During the events of Cloud's flashback to Nibelheim, the player can go into Tifa's house. Tifa isn't home, but the player still has the ability to explore her entire house. If the player interacts with the wardrobe in Tifa's room, they will find a joke item called the "Orthopaedic Underwear." The Tifa listening to the story in the present will scold Cloud for joking whilst he is retelling his story.

Dr. Robotnik was created to be the opposite of Sonic, and to be the bad guy. During the development of the game, there was a growing debate between developers and environmentalists, and Robotnik was created to represent machinery and development, as apposed to Sonic, who represented the environment.

His egg shaped redesign came from Naoto Ōshima wanting to give the characters designs that were easy enough for kids to draw.

Brock: Nah, I think it was called "Macguffinite."

This is a reference to the 2009 film Avatar by James Cameron which also features a planet named Pandora and contains the valuable mineral "unobtanium".

The Color Dungeon in the DX re-release is the only location in the game where green Rupees are found. These are worth five Rupees each, while blue Rupees, the only color found elsewhere (i.e. in all locations present in the original version of the game), are worth one. This is a reversal of the values of green and blue Rupees found in most other games in the series.

3 of those names are the members of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, whilst Splinter was their teacher and Sensei.

Production of physical copies of The Black Box was cancelled, but the collection is still available for download through Steam, using a coupon found in an ATI bundle that included an ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT and a coupon for the Black Box.
