Star Fox Command
1
Attachment One of the most common criticisms regarding Star Fox Command's narrative from fans is the way it portrays Krystal as seemingly far more cold, harsh and bitter than she was in the previous Star Fox titles she appeared in. While some of this angst is still present in the Japanese script, there is comparatively much less of it and is written in a less exaggerated tone than in the Western localization.

For example, take this conversation:

Wolf: Enough chatter! We're flying through Sector X and that's final! It's the quickest way to Venom. When we get there, we wipe 'em out!
Leon: Whaaaa ha ha haa! Time for killin'! I haven't been this excited in a long time!
Panther: Maybe we should think it over. After all, there is a beautiful lady present. She is a delicate, fragile creature! We cannot just plunge into danger!
Krystal: Stuff it, Panther. Wolf, fly where you want. I just want to get going.
Falco: ...Oh, crud.
ROB: That looked like Krystal.
Falco: Yeah, it sure did. I wonder if it WAS her. She seems so... cold!

Here's this same conversation, but re-translated from the original Japanese text:

Wolf: いいか野郎ども!セクターXを経由して一気にベノムを落とす! いいな! (Listen up, you guys! We'll pass through Sector X and take down Venom in one go! Got it?)
Leon: 久々の大物にワクワクする…フフフフフ (Exciting to go after a big target after so long... Hehehe...)
Panther: おいおいウルフ お嬢さんもいるんだぜ! 野郎どもはないだろ? (Hey, Wolf, there's a lady here too, you know? It's not just us guys, right?)
Krystal: 私は大丈夫 気にしないで それより先を急ぎましょ (I'm fine, don't worry about it. Let's hurry on ahead.)
Falco: ...!!
NUS: クリスタルに酷似しています (She bears a striking resemblance to Krystal.)
Falco: 酷似も何も… クリスタルじゃねえか… (Resemblance? That's not just a resemblance... It IS Krystal!)

Notice how more aggressive Krystal comes across in the English script, something Falco takes note of, in comparison to the retranslated text where's she portrayed as more considerate.

Another example is during one of the Katina missions:

Fox: Krystal! I'm coming to cover you!
Krystal: Save it, loser! I don't need your help!

But re-translating the Japanese script, it reads like this:

Fox: クリスタル! 今から援護に向かう! (Krystal! We're on our way to cover you now!)
Krystal: あなたの援護はいらないわ (I don't need your backup.)

Obviously, Krystal is still portrayed as not being on good terms with Fox, but one can see the extra venom Nintendo of America included in their localization, by having her flat out call Fox a loser.

Another major example is this conversation at the end of the Fox and Krystal storyline:

Fox: Krystal, please find a way to forgive me! I'm sorry! I'm so sorry!
Krystal: Forgive you? Forgive you?! That's funny. I mean, that is simply hilarious. You treat me like dirt and I just forgive you? Is that it? ...Sniff... Jerk...
Fox: So... you won't come back to the team?
Slippy: C'mon, Krystal! You gotta come back!
Falco: Yeah, don't worry abut this furry idiot. Just get your tail back here.
Fox: We'll always be together. I promise.
Krystal: Ah, F-Fox, you... I... sniff... ...I'm an idiot. I can't believe I'm actually going to do it...Falco? Slippy? Thank you.

Now, here's the Japanese version of this retranslated:

Fox: 俺を許してくれ クリスタル (Please forgive me, Krystal.)
Krystal: 許してだなんて…そんな… 私…あなたに…ひどいことしたわ… しく…しく… (You want me to forgive you? But...I was...so horrible to you...sob...sob...)
Fox: このままチームに戻らないか? (Why don't we just go back to the team?)
Slippy: そうだよ! クリスタル! (Yes, Krystal!)
Falco: もう気にすることなんか何もねえ 戻って来い! (You got nothing to worry about. Come on back!)
Fox: これからはずっと一緒だ (We'll be together from now on.)
Krystal: しく…しく…ありがとうフォックス… (sob...sob...thank you Fox...thank you...Falco, Slippy...)

Krystal appears to be much more remorseful about her attitude and actions towards Fox (i.e joining up with Star Wolf and forcing him to beg for forgiveness in order to get her to rejoin the team) than she does in the English translation where she continues to be rather bitter and sarcastic towards him, to the point where she doesn't even thank Fox unlike with Falco and Slippy, which contradicts the original Japanese script.

The Oregon Trail
subdirectory_arrow_right The Oregon Trail (Game)
3
When The Oregon Trail was first being tested with 12-to-14 year olds at the Carlton College, the school faculty reacted negatively to offensive portrayals of Native American people in the game as tomahawk-wielding savages inspired by cowboy movies. While the developers of the game were initially offended by the prospect of changing the depiction, they eventually realized it was the right thing to do after questioning how an indigenous descendant would react to having to fight members of their race in the game.
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
1
Attachment Leaked development files for Yoshi's Island show graphics of a razor blade hazard or weapon, possibly intended to be thrown by an enemy. This was likely removed from the game over concerns of violence and/or imitability.
Awesome Possum Kicks Dr. Machino's Butt
1
Attachment On the HUD of Awesome Possum Kicks Dr. Machino's Butt!, there is a portrait of Awesome that will go from happy to agitated as he takes more damage - in prototype versions of the game, this instead has Awesome's skin slowly chip off to reveal his skull. Additionally, after dying in the prototype, he will turn into a skeleton, and when his last life is lost the screen will cut to red instead of teal. The final game's Game Over screen, which shows unspecified tombstones covered in trash and rats, could be considered a leftover from this darker direction for the game.

