In four separate 1989 issues of Video Games & Computer Entertainment, the mail-in game order service Play It Again put up an advertisement featuring a list of games customers could order. Among these is a mysterious title, Yeah Yeah Beebiss 1, which is not the name of any one game - this title would reappear in a separate advert for FuncoLand, under the name "Yeah Beebiss 1". To add further mystery to this game, it was placed between W and X games alphabetically instead of with Y games. There are multiple theories on the status of Beebiss:•Some believe that Beebiss is a baby-themed game like Baby Boomer, Rai Rai Kyonshis: Baby Kyonshi no Amida Daibouken, or Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa, given that "baby" sounds like "Beebiss" - with Rai Rai Kyonshis being considered the most likely candidate of the 3 for "Rai Rai"'s (A Japanese onomatopoeia associated with China) similarity to "Yeah Yeah", the game's release in 1989, and the presence of other import games on the listing. Rai Rai Kyonshis is generally the most accepted identity of the game.
•One theory proposes that the game was made as a copyright trap to catch which retailers are stealing game lists, something one of the founders of Play It Again confessed to doing, albeit without confirming if Beebiss was among those games.
•A rather strange theory proposes that the game was somehow related to exploring, possibly being Atlantis no Nazo's cancelled US release Super Pitfall II, named for Charles William Beebe, a famous explorer and naturalist
•Another theory suggests that the title was simply a bizarre, elaborate in-joke that both Play It Again and FuncoLand employees were in on.
The myth of Beebiss would inspire the game Yeah Yeah Beebiss II, developed by popular retro gaming YouTuber John Riggs and based on the aesthetic of Rai Rai Kyonshis.

As a reward for contributing a $100+ donation to the game's Kickstarter campaign, backers could choose to join a clan of their choice to appear under in the game's credits. Six "Sword or Whip" Clans (connected to a vote on if Miriam's personal weapon should be a sword or a whip) were dedicated to voting on which Sword or Whip weapon would become the most powerful weapon in the game (the winner being Clan Katana with the Grand Izayoi sword), while the remaining eighteen clans were Community or YouTube Partner Clans, who would receive a code for a clan-specific item.The Community Clans were represented by two Castlevania fan communities: the Dungeon clan (The Castlevania Dungeon forums), and the Operation Akumajo clan (a Castlevania Facebook group spun off from The Castlevania Dungeon dedicated to promoting the series following its 25th anniversary in 2011). The YouTubers and other companies who participated in the last clan group were associated with Fangamer, a video game merchandising company who managed the Kickstarter campaign for Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. To unlock one of the Community/YouTube Partner Clan items, you must enter its respective code as the name for your save file, and as such only one clan item can be unlocked per save file. •SwimmingBird941: swimmingbird - unlocks the Plague Doctor Face (possibly a reference to the anime "Cowboy Bebop", as series protagonist Spike Spiegel is referred to as "Swimming Bird" by a Native American medicine man named Laughing Bull)
•Far From Subtle: AWESOMEVIDEOGAMES - unlocks the Big Mustache (an in-joke from their series VideoGames AWESOME!)
•The Speed Gamers: TheSpeedGamers - unlocks the Final Hour sword (a speedrunning-themed sword)
•Egoraptor: Egoraptor - unlocks Hey I'm Grump (a helmet of Arin Hanson's stylized head from Game Grumps' intro)
•Game Grumps: Grumps - unlocks I'm Not So Grump (a helmet of Dan Avidan's stylized head from Game Grumps' intro)
•Mega64: Jarvis Meower - unlocks the Mega64 Helmet (a collage of various recurring in-jokes throughout Mega64's run)
•Kinda Funny Games: TEAMFAT - unlocks A Kinda Funny Mask (the company's logo, the code being a reference to the #TeamFat in-joke from one of their series)
•The Zaibatsu Clan (Super Best Friends Play): BULLFIGHTER - unlocks The-Baz Mask (a mask based on an original character created by Super Best Friends Play who has made cameo appearances in various indie games)
•AlphaOmegaSin: ALPHAOMEGASIN - unlocks the Darkness Descends sword (possibly a reference to the studio album of the same name by American thrash metal band Dark Angel, which AlphaOmegaSin has described as "one of my go-to albums")
•Game Sack: 8MEGAPOWER - unlocks the Game Sack Strip sword (a reference to an in-joke regarding various novelty power strips)
•Vinesauce: SPONGYVINE - unlocks the Vine Sword (a sword themed around Vinesauce game glitch/corruption content with a green mushroom [Vinesauce's logo, the "Vineshroom"] as the sword's helm). The name of the code is derived from Sponge, a recurring in-joke character from their streams who is depicted as the depressed third Mario brother.

