Attachment If the New Donk City Hall stage loops three times, or a music track from the game Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is playing, Captain Toad will cameo on the stage. This references Super Mario Odyssey where Captain Toad will occasionally appear.

On September 21, 2020, as part of his podcast BumbleKast, writer Ian Flynn expressed interest in adapting Cosmo and the Metarex from the animated series "Sonic X" into IDW's Sonic the Hedgehog comics, which would effectively incorporate them into the mainline Sonic canon. A year later, he would reveal that said arc would not happen anytime soon, as fellow writer Evan Stanley had more stories that needed to be finished. In January 2024, however, Flynn revealed that most content that comes from the show is off the table, including characters such as Cosmo, the Metarex, Topaz, Mr. Tanaka, and Ella.

However, there may be an exception to this in the form of the "Next Show", a fictional children's show featuring a purple mascot character named Next that Cream and Cheese are shown to be fans of during Sonic X. The show was first referenced in Cream's Sonic Channel profile, where it was listed as one of her likes. Later, 2023 would feature two seperate instances of the show being referenced: first during the "Otherworld Comedy" series of wallpapers posted on Sonic Channel, where it was mentioned in the story for the May 2023 wallpaper ("Story Act 5: My Vector Man"), then later as part of the official Christmas 2023 picture, where a toy based on Next appears amongst the pile of gifts.

Attachment One of Master Hand's attacks has him firing what appear to be golden versions of the Banzai Bill enemies from Super Mario World. These predate the first appearance of a Gold Bullet Bill in the Mario series 3 years later in Super Mario Sunshine. This would also mark one of the few times that one of Master Hand's attacks references another series outside of the Kirby franchise.

Dragon Ball Z: The Legacy of Goku II
3
Attachment An NPC appearing in Dragon Ball Z: The Legacy of Goku II is potentially a reference to American domestic terrorist Ted Kaczynski, the Unabomber. It should be noted that while his character portrait and overworld sprite look similar to Kaczynski, it is used for several different NPC characters in the game, so it's unknown if he was originally intended to physically resemble the real-life Unabomber. However, like the Unabomber this character is also named Ted, he moved to a cabin in the woods, and believes society is too reliant on industrial technology, even complimenting Vegeta on "blowing up" a neighbor's generator after he failed to destroy it himself. His dialogue is the following:

Ted: "I moved out here because society is too reliant on Capsule technology. Civilization is falling apart, and we've all filled our pockets with capsules, SUV's and capsule cappuccino machines. It is unnatural. It was very peaceful here - until that Vinnie guy moved in. He makes me sick! Listen to that music he is always playing:

"Feel the danger around you!
The black darkness surrounds you!"
"What are you going to do?
The eyes of the lion!"

I can't stand that corporate pop music Vinnie is always playing: [same lyrics as above]

[After destroying Vinnie's generator]: You blew up his generator? I like your style! I would have done it myself, but I couldn't figure out his security code."

Attachment In Final Egg, two large stasis tubes can be found. One holds Metal Sonic, while the other holds an unknown Sonic-based robot, later referred to as Mecha Sonic Mark III by Ian Flynn. This robot has no importance in the story, however, it seems to be based heavily on the design of Mechagodzilla from the "Godzilla" franchise's Shōwa era, due to many similar parts and possible textures from the robot. This also seems to be a reference to Mecha Sonic Mark I, also known as Silver Sonic from Sonic the Hedgehog 2, whose concept art also shows similarities to Mechagodzilla.

Sonic Adventure
2
Attachment In Speed Highway, several billboards can be found depicting an unknown female character. In 2020, Satoshi Okano, a former designer at Sega who worked on Sonic Adventure, revealed that this was a scrapped spider character he designed with the prototype name "Spider Girl", and posted an old sketch of the character alongside a sketch of another scrapped character, a bat named "Fly the Vampire". In 2023, Okano posted an inked version of the original Spider Girl sketch from the same time period alongside several inked sketches from the development of Samba de Amigo. Spider Girl's appearance on the billboards in Sonic Adventure suggests that the character lasted far enough into the game's development to receive a 3D model, but the character was ultimately scrapped for unknown reasons, and this 3D model has yet to surface on its own. It's unknown what role either Spider Girl or Fly were intended to have, though fans have noted that Spider Girl has some similarities to Rouge the Bat from Sonic Adventure 2, namely both characters have large bosoms and prominent heart-based/romantic imagery.

The Adventures of Quik & Silva
subdirectory_arrow_right Sonic The Hedgehog (Franchise)
2
Attachment Quik & Silva features many plagiarized characters as duplicated enemies, including characters from Nebulus, Bubble Bobble, Contra, and The Great Giana Sisters. Among these characters is Sonic the Hedgehog, whose first title had not released at that point, technically making it Sonic's first appearance in a home console video game, even if unauthorized and predated by the arcade game Rad Mobile.

The Myconid is a race of intelligent fungus creatures appearing in Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei. This is notable as while the concept of mushroom creatures is well known in pop culture, the specific term “Myconid” was specifically invented for the fantasy tabletop role playing game Dungeons & Dragons.

Attachment Prior to doing official work on the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise as one of its writers/artists, Evan Stanley worked on a fan comic called "Ghosts of the Future" based on the series. Set in an alternate reality where Sonic and his friends are defeated by Dr. Eggman with the aid of a mind-controlled Shadow, the comic featured Silver the Hedgehog as the main character, tasked with restoring the seven Chaos Emeralds that were removed from time as a last resort. After being brought on to do official work on the franchise, the fan comic has been referenced on two occasions in official Sonic comics. The first was in issue 257 of Archie's Sonic the Hedgehog comic, which featured cameos from Richard and Deborah Erin (Silver's parents in the comic) during the scene where Rotor is directing rescue operations outside Twinkle Park (note that they are slightly recolored in this scene). The second time was in issue 64 of IDW's Sonic the Hedgehog comic, which featured cameos from Vanice the Hedgehog and Sicily the Hedgehog (Silver's sisters in the comic) during the scene where Silver and Whisper are trying to confront Duo.

