Sonic X-treme
1
The version of Sonic X-Treme we saw in advertisements was scrapped early in development. The slow and unsatisfactory progress in porting the PC engine code to the Sega Saturn caused arguments, and resulted in the executives intervening and bringing in a third party company, POV, to take over programming duties. From then on, three parties worked on the programming separately: one on the boss stages and two on the main game. On the original programmers' side, good progress was made. But POV had no such luck. Due to a poor presentation made by POV, the President of Sega Japan had already angrily left the building when the team of original main-game programmers arrived. In reaction to the poor presentation, the president demanded that the rest of the game be made like the boss engine, which caused further complications and ultimately the cancellation of the game.
Fallout: New Vegas
1
Attachment Ulysses was originally going to be a companion, but was cut from the final version of the game and then put back in for the Lonesome Road DLC as the main antagonist.

This would have made him a Legion-sympathetic companion and would help explain Legion backstory elements, as there wasn't much Legion support from any of the other companions. He would have also reacted strongly to NCR/Legion conflict and the player's role in it, acting as a sounding board when possible.
Revolution X
1
Revolution X was originally going to be a Jurassic Park game, however when SEGA acquired the rights instead, the game was changed to revolve around the band Aerosmith.
Super Mario Bros. 2
subdirectory_arrow_right Yume Koujou: Doki-doki Panic (Game)
1
Contrary to popular belief, there is evidence suggesting that Super Mario Bros. 2 was the true sequel to Super Mario Bros. Some time after the original game's completion, Nintendo's Kyoto-based R&D division began working on a vertical-scrolling Mario engine. It became clear early on that a vertical-scrolling game couldn't offer the same quality of platforming as the original Super Mario Bros. Shigeru Miyamoto then stepped in and added horizontally scrolling aspects to the game.

The prototype engine was originally designed around carrying, throwing, and piling up items and featured 2-player cooperative play, which even included the ability to throw other players to hard-to-reach places to progress further in the game. A deal with Fuji Television was struck during development to promote their 1987 Japanese festival the Communication Carnival Yume Kōjō '87 (translated to English as "Dream Factory '87"), and the prototype eventually became Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic. Although cooperative play was dropped, the concepts of vertical scrolling and tossing around items to defeat enemies was incorporated into Doki Doki Panic, and in turn Super Mario Bros. 2. All of this supports the thought that Super Mario Bros. 2 was, in fact, the true sequel.

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow
1
The secret bonus Julius mode pays homage to Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse. The party members are Julius Belmont (descendant of Trevor Belmont), Yoko Belnades (descendant of Sypha Belnades), and Genya Arikado in his Alucard form. While there is no one that plays like Grant D'nasty in this mode, looking through the game's ROM reveals dialog that suggest Hammer was going take his role.
Left 4 Dead
1
In the Left 4 Dead (left4dead) and Left 4 Dead 2 (left4dead2 and left4dead2_dlc3) sound files, there are some sounds similiar to a dog. All of them seem to have been cut, but they still exist in the game files. The attack sounds for "zombiedog" were recycled for the Hunter when he'd attack with his claws. This could explain why the Hunter yelps like a dog when he is killed. According to some of the Church Guy's "combatcolor" sound files, the "dog" sounds seem to have been re-made for when he would turn into a Hunter.
Donkey Kong 3
1
Attachment Brand new sprites of Junior can be found in the game's data, suggesting he was supposed to appear in the game.
Mario Kart 8
1
Instead of using the antigravity mechanic in Mario Kart 8, the team originally planned to have drills on the karts so players could travel through the earth.

"In "7" we had the glider, and submersion in water, and so when we were also thinking about new ideas for "8," and we thought, "well, since we did all that, why not put a drill on the karts, and have them go through the earth somehow, subterranean racing." But, we kind of thought that's not such an interesting idea, and after that we hit upon the antigravity mechanic." - Hideki Konno
Resident Evil 3: Nemesis
1
At its early concepts Biohazard 3: Last Escape was going to have a mode where you could play as a zombified Brad Vickers (cut due to production costs) and Jill would have crossed paths with Leon, Ada and William during the story (cut due to continuity problems).
Resident Evil 3: Nemesis
1
Resident Evil 3 was originally planned to star the masked mercenary, HUNK, in a luxury cruiser trying to locate a G-virus sample. During this point, the eventual game was a separate project titled "Biohazard: Gaiden", not to be confused with the GBC title "Resident Evil Gaiden", and designed as a spin-off. Due to an issue with the original project's development time, this "Gaiden" was changed into the actual sequel and given the name "Biohazard 3: Last Escape" while the other project was scrapped.
Luigi's Mansion
1
Attachment There's an unused model of Mario in the game's data. Mario is stretched to Luigi's proportions and is equipped with the back straps for the Poltergust 3000. The geometry of the model is simpler than Mario's final in-game model, containing fewer polygons. Although its true purpose is unknown, it could've been from an unused multiplayer mechanic requiring both Mario and Luigi. The model was stretched out, presumably to fit Luigi's skeleton so that Luigi's animations could be used on the model. The model also uses Luigi's gloves, presumably to make his animations handling the Poltergust 3000 more accurate.
Donkey Kong Country
1
Attachment The Kremlings in Donkey Kong Country were originally created for another game in development at the time, but Rareware repurposed them for DKC and they seemed to fit perfectly.
Guitar Hero II
1
In the demo version of Guitar Hero II, the cover song for You Really Got Me includes the lyric where the singer says "Oh no no!" right before the guitar solo. For the retail version of Guitar Hero II, the "Oh no no!" was removed.
Silent Hill 4: The Room
2
Attachment This is one of the few Silent Hill games to not include a UFO ending. A Channeling Stone can be found in the game's data, suggesting that a UFO ending was planned but was later dropped.
Silent Hill: Shattered Memories
1
According to a pitch book that Climax Studios gave away, the original name for the game was "Silent Hill: Cold Heart" and it was going to have a female main character.
Super Mario 64
subdirectory_arrow_right Super Mario 64 2 (Game)
1
Attachment In the December 1997 issue of The64Dream, Miyamoto stated that Super Mario 64 2 would have made Luigi a full part of the game, and that if he was really popular, then the box for Super Mario 64 2 would be green.
Animal Crossing: New Leaf
1
A rejected idea in New Leaf was to allow the player to pan for gold.
Grand Theft Auto III
1
Children and elderly people with walkers were planned for the game, but were cut.
Grand Theft Auto III
1
Claude could originally run with the baseball bat.
Grand Theft Auto III
