While the Mario version of the Figure Skating Spectacular dream event based on Super Mario 3D Land contains brand new arrangements of songs from that game (as well as the Ground theme from Super Mario Bros. and the Fortress Boss theme from Super Mario Bros. 3), the Sonic version of the dream event based on Sonic Colors instead uses the original soundtrack recordings from that game, albeit edited together to form a medley fitting the event.

According to series producer Lee Cocker, no Nintendo 3DS version of the game was ever planned, making it the first Mario & Sonic game to not have an accompanying handheld version.

This is the first Mario & Sonic game to be published by Nintendo outside of Japan and South Korea rather than Sega, who published the first three games.
