The Nintendo Switch remaster of the game adds a new five-chapter storybook similar to what the first game had, which tells the story of two identical twin sister Lumas named Mari and Lu. In the events of this story, it's revealed that Lu would grow up to become Lubba, the captain of Starship Mario, which subsequently revealed that the character had been retconned to be female. Previously, Lubba's gender had not been consistent between the original game's localizations and other appearances, a discrepancy that was not widely known up until the release of the Switch version.

In the original Japanese release of the game, Lumas were not referred to with gendered pronouns, and in a developer interview published in the original game's Japanese guidebook, producer Yoshiaki Koizumi claimed to not know what Lubba's gender was, simultaneously referring to her with male pronouns and comparing her to a grandmother or aunt (depending on the translation) to the surprise of the interviewer. The original English, French, and Italian localizations designate Lubba as male, while the original Spanish and German localizations designate Lubba as female. In all versions of the game, she is voiced by a male voice actor, Scott Burns, and both the original English and Japanese websites for the game use male pronouns. Prima's English eGuide for the original game appears to avoid using pronouns for Lubba entirely.

This confusion extended to Lubba's trophy description in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, in which the English release calls Lubba male, but the Japanese release does so while comparing the character to "an older lady from a working-class neighborhood."

The final trailer was come and gone, and still nothing on if Lubba will be in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and who she's to be voiced by, her inclusion overall can confirm if that reference to the first Mario movie was intentional in terms of Mari. What I'm saying is that the new storybook was added into the Switch version of Super Mario Galaxy 2 either to promote The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, or it was something that didn't get to be in the Wii original due to time constraints, although I think it was always planned to re-release Super Mario Galaxy 2 on the Switch even before The Super Mario Galaxy Movie was even greenlit, hence the game not being included in Super Mario 3D All Stars, they never would've eventually cleared things up with Lubba's gender if it had.

As we speak I am awaiting news on if Lubba is to be in the Super Mario Galaxy Movie, along with her voice actor's gender, that might to interesting to add in.

Never thought to mention the credits, and there had been nothing mentioning the manual when it came to linked sources, but thanks for the additional sources about this. Right now it remains uncertain on if it really was Scott Burns voicing Lubba to the point of the gender confusion, since I don't think he ever actually confirmed it, previously it was believed to be Dex Manley due to his name mentioned in the credits, but if it's true on Scott Burns based on his name being listed, then who knows how he was able to return after parting from the role of Bowser to voice a different character altogether.

If only Lubba had made more appearances after Super Mario Galaxy 2, would've been confirmed to be a she before we had these additional storybook chapters. More particularly this is to do with Mario Spinoffs, none of them had Lubba be playable, though they did feature a generic yellow Luma in some of them.
