According to developer George Fergan, there was a debate within the team on who should be the villain of the LCD handheld games: some wanted to use Mr. Crumb, while others wanted to use Mr. Crool. In the end, they decided to use both for different versions, with Mr. Crumb being used in the more powerful Tiger 99x version and Mr. Crool being used in the cheap LCD version.

Attachment The Steam version of the game replaces the original disc swap screen with a new graphic depicting the game's box art on a CD. Unusually, the render does not depict a generic CD, but rather depicts a disc made by PolyGram's CD manufacturing plant in North Carolina, as indicated by the silver disc hub and "MADE IN USA" stamp. The latter specifically dates the design to 1991-1992, when the plant slowly rebranded from Philips DuPont Optical to PolyGram Manufacturing and Distribution Centers.
Kid Klown in Night Mayor World
2
Attachment Kid Klown in Night Mayor World was originally released in Japan as Mickey Mouse III: Yume Fuusen. However, because Capcom held exclusive rights to release games based on Disney properties outside of Japan, Kemco substantially retooled the game for its international localization, replacing the myriad of Disney characters with an original cast and remaking the title screen and cutscenes from scratch.

2
Attachment The game's data contains sprites depicting Kid Klown and Princess Honey from Kid Klown in Night Mayor World, with them filling the roles of the protagonist and damsel in distress, respectively. This indicates that the game was originally devised as a Kid Klown title before being retooled around the Mickey Mouse, Garfield, and Ghostbusters franchises (depending on the region) midway through development. Ironically, Kid Klown in Night Mayor World was itself a retooled English localization of a Mickey Mouse game.

Attachment Two of the in-game magazines reference the livestreaming group Vinesauce, who previously conducted playthroughs of Hypnospace Outlaw on-stream. The first cover, Metal Masters, depicts both Vinesauce members Vinny and Joel, using pictures from their respective bands Red Vox and Scythelord; Joel's bandmate Frank also appears on the magazine cover. The second cover, NerdMaster, depicts Fren, a crude MS Paint self-portrait that Joel created to mimic the art style of QT, a lighthearted parody of PT. Both Vinny and Joel expressed flattery with the former Easter egg when they discovered it on-stream.

In an interview featured in the 149th issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly, the game's director Hideki Kamiya confirmed that Dante's personality was inspired by Cobra from the manga series Space Adventure Cobra, and Joseph Joestar from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, while also saying that no movies in particular inspired the game. He stated:

"There are lots of different kinds of media that influenced this creation. As for the main character Dante, I was strongly influenced by a Japanese comic-book character named Cobra. Cobra is a character who has no fear and talks with lots of irony and provoking looks, even as he faces immense trouble. I always loved this character and his comic. I also referred to a character in another Japanese comic Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure [also a Capcom fighting game]. His name is Joseph Joestar and he's the main hero of the comic's second chapter. He has a very similar personality to Cobra. There are no specific movies that I referred to for DMC."
Top Trumps: Doctor Who
2
Attachment The box art for Top Trumps: Doctor Who on the Nintendo DS and PlayStation 2 is misleading, with the logo of Top Trumps, a popular UK card game, being hidden in the corner of the box in place of the corporate logos, making it easy for players to not notice it and therefore mistake the game for a Doctor Who adventure game. This would be remedied for the Wii version of the game.
Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back
2
Attachment In Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back, there is a "Verbosity" slider on the audio options menu that controls how frequently Bubsy will say his one-liners. While most percentages have nicknames such as "Occasional one-liners" or "Silent bobcat", the maximum level is simply called "Bubsy", owing in a self-deprecating manner to Bubsy's reputation as a talkative character, particularly in Bubsy 3D and the 1993 cartoon pilot.

The nandb:usretc folder's "nineties" file contains a secret message from the developers.

"Enjoy this Mini,

The Simpsons Arcade Game

The Japanese version of the game has a much more dynamic scoring system. While every defeated enemy yields one point in international releases, the Japanese release has enemies vary in points, including bosses.

Adding the line "Charmy_Shutup 1" to "%AppData%\SEGA\SONICHEROES\sonic_h.ini" on the PC version will deactivate all non-subtitled speech from the characters during gameplay (including attacks and idle quotes).
Spore
1
There is a planet that shows up in Spore called Tamaran. This is a reference to the home planet of the DC Comics character Starfire.

Attachment Ian Flynn had stated on several occasions that, had he been given the go-ahead, he would have liked to incorporate Tiara and Gazebo Boobowski from the cancelled Sonix X-treme into the Archie Sonic comics, which were still ongoing at the time. However, during a Q&A from before the comic's cancellation, he confirmed that they would never appear in the comics, and could not disclose the legal reasons why.

Despite this, prior to Ian joining the comic, Tiara did make two cameo appearances: first in issue 134, where she was in the audience as Sonic and sally broke up, then in issue 138 as a waitress working at Uncle Chuck's diner (note that she has blonde hair and a purple top in this appearance).

Attachment On the box art of The Simpsons: Hit & Run, Bart wears a blue shirt with a noticeably darker shade than the blue shirts he wore in 90s-era merchandise. In the game, he wears his orange shirt from the show.

Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed
subdirectory_arrow_right Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed (Game)
2
The post-credits scene of the film Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed has Scooby present the audience with a "Game Boy Advance Secret Code" for the tie-in video game of the film, the easily-guessable "SD2". This code is promoted as working with both the GBA and PC versions of the game and is prompted to be entered at the end of each port of the game.

In the GBA version, entering the code will reveal who the main culprit is. If it is not entered, the ending cutscene will cut off before the culprit is revealed as to prevent spoilers.

In the PC version, entering the code will instead trigger a bonus Dance the Fright Away minigame between the main villain and every member of Mystery, Inc.

Attachment The character "El Chip" is an animatronic version of one of Scott Cawthon's older characters Chipper from Chipper & Sons Lumber Co.. In an interview with YouTuber Dawko, Scott was asked "Will Chipper ever return like he said he would?" and Scott answered:

"Hey, Chipper is- listen, all of these games are haunted by different spirits, right? The real spirit haunting this whole franchise is Chipper. Chipper is haunting the whole franchise. I mean, I received a box of merchandise the other day, you know, like manufacturer sampled and there's a plush toy of Chipper well, El Chip, you know but I held that plush toy and I was looking at El Chip I was thinking to myself, you know, you got merch, you got merch Chipper. You were an abysmal failure, but you found your way in this market with that goofy grin on your face."
Wheel of Fortune

Attachment The first NES rendition of Wheel of Fortune contains unused graphics of the Coca-Cola logo. This is because Coca-Cola owned Merv Griffin Enterprises, the company that created Wheel of Fortune, but sold the studio to Columbia Pictures during development of the game.
The Simpsons: Bart vs. The Space Mutants
2
In the Amiga, Amstrad, and Atari ST versions of Bart vs. the Space Mutants, Bart wears the blue shirt he had in merchandise around this period during gameplay, but on the title screen and in cutscenes, he wears the red shirt he wears in all other iterations of the game, which is closer to his orange shirt from the show.