Freeway
1
Instead of a chicken who gets pushed backwards when run over, Freeway was originally going to feature a human protagonist who turns into a splatter of blood when killed. This version of the game is referred to by fans as Bloody Human Freeway.

The ZX Spectrum release of Bomberman was renamed Eric and the Floaters to prevent association with a series of terrorist bombings performed by Irish republican groups during The Troubles in 1984.
The Mysterious Murasame Castle

Attachment In the original game, the screen flashes black, red, and white when the thunder strikes the title screen. The Virtual Console release changes this to a single slower pink flash, as part of the Nintendo re-release tradition of lessening the chance of causing epileptic seizures.
PaRappa the Rapper 2
1
Two lyrics in PaRappa the Rapper 2 were censored for the US release - "We cook the best, tastes better than wine!" was changed to "We cook the best, you better get in line!" in Toasty Buns, and "I am the lord, everybody knows my name" was changed to "I am the man, everybody knows my name" in BIG and it's reprise in Food Court.

Attachment In the original Japanese and European versions, Paul Chuck's song had a line about "chopping trees down for fun". In the US, this was changed to "Knowing that we're here for the fun" in Lammy's song, and changed two times due to being repeated in PaRappa's version: "Rockin' to the beat just for fun" and "Rollin' up high in the sun". The censored version is used in Um Jammer Lammy NOW.

Suikoden II
1
Attachment In support of the New Game+ dungeon and Sindar Ruin connection, Suikosource user and dataminer JiN88 explored the Japanese demo to support the idea that Sindar Ruin underwent some major changes during development:

• In the entrance between White Deer Inn and Sindar Ruin, there are 2 statues that are generic. In the demo, those statues are gendered with pronounced breasts, and appear snake-like, resembling the Greek mythical monster Lamia. The generic statues exist in the demo, so there is no reason the developers would go out their way to make a different pair.

• At the last puzzle where you put the plate in, the plaque that you would normally read is there instead of in the room next ahead.

• The two statues of the Double Head are absent.

• In the boss room of Sindar Ruin, there is a weird sprite that isn't seen anywhere else (it's a bit grainy so to see it you will need to zoom in). The position looks like it's supposed to be for an arch, but notably it has three heads. Double Head is the boss you would normally meet here only with two heads, suggesting there was originally a boss here with three heads.

PaRappa the Rapper
1
PaRappa the Rapper had a scrapped character named "Mr. Poo-Poo" - lyric writer Ryu Watabe was responsible for the character's removal, and would say to The New York Times:

"In Japan, that's very acceptable. But I said: 'Look, if it's domestic, fine. But if you're going to make this into an international thing, we're not going to use Mr. Poo-Poo.' I had to draw the line somewhere."

It is unknown if Mr. Poo-Poo was a teacher or member of PaRappa's friend group.

While Mr. Poo-Poo was scrapped, the game would still receive toilet humor in the form of the Full Tank rap.
PaRappa the Rapper

In the US PSP and PS4 versions of PaRappa the Rapper, PJ Berri and Katy Kat's Chunky Burger orders in the intro are censored - in the PS1 version they ask for a "giant vanilla frosty" and a "large chocolate frosty" respectively, but in the remastered version they instead ask for a "giant vanilla" and "large chocolate". The subtitles for PJ's order completely omit any drink from his order. This is due to "Frosty" (in the context of a drink) being trademarked by Wendy's. Despite this copyright issue, the claim from Katy Kat that Jet Baby could defeat Superman goes uncensored.
Microsoft Minesweeper

Attachment The "Flower Garden" mode of Minesweeper was created to be more sensitive towards users in countries, such as Italy, where landmines are a common cause of death rather than seen as a war movie trope. It was originally only available to Italian players, but became a customization option in 2007's remake of Minesweeper, with Flower Garden being the only option for Italian players. in 2012's Microsoft Minesweeper, the Flower Garden mode would also be the only aesthetic option on Siberian and Chinese players.

Grimace's Birthday
1
The telephone line level of Grimace's Birthday was supposed to have energy running through the cables as a hazard, but this was objected to by McDonald's and replaced with a squirrel Grimace could bounce off of.
Barbie
1
During the development of the NES Barbie game, Mattel didn't want Barbie to be depicted fighting or dying. The development team worked around this by having the game take place in a dream, with the game over screen simply depicting Barbie waking up, and Barbie's enemies being swapped for allies she could prompt into clearing obstacles or opening paths.
Hell's Kitchen: The Game
2
Hell's Kitchen censors the profanity that made its source material famous - developer Ludia temporarily provided a more vulgar version of the PC game on its website as a limited time release, which was timed to be taken down following the finale of Season 4.
