Mario Kart: Super Circuit is the first game in the series to feature a Lightning Cup. It is also the only Lightning Cup with original stages, as from Mario Kart DS until Mario Kart 8, it only featured stages from previous Mario Kart games, while in Mario Kart World it features both new and old stages.

I get that Mushroom, Flower and Star all come from items Mario has had in every 2D adventure sans Super Mario Bros. 2 and Super Mario Run, but where could Lightning have come from when deciding on a 5th cup to accommodate 20 GBA tracks?
