Cabbage
subdirectory_arrow_right Animal Crossing (Franchise), Nintendo 64DD (Platform), Nintendo 64 (Platform), Nintendogs (Collection)
1
There was a game by the name of Cabbage which was to be developed and released for the Nintendo 64DD, an expansion peripheral for the Nintendo 64. The project was helmed by Shigesato Itoi, creator of the Mother series, with other big name developers eventually being added on to help finish the project. Even with this help it would never see the light of day. It was said by Shigeru Miyamoto that, "the conversations and design techniques that popped up when we were making Cabbage are, of course, connected to Nintendogs and other things that we're doing now." Those "other things" most likely referring to Animal Crossing as it used many of the base elements said to have been made for Cabbage including the internal clock feature of the N64DD. To this day there are no known screenshots, videos, or demos of this cancelled game.

At Spaceworld 2000, Shigeru Miyamoto showed off a tech demo for a project he had been working on for a number of years known as Mario 128. This project had a tumultuous development cycle with little to no details coming out over the years until finally in 2007 at a GDC Keynote he revealed what came of this laborious project. He explained that some parts of the project were used to make Pikmin and other parts of the project were utilized in Super Mario Galaxy.

Luigi's Mansion
subdirectory_arrow_right Pikmin (Game), Nintendo GameCube (Platform)
1
Attachment At Spaceworld 2000, Shigeru Miyamoto showed off a prototype for the GameCube controller. The most glaring difference between this controller and the final design are the color and shape of three buttons:
• The A button being blue, like the Z button rather than green, but keeping it's circular shape.
• The B button being green, like the final A button rather than red, and bean shaped like the X and Y buttons rather than circular.
• The start button being red like the final B button as well as being bulbous and protruding as compared to the final start button being flat, grey, and made of rubber.

An accompanying tech demo used assets from Luigi's Mansion including one of the basic ghosts which reacted differently depending on what button was used:
• Using the A, B, X, and Y buttons made it spit out the corresponding letter
• Stretching for the L button and squishing for the R button
• Emitting a slower version of Boo's laugh for the Z button
• Emitting a normal ghost noise for the control stick
• Changing orientation for the C-stick
• Emitting sounds similar to that of Pikmin for any of the D-pad directions

The inclusion of the Pikmin noises makes sense as Luigi's Mansion contained a trailer for Pikmin upon release.

Quest for Camelot
2
A Nintendo 64 version of the game was planned, but was scrapped due to the poor box office performance of the film.
30XX
1
The character Delta was originally created by artist Glauber Kotaki back in 2002, for a personal project which never saw the light of day. Delta's first appearance in a game was the 2009 Mega Man fangame "22XX Grand Tournament".

One Night at Flumpty's 3
1
While Jonochrome always intended to bring back both The Beaver and The Owl for One Night at Flumpty's 3, he did not want to revisit the "Toilet Paper Mummy Beaver" idea from the cancelled game "One Week at Flumpty's", as he knew people would be expecting it. He also tried to come up with a way to incorporate both of them in a way to implement both characters separately without their mechanics being identical, but nothing he came up with felt natural. Eventually, he decided to kill off The Owl the same way he killed off The Beaver in One Night at Flumpty's 2, and combine the corpses of the two functionally-similar characters into "The Beavowel". He did, however, realize late in development that "The Bowel" made more sense for the name, but chose to stick with The Beavowel as it "sounds stupider".
Sonic Forces
2
While the final game only uses seven different species for the Avatar, several were considered during development, such as raccoons, dogs, squirrels, rats, pigs, lizards and more. The last species to be added was narrowed down to three options: a monkey, a dragon, and a bear. The bear ultimately won out, due to being usable as a power-type character.

Eastern and Western preferences were also taken into account when deciding certain details for the Avatar. For example, eye shapes that were deemed too cute/juvenile were altered to appeal more to a Western audience. This is part of the reason why the dragon was ultimately rejected, as the devs felt it was too Eastern-centric, and wanted to prioritize more neutral animal choices.

Annalynn
2
A spider enemy was originally set to appear if the player took too long in a level, but was cut since their mechanic would run contrary to the game's focus on enemy combos.

The spider, now named Gil, would appear in a 2023 remake of the 2016 version of Annalynn as an optional enemy.
Annalynn
2
Annalynn originally began development as Minecade, starring a generic male miner. After being inspired by Ms. Pac-Man, however, Cruise Elroy replaced him with Annalynn, with the game being renamed in her stead.
NBA Jam

Attachment Bart Simpson and Godzilla were planned to be playable in NBA Jam, but were scrapped. There exists a video from NBA Jam's development showing reference footage of Bart and Godzilla action figures being filmed against a blue screen, as well as color palletes in the game's code labeled "B" and "G", which have yellow skin and green scales respectively.

Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time
1
Despite Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time's intense difficulty, the game's producer Louis Studdert was concerned before the game's launch that Toys for Bob may have made it too easy.
Mario Kart Tour
subdirectory_arrow_right Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Game)
1
The racers may have planned to have losing animations for when they reach 5th or lower. In the game's data are Peachette and Pauline's losing voice clips, as well as voice clips from characters that appear in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (prior to the Booster Course Pass). The final game has the racers appear neutral should the player end up in 5th place or lower.

Since Pauline and Peachette were included as among two of the final four characters in the Booster Course Pass, these unused voice clips may have been a deciding factor behind their inclusion in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
Five Nights at Freddy's Plus
1
Attachment The animatronics' design in Five Nights at Freddy's Plus were inspired by the old, neglected or in-disrepair animatronics from abandoned locations, such as the animatronics from the West Virginia restaurant Billy Bob's Wonderland.

Missile Command
2
The originally planned title for Missile Command was "Armageddon", but this name was vetoed by upper management due to issues that children would have with spelling and pronouncing the name. It's also suggested that various members of Atari's upper management didn't know what the word actually meant. As such, the alternative title of "Missile Command" came about.
MyPopgoes
1
MyPOPGOES was entirely hand-drawn and developed in less than one month.
Sonic Superstars
3
Sonic Team was surprised by the excitement towards the return of obscure characters Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirrel in Sonic Mania Plus, leading them to decide to bring back another obscure character for Sonic Superstars. They ultimately went with Fang the Hunter (then known as Nack the Weasel or Fang the Sniper), one of the main antagonists of Sonic the Hedgehog: Triple Trouble.
Windows Solitaire
1
Windows Solitaire was originally going to feature a "Boss Key" that would switch the game to a fake spreadsheet to fool bosses of workers playing the game. This was removed at Microsoft's request.
Nicktoons: Attack of the Toybots
1
Attachment While the Nicktoons Unite! game franchise exclusively featured characters from Nickelodeon cartoons, concept art for the Fairy Harvester stage from Nicktoons: Attack of the Toybots shows Parker from the live-action puppet series Mr. Meaty on a sign for a fake restaurant made to lure fairies.
Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl
1
Attachment In Sports mode, the Arnold football has an indicator above it to inform players that it must be grabbed and not hit. This graphic, however, is a crude placeholder graphic that appears to have slipped into the final game.
Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl
1
Every character in Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl has an internal codename used instead of their name. These are:

• Pizza - Michelangelo (The Ninja Turtles are known to love pizza, with Michelangelo being the biggest fan of the food among his brothers)
• Cheese - Shredder (Shredder's character design was based on a cheese grater)

• Snake - Oblina (Oblina has a thin, somewhat curved shape akin to a snake)
• Rival - Helga (Helga has a love-hate relationship with series protagonist Arnold)
• Narrator - Nigel (Nigel hosts his own nature show-within-a-show called Nigel Thornberry's Animal World)
