Mafia: Definitive Edition
1
Mafia: Definitive Edition features two radio stations that can be played while driving vehicles, but when putting on a song, the quality will be lower and muffled and take a few seconds to be at full quality. This was to reference the technology of the 1930's when the game is set in, where most radios were made with vacuum tubes or valves and would take time to warm up for sound to properly be carried.

Despite Mafia taking place from 1930 to 1938, Molotov cocktails appear as a useable item and are specifically called Molotov cocktails, despite that name first being coined afterwards in 1939 by Finns fighting against the Soviet Union during the Russo-Finnish Winter War.

During The Game Awards 2022, Christopher Judge's acceptance speech for the "Best Performance" award (given to him for his performance as Kratos in God of War Ragnarök) ran for 7 minutes and 59 seconds. This speech has been noted for surpassing the Guinness World Record for the "Longest speech accepting an Oscar award", which is currently held by actress Greer Garson for her speech at the 15th Academy Awards in 1943, which lasted for 5 minutes and 30 seconds. The length of Judge's speech was referenced during his appearance at The Game Awards 2023, where he presented that year's award for "Best Performance". Prior to announcing the nominees, he took the opportunity to poke fun at the length of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III's campaign, claiming "my speech last year was longer than this year's Call of Duty campaign". Following the ceremony, several developers who currently and formerly worked on the Call of Duty series responded negatively to the roast, with Sledgehammer Games engineer Darcy Sandall saying:

"Honestly, as COD developers, we've heard way worse. But we don't expect it from a peer, at an event that supposed to be celebrating this years achievements in gaming. Especially with all the information that was leaked about it's development."

It's worth noting that both before and after release, Modern Warfare III's campaign mode was heavily criticized, with many describing it as shallow, short, rushed, and disappointing in spite of its technical aspects.

Net High
1
Net High's gameplay is noted to be similar to the Ace Attorney series of games in regards to its puzzle-solving, though instead of solving cases in a courtroom, the goal is to reveal the identity of people on the internet. According to an interview with XSeed, the reason the game was not localized was because most of the puzzles were based on Japanese puns and wordplay using written kanji characters that often have multiple meanings, made more difficult by the fact that a lot of the text was displayed from top to bottom rather than from left to right.

Dave the Diver
3
During the lead-up to The Game Awards 2023, several people became confused by Dave the Diver's nomination for "Best Independent Game" since Mintrocket, the game's developer, is a subsidiary of the much larger Nexon, who had previously claimed that the game was not necessarily an indie. This sparked debates as to what exactly counts as an "indie" video game, as another game that had received nominations, Baldur's Gate 3, was also technically independent, but was likely not counted due to both Larian Studio's employee count and the use of an existing IP. The Game Awards' host Geoff Keighley would later respond that "independent can mean different things to different people", and that it was up to a jury to decide the final decisions. During this, a similar debate arose in regards to the "Games for Impact" nomination: described as "a locker to stuff all the diverse games into", it was noted that five of the six nominees had not received any other nominations, and seemed limited to independent games despite there being other games that fit the criteria.

Collection: Shantae
1
Attachment On April 16, 2015, WayForward's official Twitter account claimed that the title character of the series is approximately 16 years old in response to a fan's inquiry on the topic. This generated controversy from audiences due to the series' heavy emphasis on fanservice, including provocative depictions of Shantae herself, drawing concerns that the series was sexualizing a minor.

Following the 2015 tweet, a user on the Shantae subreddit claimed that they contacted WayForward staffer James Montagna about the controversy. According to the user, Montagna stated that the tweet on the official account was made by an intern without the approval of higher-ups, that the staff at WayForward did not work on the series under the pretense of Shantae being a 16-year-old, and that they seek to avoid doing anything with her that would make people feel uncomfortable. The Reddit post included a link to a screencap of the conversation with Montagna; both the post and image have since been deleted. Commenters on the post additionally speculated that the tweet was referring to the age of the series rather than the age of the character. Corroborating these claims, series creator Matt Bozon stated in a June 2015 tweet that although "I write her as a 16 year old," Shantae doesn't have an official age.

The controversy over Shantae's age would finally be settled in a 2020 AMA on Limited Run Games' Discord server. In response to another question about Shantae's age, Bozon clarified his remarks from five years prior, stating that he and the other developers consider Shantae an adult of ambiguous age throughout the series.

Plague Inc.
1
In 2019, amid a rise in popularity for anti-vaccine conspiracy theories and psuedoscience, a petition was started for Plague Inc. to implement anti-vaccine advocates, or "anti-vaxxers", as a situation that would buff your disease. Ndemic Creations, while noting that anti-vaxxers do technically exist as a smaller part of the "Science Denial" scenario along with flat Earth theorists and climate change deniers, agreed to include the movement as a solo buff for the disease, but did not have an idea for how they would work in gameplay at the time. Anti-vaxxers have not yet been added to the game, but a second buff partially referencing anti-vaxxers, "Fake News", would be added.
Just Dance: Disney Party

One of the songs featured in the game is "Everything Is Not As It Seems" by Selena Gomez, the theme song for the Disney Channel series "Wizards of Waverly Place". Due to the song's short length, however, the version that appears in the game was extended by combining both the season 1 version of the song and the season 4 version. In the Spanish version, however, only the season 4 version is used in both instances.

Just Dance 2023 Edition

2
Just Dance 2023 Edition introduces a character named Agent D during the game's version of "Toxic" by Britney Spears, which had previously appeared in Just Dance 2 with a different routine. Initially, she appears as an air hostess before revealing her true nature as a secret agent, battling a group of rival spies in order to save the plane's pilot, the P2 character from the song "Dragostea Din Tei" by O-Zone (who is later revealed to be her partner and possible love interest).

