", that spliced together stock images of a man, a young girl, and a chimpanzee, and is believed to have been spread online as early as 1996 when the software originally came out.
