Donkey Kong
subdirectory_arrow_right Mario (Franchise)
1
According to series creator Shigeru Miyamoto, Mario's appearance was the result of graphical limitations in the original Donkey Kong: his overalls allowed his arms to be visible against his body (as there was no room for outlines), his hat substituted for hair and eyebrows (and did not need to be animated when he jumped), and the large nose and mustache made up for the lack of space to depict a mouth.

Miyamoto additionally stated that the design was influenced by the decision to make Mario Italian-American, identifying his large nose in particular as a distinctly western feature.

Fallout 3
1
Attachment In the Broken Steel DLC, in the cutscene used for when the player character travels on the Presidential metro, the moving train is not a separate entity programmed to move on its own due to limitations with the Gamebryo engine. Instead, when the player goes on the metro, a script is triggered that equips an NPC underneath the train with a glove that turns its right hand invisible and produces the model for the Presidential metro car on top of it appearing like a giant hat. This then triggers an animation of the NPC's model sitting down and gliding along the ground in an arc that simulates the metro riding along the subway tracks.

Rivet City's Abraham Washington is the name of this NPC and is a reference to two former United States Presidents, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.
Final Fantasy VIII

In the Galbadia Missile Base control room, while in the "Equipment" section of the launch configuration panel, you can simultaneously press V/B/Up/Down (PC version) or Triangle/Square/Up/Down (PlayStation version) to view animations of an Elite Soldier and a G-Soldier dancing. Rinoa will laugh and comment on each animation.
LittleBigPlanet PS Vita

Colonel Flounder and Mrs. Sunshine's eyelids are loaded as separate models rather than as a part of their bodies, most likely to help with blinking animations. It's possible to see what they look like without their eyelids in Create Mode by placing a Sackbot wearing either character's costume in front of any material and then hiding the Sackbot. While the Sackbot will appear transparent, its eyelids completely disappear.

1
Attachment In Street Fighter III: 2nd Impact there is an unused female voice that doesn't match either Elena or Ibuki. It's possible these voice lines belonged to an earlier version of Makoto, as she was originally meant to debut in this game but was moved to 3rd Strike due to time constrains.
Rocko's Modern Life: Spunky's Dangerous Day

Nickelodeon 3D Movie Maker
1
Attachment In the city set of Nickelodeon 3D Movie Maker, a fried chicken store titled "Chick N' Chunks" can be seen. This is not the name of any one location from any Nickelodeon series, but its branding is reminiscent of the Chokey Chicken restaurant from Rocko's Modern Life, a connection further supported by Filburt and Dr. Hutchison's trailer home appearing on the same map.

In Season 4 of Rocko's Modern Life, released the same year as Nickelodeon 3D Movie Maker, the Chokey Chicken was renamed "Chewy Chicken" due to the original name's sexual slang meaning, meaning that Chick N' Chunks may have been an alternate censorship of the "Chokey Chicken" name.

WarioWare: Smooth Moves

Attachment The background of the Punch-Out!! microgame is a screenshot taken in an unofficial Japanese emulator known as VirtuaNES, as can be noted by a Windows 9X window framing the background. This window is covered by an illustration of a television in the game.
Snow Bros. 2: With New Elves

Attachment For the US release of Snow Bros. 2: With New Elves, the character select screen portraits were changed from stylized line drawings of the characters to bizarre modified photographs of infants.

An unused animation of Toadette in her artwork pose can be found in the data. The final version contains only static images for each character.
The Real Ghostbusters
subdirectory_arrow_right Mickey Mouse IV: Mahou no Labyrinth (Game), Garfield Labyrinth (Game)
2
Attachment The game's data contains sprites depicting Kid Klown and Princess Honey from Kid Klown in Night Mayor World, with them filling the roles of the protagonist and damsel in distress, respectively. This indicates that the game was originally devised as a Kid Klown title before being retooled around the Mickey Mouse, Garfield, and Ghostbusters franchises (depending on the region) midway through development. Ironically, Kid Klown in Night Mayor World was itself a retooled English localization of a Mickey Mouse game.

Eek! The Cat
1
Attachment Eek! the Cat has been noted for having an unusually dark color palette that makes the graphics hard to read. This is not the result of a faulty brightness register, but simply how the game's palettes are stored in the code. Marketing materials for the game show screenshots that are much brighter in palette and closer to both the game's original form as Sleepwalker and its cartoon source material, meaning that the palette error was likely a mistake made late in the game's development.

