David Cage was inspired to write the story of Beyond: Two Souls after a member of his family passed away. He wanted to write a story about death, but not from the usual perspective, and treat it like a physical event that can be explained.

The Ring Tournament mode was removed from the Wii Virtual Console version of the game due to the online leaderboard being shut down. Its icon is still there, but it is skipped over in the menu. It was implemented again in the Wii U Virtual Console release.

The game actually started out under the direction of Mark Cerny (producer of the past games) exclusively for the PlayStation 2 and was initially intended to be an open world adventure. After Universal Interactive (the holder of the IP) decided to take the series multi-platform, and have Traveller's Tales develop it, the decision was made to use the more traditional linear path level design.

To promote the game in the UK, Acclaim wanted to have advertisements for it in bus shelters which would spill fake blood, which they dubbed as "Bloodvertising". The advertisements would've remained for a week spilling the blood onto the pavement and streets with cleaners hired to clear it up after the run.