Garfield's Scary Scavenger Hunt
subdirectory_arrow_right Garfield's Scary Scavenger Hunt 2 (Game), Garfield (Franchise)
2
Attachment Garfield's Scary Scavenger Hunt features a cameo from Lyman, Odie's original owner who disappeared from the Garfield comics in 1983, where he is chained up in the basement of the haunted house. This somewhat lines up with a joke in the 1998 book 20 Years & Still Kicking! Garfield’s Twentieth Anniversary Collection, where a comedic list of reasons for Lyman's disappearance was provided, with "Don't look in Jon's basement!" listed as #1. The difference from the book being that the Scary Scavenger Hunt game does not take place in Jon's house, nor is the haunted house ever said to belong to the Arbuckle family.

Lyman also makes a second cameo in the game's sequel Garfield's Scary Scavenger Hunt II: Donuts of Doom, where his severed head can be found inside of an oven.

Lyman would eventually reappear in The Garfield Show where he was said to have left for Australia to find cryptids and protect animals from poachers.

Sonic the Fighters
subdirectory_arrow_right Wreck-It Ralph (Franchise)
2
Attachment Sonic and Dr. Eggman’s cameos in the 2012 film "Wreck-It Ralph" and its 2018 sequel "Ralph Breaks the Internet" can be attributed to a Sonic the Fighters arcade cabinet being in Litwak’s Arcade. The arcade cabinet in the film uses the title "Sonic Championship", as the game was named this outside of Japan. Despite the game using the classic designs for the characters, Sonic and Eggman are shown in their modern designs inside the gaming world.

In Chapter 3 Section 1 'Rose's Room - Pillow Fort', players will come across a pillow alcove towards the left of the main path that features two action figures with interactive buttons. The action figures themselves are actually the two playable protagonists Leo & Vincent from Hazelight Studios' other project A Way Out. If both players stomp both buttons at the same time, a unique dialogue cutscene between Leo & Vincent will play. After the dialogue, an achievement/trophy 'Plastic Prison Breakers' is earned with the description, "They had no way out."

While the protagonist of Yakuza: Like a Dragon, Ichiban Kasuga, is commonly stated to have debuted in the 2018 game Ryu Ga Gotoku Online, he actually was first revealed in a trailer for the game Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise, which is considered a spin-off of the Yakuza/Like a Dragon franchise. This trailer aired almost a year before Ryu Ga Gotoku Online and is notable as Ichiban does not appear in Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise.

Attachment In a rare instance of Kingdom Hearts being referenced outside of KH-related Disney media, the Kingdom Key and Sora's hair can be seen within Sweet Pete’s assortment of cartoon props in the 2022 film "Chip & Dale: Rescue Rangers". An interesting detail about this cameo is that Sora's hair appears to have been traced or taken from DeviantArt user kimbolie12's fan art of Sora from Kingdom Hearts III.

Sonic Robo Blast 2
2
Attachment In Greenflower Zone Act 1, there is a house in the upper section of the level next to a lake. If the player has all 200 Emblems, this house will have a note on it thanking the player for keeping the game alive.

This house belongs to the in-universe persona of RedXVI, an old member of the Sonic fangame community who had significant influence over Sonic Robo Blast 2's development.

The location of this note is a reference to Version 1.09 of the game, where an Easter egg was hidden on the very same house. In this version, jumping on the house would cause RedXVI to come out and send the player to an early work-in-progress version of Red Volcano Zone Act 1 if the player jumped on the house repeatedly after beating the game three times.

Commander Keen: Goodbye Galaxy!
2
Attachment One of the enemies in the "Secret of the Oracle" episode, Dopefish, was a "stupid little fish" created by the game's designer Tom Hall and described in-game as "the second-dumbest creature in the universe" (in reference to the dumbest creature in the universe, the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal from Douglas Adams' "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" franchise), and has since gone on to develop a cult following and become one of the biggest recurring in-jokes in the video game industry due to the sheer amount of games it has made appearances in (a large chunk of which having Tom Hall's involvement).

As of October 2021, Dopefish has made known appearances in Wacky Wheels, Rise of the Triad, Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior, Quake, Quake II, Quake III Arena, Jazz Jackrabbit 2, SiN, Descent 3, Battlezone, Kingpin, Daikatana, Anachonox, Max Payne, Hyperspace Delivery Boy, Commander Keen (2001), Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Eternal Daughter, Hitman 2: Silent Assassin, Red Faction, Congo Cube, The Frozen Throne expansion to Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos, SiN Episodes: Emergence, Chili Con Carnage, TAGAP: The Apocalyptic Game About Penguins, Fortress Forever, OFF, Dystopia, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Pettington Park, Rocketbirds: Hardboiled Chicken, Warsow, Bombshell, Doom (2016), Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, Ion Fury, and Doom Eternal.

Beyond video games, Dopefish notably made a cameo appearance in the animated series "Tiny Toon Adventures" in the 1992 episode "Toon TV" during the song "Toon In, Toon Out", which aired less than a year after the release of Commander Keen in "Goodbye, Galaxy!". Dopefish also cameoed in "Lakewood Plaza Turbo", the pilot episode to the 2017 animated series "OK K.O.! Let's Be Heroes".
