During development, the game was designed as a new IP, but Square Enix felt that the title would work well if it were a part of the Mario series. After contact was made, Nintendo gave permission for the Mario series to be used for the game.

2 of the characters have baller names referencing other games. Moogle's baller name is "Game & Watch Me" referencing Game & Watch, and Mario's baller name is "The Jumpman", referencing Mario's original name in Donkey Kong.
