In an interview featured in the Japan-exclusive Shogakukan Wonder Life Special guidebook for The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, co-director Takashi Tezuka revealed that Chain Chomps were originally conceived for The Legend of Zelda series under the name "BowWow", but a developer came across old concept art and decided to implement them in Super Mario Bros. 3. A Chain Chomp named BowWow would later appear in The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening.

Often wondered to this day on why what looks like Chain Chomps would be in Link's Awakening, but what this submission explains might be the answer to that.