Just Dance 2024 Edition would expand upon her considerably via her appearance in another Britney Spears song, "Gimme More". Primarily set in her base of operations, it's revealed that Agent D had actually appeared in several past Britney Spears songs wearing disguises, specifically "Work Work" (the site manager), the original version of "Toxic" (the nurse), and the Extreme Mode version of "Circus" (the performer). Additionally, the background screens shown during the song display gameplay of other songs by Britney Spears (specifically "Womanizer", "Baby One More Time", "Oops!... I Did It Again", and "Scream & Shout"), though her roles in these songs are left unrevealed. This retroactively retcons the series so that Agent D has appeared as early as Just Dance 2. Additionally, the song ends with the pilot (who had appeared throughout the various missions, constantly needing help from Agent D) pressing a button on the monitor, leading to her next mission (presumably the 2023 version of "Toxic").

Currently, the only Britney Spears songs that have been featured in the Just Dance series that are not confirmed to involve Agent D are "Slumber Party" and "Till The World Ends". Additionally, it was revealed in an Instagram post that Agent D had also appeared in the standard version of "Circus", disguised as the feline tamer.

Star Fox Adventures
subdirectory_arrow_right Dinosaur Planet (Game)
1
Attachment Throughout their quests in Dinosaur Planet, Sabre and Krystal could collect spell pages that were ripped from Randorn's spellbook by General Scales. These spell pages would grant them new magical abilities, such as firing ice or fire magic, disguising themselves as SharpClaw soldiers, or opening special portal doors.

In the final Star Fox Adventures, Fox periodically acquires these magic upgrades as well, but instead of collecting spell pages, he must seek magic caves spread throughout the maps which contain shrines, where he can upgrade Krystal's staff to unlock new abilities. The majority of these upgrades were repurposed from the spells from Dinosaur Planet with two subtractions: the Mind Read spell (which let Sabre and Krystal read the thoughts/minds of NPC characters) and a spell that unleashes a fiery mine that explodes and hurts enemies (that strangely is internally referred to as "Randorn Wizard"). In their place is a new ability called "Rocket Boost" that grants Fox the ability to boost himself straight upwards with the staff to reach higher ledges, should he find the corresponding Rocket Boost Pads.

One of the spells from Dinosaur Planet, the aforementioned Disguise ability that lets the player disguise themselves as a SharpClaw, appears in Star Fox Adventures but is unlocked in a completely different manner from the other upgrades: instead of finding a magic cave, Fox, after being imprisoned within CloudRunner Fortress by General Scales, communicates with Slippy who beams him the SharpClaw Disguise, which allows Fox to sneak past the nearby SharpClaw guard to reacquire his stolen staff. In comparison, in Dinosaur Planet, Krystal was granted this ability as a spell page given to her by the imprisoned BoneHead NPC (known as "Gradabug" in Star Fox Adventures).

This actually seems to be a leftover concept from an earlier version of Star Fox Adventures, where Krystal had been removed entirely and Fox would instead gain all of the abilities from Slippy, as the cutscene sequence posted by Kevin Bayliss shows Slippy beaming Fox the projectile upgrade in Warlock Mountain (in the final game, Fox unlocks this ability, now known as "Fire Blast", after landing in ThornTail Hollow and acquiring Krystal's staff, then finding the nearby magic cave), which would become Krazoa Palace in the final game.

Just Dance 2023 Edition is notable for being the first game in the series' 14-year history to feature a story mode, titled "Enter the Danceverses". When asked during a discussion panel with Ubisoft Paris, the game's content director Franck Chapelat stated that they added the story mode because they "wanted to make a link between reality and the Just Dance universe."

Company: Nintendo
3
Despite Nintendo's current image as a family-friendly company, their initial success came from ties to organized crime. When the company was founded in 1889, hanafuda, which Nintendo manufactured cards for, was becoming increasingly controversial due to it being one of few betting games not covered by the Japanese Empire's anti-gambling laws, resulting in it becoming popular among the yakuza. While other companies were slowly exiting the hanafuda business as a result, founder Fusajiro Yamauchi pressed on, resulting in Nintendo becoming the country's most successful playing card manufacturer thanks mostly to strong sales among gang members.
Ys vs. Trails in the Sky: Alternative Saga
1
According to Toshihiro Kondo during an interview in Issue #459 of Dengeki PlayStation Magazine, Ys vs. Trails in the Sky was made because Nihon Falcom wished to make use of the PlayStation Portable's wireless ad hoc local multiplayer function, which they had been unable to work into their JRPG titles. They also felt that while both Trails and Ys were JRPGs, both series had many themes related to battle and conflict, lending them a natural transition into a fighting game.

1
There are two official Ys games released under the name "Ys IV": Mask of the Sun, made by Tonkin House, and The Dawn of Ys, made by Hudson Soft. While both games share the same setting, Hudson Soft took more creative liberties with The Dawn of Ys' presentation, resulting in two different games. Originally, The Dawn of Ys was the canonical version of Ys IV. This was changed following the release of Ys Vi: The Ark of Napishtim, wherein Mask of the Sun became the canon version. Years later, however, both versions would be rendered non-canon with the release of Ys: Memories of Celceta, which is not only also considered "Ys IV", but was actually made by series creators Nihon Falcom.

Ys IX: Monstrum Nox was originally teased as "Project N.O.X." prior to its official reveal. Toshihiro Kondo, president of Nihon Falcom, wanted the next Ys game to lean more towards the adventure genre, similar to the sections of Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana where the player plays as Dana. He also mentioned that he wanted to take the new axis of direction/movement introduced in Ys VIII to the next level (i.e. an air dash or a hook shot).
