There were plans to have Sonic in the game's multiplayer mode although this idea was cut early on in development. The only thing that remains of him in the game's memory is his Japanese voice clips.

A song created by Magna-Fi, "Who I Am", was originally intended to be used as the game's main theme song. This was later changed to "I Am... All Of Me" by Crush 40. after Jun Senoue contacted him about creating a song for the game, he wrote 'Who I Am'. According to Magna-Fi frontman Mike Szuter, Jun Senoue contacted him about creating a song for the game, but rejected "Who I Am" as hevwanted to write an original song with Szuter instead, resulting in "All Hail Shadow" being the only song used in-game performed by Magna-Fi.

"Actually…….
I had originally played all the solos on the album including this one. Just weeks later CJ left the band and we got a new guitar player. I thought it would be cool to let him re-record the solos since the album hadn’t been released yet, figuring he’d be more invested in it etc.
I haven’t heard this solo since I recorded it, I don’t have any of the original versions. It is pretty badass. Wish I had the others!
As far as the origin of the song:
A friend of mine named Jun who worked for Sega contacted me about creating a song for the Shadow The Hedgehog game. I of course said yes and immediately wrote this song.
He traveled from Japan to Las Vegas and I assumed we would record his parts for the song as he’s a badass guitar player, but when he arrived he said he didn’t want this song because he wanted to write a song together!
So we wrote a song together that appears on the game soundtrack if I’m not mistaken. Not sure what that song is called.
When we started putting together the 2nd Magna-Fi record we decided to use this song as we thought it was pretty cool.
If anyone has the versions with the original solos I’d like to hear them."

According to Takashi Iizuka, the game was created to appeal to the American market.
"The Japanese Studio was to develop a Sonic game in the standard style, and the US studio was to develop something different which could contribute to the Sonic franchise. That background generated the Shadow game as he appeared from Sonic Adventure. We wanted to offer other game systems to attract a different audience from traditional Sonic fans. In the US, first and third-person shooters were popular and we decided to go with a character who could work with them." - Takashi Iizuka, Game Director.

The game plays out depending on what missions (Hero, Neutral, Dark) are completed per level. In total, despite the game having 10 endings, there are 326 possible “endings” each with their own sequence of levels, cutscenes and unique library entry for each "ark".
This decision made the game notoriously difficult and tedious to 100%. The current segmented world record for a 100% speedrun is over 181 hours long as of September 2021.
