Shigeru Miyamoto considered making Princess Peach a playable character, like in Super Mario Bros. 2, instead of the damsel in distress. He eventually decided against it because of how difficult it would have been to animate her dress, and instead had two Toads. They were eventually able to manage having Peach being playable in mainline games with Super Mario 3D World, Super Mario Run and Super Mario Bros. Wonder.
