Sid Meier's Civilization

Attachment In 2012, TV Tropes user Tunafish edited the site's page for the Civilization series to claim that Gandhi can become the most aggressive character in the original game due to a rollover error. World leaders' aggression levels drop by two points upon adopting democracy; because Gandhi's aggression is set to 1, the lowest possible value, the pacification allegedly lowers it to -1, which defaults to 255, the highest possible value.

Despite the edit not providing any evidence, the claim nonetheless circulated online in subsequent years. Because leaders will vehemently pursue a nuclear weapons policy when their aggression is high enough, the claim spawned the "Nuclear Gandhi" meme among Civilization fans, poking fun at the apparent dissonance between the real Gandhi's pacifism and his fictional counterpart's apocalyptic jingoism. A KnowYourMeme page on the memes further distorted the rumors by claiming that the bug first appeared in Civilization II rather than the first game; as of March 2024, the page now acknowledges that the rumors are false.

The Nuclear Gandhi claim was eventually debunked by series creator Sid Meier in his 2020 autobiography, Sid Meier's Memoir!: A Life in Computer Games. In the book, Meier revealed that Civilization and Civilization II are respectively programmed in C and C++, which are immune to the kinds of rollover errors that the urban legend describes. Consequently, Gandhi's aggression level remains at 1 after the adoption of democracy. Nevertheless, Meier admitted that he found the memes surrounding the urban legend funny.

In the basement of the Helicarrier, a character will ask the player to help them clear out some snakes, saying,

Snakes. Why'd it have to be snakes? Hate them! How'd they even get on board? Director Fury told me specifically to "get these snakes off this god-darn Helicarrier." I may be paraphrasing slightly. Anyways, can you help me out?

S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Nick Fury's appearance in the Marvel Ultimate line of comic books was based on Samuel L. Jackson, and he has played the role in a number of Marvel movies. Samuel L. Jackson also played the part of Neville Flynn, an FBI agent in the film "Snakes on a Plane", in which he exclaims, "That is it! I have had it with these mother-fucking snakes, on this mother-fucking plane!"
The opening line is also likely a reference to Indiana Jones, with the same line appearing in the 1981 movie, Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Sir Daniel Fortesque's voice was originally performed by the game's lead designer, Jason Wilson, in MediEvil, after the developers auditioned several actors but could not find anyone they were happy with. In the end, Wilson stepped in to do the voice himself, allegedly reading the lines through gritted teeth while wearing a bucket on his head to get the right effect.

In MediEvil 2, Fortesque was played by British voice actor Marc Silk, with Jason Wilson reprising the role in the PSP reimagining MediEvil: Resurrection. French actor Stephane Cornicard portrayed Dan in his appearance in Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale, who Wilson criticized as sounding "a little too much like the Swedish Chef for my liking".

In April 2000, José Rabadán, a teenager from Murcia (Spain) killed both of his parents and his sister with a katana. The media accused Final Fantasy VIII of inducing Jos to do it, with one magazine stating, "he was just imitating his hero, Squall" who, in a moment of the story thinks that he must kill Spoiler: someone close to him: Rinoa.

However, José Rabadán hadn't finished the game, nor even reached the point in which this event occurs, proving the article to be jumping to conclusions. José was arrested and spent eight years in jail. He has since been known by the nickname of "El asesino de la Katana" (The Katana Killer).
