Makoto Wada has said that Mario's appearance as the game's referee was never intended by the rest of the development team. He placed the character in the place of the referee without approval from higher up in the company, and when it came time for final testing, no one said anything about removing him and he was left in.

There is a parasitic fungus called Ophiocordyceps unilateralis, which is known for taking over an ant's mind and controlling its motor skills, basically making it a zombie. In The Last of Us, a fungus takes over most of humanity's minds, and turns them into zombies.

Hidden in the files are two tracks named batman_song.ogg and song_driving.ogg. When played in a media player, they are actually songs from the anime Cowboy Bebop, being "Spy" and "Rush" respectively. According to the game composer, Jake Kaufman, these were place-holder tracks.

There are various weapons that were cut from the final game but can still be found in the game files, these include: FAMAS, M1014, MK12 SPR, MP5K, Vector, AUG, F2000, W1200, WA2000, STG44 G3, M93 Raffica, Remington 870, Lee-enfield, MG4, TAR-21 and Scar-H. All of these weapons (Besides the MK12 SPR) are from previous Call of Duty titles and were likely removed to make way for new weapons.

Several sections of Tatooine were cut out due to time constraints. The Star Map was originally to be located in a Sarlacc pit instead of a Krayt Dragon's lair. Players would have to find the sarlacc in a cave complex and then enter it without getting eaten. Later the player could become a messiah of the Sandpeople and lead them to stand up against Czerka.

The game started out as a remake of an early Sierra game called "Softporn Adventures." It had no protagonist, little or no plot, almost no text, and understood almost none of the commands the player input. Al Lowe is quoted in saying "it's so behind the times it might as well be wearing a leisure suit!" This gave him the idea of creating the main character.

Attachment Early screenshots showed that when you captured an enemy and "tortured" them, they appear strapped to a medieval torture device known as a wooden horse. This device was almost exclusively used against women, and forced the victim to sit on a pointed wooden structure with their entire body weight, putting their full weight onto their vulva. This was later changed into a cat. This was likely done to lower the CERO (the Japanese version of the ESRB) rating of the game.