In the Easter egg "Developer's Grove" area that is unlocked upon donating 10,000 Rapo-Coins to the Wishing Well, one of the developers will inform the player that there is a "secret flower" hidden in the game that can bring the Mayor, who dies in the final world, back from the dead - while another developer tells the player that the other developer is lying. There is no secret flower.

In Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne, during Part III: Chapter Three: A Mob War, you can find a hidden dialogue between two Punchinello mobsters while they stand guard by a staircase waiting for intruders:
This line is a reference to an old meme from the 3D Realms forums. The exact origins of this meme are not entirely known, but in a developer Q&A that occurred at an unknown date (either for the first Max Payne game, or in the lead-up to Max Payne 2's announcement at E3 2002 going off of what could be easily found in 3D Realms' forum archives), one fan asked them "What about moving?", a seemingly vague and unnecessary question. This question perplexed the game's fan community and developers, who promised that moving would appear in the final game, and it did. The question subsequently became an early popular meme on the forums, later being referenced in Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne. In a thread on October 8th, six days prior to the game's release, in anticipation for another developer Q&A, the line as it appears in the game appeared to be referenced in a post presumably by a Remedy Entertainment staff member or moderator, who quoted the first two lines in the dialogue.

"Reallyjoel's Dad" is a name for a secret difficulty present in Ludosity games, introduced in an update to Iji, that makes games absurdly hard and sometimes even unbeatable. This originates from an in-joke based on a comment made by Ludosity developer reallyjoel on a YouTube video of Iji's final boss being beaten on the previously maximum "Ultimortal" difficulty, uploaded by Daniel Remar, another developer on Iji, saying "Bah, you're a noob. My dad can beat this on a much harder setting, no sweat."

During development of PaRappa the Rapper 2, the Boxy Boy tutorials at the start of each stage were referred to as "Rodney Levels" in reference to character designer Rodney Greenblat's difficulty playing Um Jammer Lammy. Greenblat has said that Masaya Matsuura intended it as a compromise after Um Jammer Lammy proved to be too hard for the children it was aimed at, but he still wanted to implement complex button patterns.

Beard Burger Master voice actor Ethan Eubanks has claimed that the non-rhythmic quips that Beard Burger Master says between lines in his song were not part of the script, and instead improvised. Bubsy's catchphrase, "what could possibly go wrong?", originated as a self-deprecating catchphrase from the Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind development team when the game ran into issues. Matthew Patrick (or "MatPat"), a YouTuber known for making a multitude of Five Nights at Freddy's analysis videos throughout the series' history for his series "Game Theory", makes a cameo as a waiter in the 2023 "Five Nights at Freddy's" film. The coffee shop that he works at is named Sparky's (a nod to Sparky the Dog, one of the series' earliest fan-made hoaxes). MatPat's character's name as seen on his name tag is Ness, which, according to series creator Scott Cawthon, is a reference to a 2016 Game Theory video where MatPat theorized that Sans from Undertale was Ness from EarthBound. MatPat's final line in his scene is "but that's just a theory", a portion of his catchphrase used in the majority of his videos.
A pinned comment left by Cawthon on a "Film Theory" video where MatPat goes into further detail on his cameo in the film claimed that the packed theater Cawthon watched the film in "ERUPTED in cheers" when MatPat appeared.

The article was edited on May 16, 2009, after the "game" had achieved viral popularity, to inform readers that the site hosts had received new information about the game and were flying to Kyiv, Ukraine to investigate the title, which they would update the page on when they found out. No news has been recorded on Polybius since, but the website would have new games added to its database up to 2021.
Kurt Koller, the webmaster for coinop.org, would later claim in 2021 that he planned to go to Kyiv in 2009 to see Chernobyl, but his friend from Ukraine refused because he was expecting a child, meaning that the "Polybius update" may have just been an in-joke related to this visit.