Shin Megami Tensei IV
1
Attachment After the Alignment Lock happens near the end of the game, if you return to Club Milton in Shibuya, you can view a hidden scene showing the accented club manager busily attending to a surge of demon customers. If you listen closely, the music that plays in the background is a remix of the Normal Battle theme from Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne. During the same scene, one of the sprites shown bears a striking resemblance to actor Heath Ledger, based on his appearance as the Joker wearing a nurse's outfit in the 2008 film "The Dark Knight".

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
1
Attachment If the player tries to overwrite a different save file from the one they're currently using, the phrase "Not your last save. Save here anyway?" will pop up on the screen. If the player says no to this question 10 times and then say yes on the 11th attempt, Mario will hunch over on the save screen looking sad. Curiously if the player says no 11 times and says yes on the 12th attempt, Mario will instead have an angry appearance. Reportedly, whichever face is chosen based on if the number of times the player say no is even or odd before eventually saying yes.
Yo! Noid
2
Attachment Unusually, the Noid's sprites in Stage 13 of Yo! Noid are marginally different from the sprites used in the rest of the game. The graphics of the Noid are stored multiple times in game's code, and the Stage 13 sprites are the first stored, meaning that this could be an early revision of the Noid's sprite that was not removed.
Berenstain Bears in Big Paw's Cave
1
Attachment Owing to its elusive rarity, obscurity, and existence within the very small collector niche of pre-school entertainment, Berenstain Bears in Big Paw's Cave has not been properly archived for emulators. Every piece of video footage of the game online shows the game as taking place on a black background, giving it a resemblance to games from much earlier points in arcade history, while the flyer for the game shows a much more colorful backdrop with more details.
Rocko's Modern Life: Match-Master
1
Attachment Several of the tiles in Rocko's Modern Life: Match-Master are based on different cropped areas of promotional images used on other tiles. There are two tile sets based on a promotional image showing Rocko and his friends on a couch watching TV - one that shows the entire image, while the other is zoomed in on Ed and Bev Bighead. The tile that shows the entire image does not crop out Ed and Bev, leading to what could be considered, by technicality, partially duplicate tile sets.
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
2
Attachment In a 1995 developer interview, Shigeru Miyamoto stated that the Super Star was originally going to briefly transform Baby Mario into his adult self. However, the idea was discarded after one of the developers pointed out that it would clash with the game's premise of being an origin story for the Mario brothers. Instead, Super Star Mario was redesigned to simply be Baby Mario in a yellow cape.

In 2020, sprites for Mario's adult form were uncovered as part of a massive leak of data from Nintendo's internal servers. These sprites indicate that Super Star Mario was not originally able to float in the air and that he was able to ride Yoshi to some extent (in the final game, Yoshi reverts to an egg until the Super Star wears off).

Microsoft Minesweeper
subdirectory_arrow_right Microsoft Minesweeper (Game), Microsoft Minesweeper (Game)
1
Attachment The "Flower Garden" mode of Minesweeper was created to be more sensitive towards users in countries, such as Italy, where landmines are a common cause of death rather than seen as a war movie trope. It was originally only available to Italian players, but became a customization option in 2007's remake of Minesweeper, with Flower Garden being the only option for Italian players. in 2012's Microsoft Minesweeper, the Flower Garden mode would also be the only aesthetic option on Siberian and Chinese players.

Knuckles' Chaotix
subdirectory_arrow_right Sonic The Hedgehog (Franchise)
1
Attachment Dr. Starline the Platypus from the IDW Sonic the Hedgehog comic series is inspired by a glitch character from Knuckles' Chaotix - a silver, red and charcoal Knuckles recolor, known by fans as "Wechnia", but by the game itself as "**********", seemingly based on unused data for Tails. Starline's color scheme is taken directly from Wechnia, his name is a literal take on the name "**********", (or "star-line") the black streak in his fur resembles the red streaks all over Wechnia's fur, and the choice of a platypus seems to be inspired by how certain Wechnia sprites would make the bottom of his muzzle yellow and loosely resemble shading for the underside of a flat bill, alongside platypi being Australian like echidnas.
