During development, Call of Duty was codenamed MoH Killer, with MoH standing for Medal of Honor.
Castlevania: Curse of Darkness
1
In a 2005 interview with the game's producer Koji Igarashi published in the official Konami strategy guide, he chose the theme of "revenge" for this game, because the Belmonts had been seen as the good guys up to that point, and he thought it would be nice to try something other than a moralistic "good triumphs over evil" theme sometime. Another reason why was that Castlevania still had "an excellent world for telling a "dark hero" story", with Alucard being an example of this even though he's still considered somewhat good since he is fighting for the just cause of stopping Dracula. For Castlevania: Curse of Darkness however, he wanted the motivation itself to be impure, so he came up with the theme of revenge, and then he thought it could be a lot more interesting if each side was out for revenge against each other.
Bakugan: Champions of Vestroia
subdirectory_arrow_right WayForward Technologies (Company), Nintendo (Company)
3
Prior to a 2020 Nintendo Treehouse presentation, primarily intended to show off Paper Mario: The Origami King, it was announced that a new game from developer WayForward would be shown off in the presentation. Due to WayForward's reputation for platformer titles such as the Shantae series and the recent release of Cadence of Hyrule: Crypt of the NecroDancer Featuring the Legend of Zelda seemingly signifying an interest from Nintendo in indie collaborations, many fans expected the showcase to present a revival of a dormant Nintendo platforming IP such as Kid Icarus or Wario Land. In a futile attempt to temper expectations, Nintendo would vaguely clarify that the game was based on a "third party IP", redirecting speculation towards other companies' gaming IPs. When the presentation came, the game was revealed to be Bakugan: Champions of Vestroia, one of the licensed children's games that make up the vast majority of WayForward's gamography, which disappointed many, causing the Bakugan toyline to trend on Twitter and gaining the reveal trailer 3,500 dislikes against 1,500 likes on YouTube.

Um Jammer Lammy
1
Attachment The cutscene for the final stage in Um Jammer Lammy has Lammy, Ma-San, and Katy Kat all rush to the same door and apologize for being late as they got in a "lot of mess", implying that Katy and Ma-San had similar adventures to Lammy. In the American version of the game, Lammy gets to the door in her camouflage outfit from the censored island stage, and to adjust for this, Ma-San gains a Middle Eastern turban and camel, while Katy gains a military helmet and bullet strap, giving a further clue as to what adventures they could've gone on.

On July 17, 2023, Neopets was purchased from NetDragon through a management buyout deal by Dominic Law, the Neopets Chief Metaverse Officer and former Director of New Markets at both NetDragon and Cherrypicks. This lead to the formation of "World of Neopia, Inc.", a company comprised of team members from both Neopets and Neopets Metaverse, with Law serving as CEO. As part of this, it was announced that Neopets had received $4 million in investment money in early 2023, with additional funding from the management buyout equipping World of Neopia, Inc. to make "meaningful changes in pursuit of a Neopian renaissance." These changes include revamping the homepage and creating the 2024 mobile game "World of Neopets".

Rolo to the Rescue
2
Rolo to the Rescue is notorious for its depressing bad ending, seen if one completes the game without rescuing Rolo's friends from the circus:

"Congratulations, you escaped from the clutches of the evil circus master and returned home to your mother.

However the fact that you did not rescue all the friends trapped in cages remains on your conscience and you are never truly happy again."

The good ending of the game is significantly more lighthearted, showing Rolo as a grown-up father telling the story of how he rescued his friends to his son, and promising to tell him about the time he met British documentarian David Attenborough.

Who Wants to be a Millionaire? 2nd Edition on the Game Boy Color has a somewhat cynical ending roll before the credits:

Hey, congratulations
You're a millionaire!

Well you're really
a fake millionaire

But c'mon...
What did you really expect?

I mean, I can't hand out
a million dollars to every person

Alright maybe it wasn't luck,

but there's only one way

subdirectory_arrow_right Star Fox Adventures (Game), Star Fox 64 (Game)
1
Attachment Despite the English version of Melee using Star Fox Adventures' voice cast in the game's Corneria and Venom stages, the Japanese version uses all of the original Star Fox 64 voice actors. Shinobu Satouchi, Hisao Egawa, Kyoko Tongu and Tomohisa Aso all reprise their roles as Fox, Falco, Slippy and Peppy respectively. The former two's voice clips are also used for Fox and Falco as fighters even abroad.

Company: Rare
4
Attachment Contrary to popular belief, Rare's name was never "Rareware", even before the Microsoft buyout in 2002. On an old Rare Scribes post dated June 19, 2000, it was confirmed that the name "Rareware" refers to the company's products, not the company itself. It's essentially a portmanteau of "Rare" and "Software". The company itself was always internally named Rare Limited.

Franchise: Frogger
1
Frogger inspired the name of a transposon family in the fruit fly. Transposons are said to "jump" between and within genomes, which is likely why one of these genes was named after the game.
Flappy Bird
1
Flappy Bird was inspired by the act of bouncing a ping pong ball against a paddle with a string.
Slay the Princess
1
At the start of the game's development, Black Tabby Games did not think that their previous game, Scarlet Hollow, was financially successful enough to support the studio on its own through a projected five-year development timeline, leading them to pursue a second game with fewer assets and a shorter development time. Tony Howard-Arias and Abby Howard, the only two members of the company, were inspired by a game jam entry named "Claim Your FREE BitBuddy™ Today!", which had impressed Howard-Arias for how much emotional storytelling was put into a small game. This lead to them discussing a concept for a horror story confined to a few locations with a single character on screen at a time.

Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl
subdirectory_arrow_right Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 (Game)
3
Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 has been noted as having almost zero similarities to the game it is a sequel to from a gameplay perspective. Gameplay and moveset designer and community manager Thaddeus Crews would address this disparity in a short Twitter thread shortly after the sequel's launch by reassuring fans who prefer the first NASB that the sequel was not intended as a replacement for the first game:

"You know the best part about NASB1 being/feeling so different from NASB2? They're not mutually exclusive!

The first game isn't suddenly rendered irrelevant by the sequel coming out; it's entirely possible to run/enter events for the core gameplay that remains entirely its own

I've seen plenty of people that prefer the first game's gameplay, and more power to them! I'm happy that they've found something they can latch onto and enjoy; surrounding circumstances be damned"

In November 2022, the sale of Huggy Wuggy plush toys was banned and all stocks recalled by the Turkish Ministry of Trade, who stated that the toys "do not meet the requirements of the Toy Safety Regulation." The Ministry of Family and Social Services also determined that the toys "had a negative effect on the psychosocial development of children."
Flicky
2
A lot of imagery in Flicky is intended metaphorically, such as the bicycle and balloons on the opening titles representing the dreams of the chicks, and the space level representing the future that Flicky attempts to prevent the cat and lizard from taking away from the chicks. In addition, the choice to make Flicky a sparrow, but have the hatchlings she protects be chickens, was a representation of how non-parents can experience maternal instincts when seeing children in danger.

Tetris Attack
1
Attachment Yoshi's dialog in Tetris Attack was not rewritten from Lip's dialog in Panel de Pon to account for the dinosaur's more laid back, cheerful personality, resulting in him saying rather stoic fantasy hero lines such as "Together we own our world" or "We can't just be strong, we must be strongest".
