Just as the main bosses of the game represent the Seven Deadly Sins, major locations of the game have a symbolic or ironic connection with the demon that is plaguing them.

Diligence and Industen (Industrious) were once the hardest of workers, but then became so weak that they even lost the will to live.

The queen of Devote, instead of devoting herself to others, was so incredibly jealous of all other beautiful things that she sank her kingdom under the sea.

Temponia and Modero (Temperance and Moderation) once had extravagant amounts of food, but then starved.

The former friendly nations of Favorian and Justania (Favor and Justice) were engaged in a bloody war brought on by the demon Fury. The demon filled the Justanian king's heart with wrath.

The king of Lovaous (Love) was plagued by the demon Deception in his dreams, which filled his mind with thoughts of lust.

The king of Stormrook, overcome by greed, takes all of his citizens' money and sends them to a prison called Gratis, which means "for free", a play on words both for greed and for a prison.

Humbleton (Humble), a highly civilized, technologically advanced nation with no faith in the master, enacted a plan to build a tower (Tower of Souls/Babel) to reach the heavens and become Masters themselves.
Anarchy Reigns

Attachment The enemy "Cybrid Joe" is a nod to an enemy from God Hand "Tiger Joe". Outside of having similar names, they both have identical animations and move sets. Many of the developers at Platinum Games came from Clover Studio, who made God Hand.
Franchise: Crash Bandicoot
1
According to Andy Gavin, the creator of Crash Bandicoot, Dr. Neo Cortex is based on Brain from Pinky and the Brain.

"I remember it clearly. The four of us were eating at this mediocre Italian near Universal and I had this idea of an evil genius villain with a big head. Obviously brainy cartoon villains have big heads. He was all about his attitude and his minions. Video games need lots of minions. Jason had become very fond of Pinky and the Brain and we imagined a more malevolent Brain with minions like the weasels in Who Framed Roger Rabbit. A villain, all full of himself, unable to conceive of ever doing anything the simple way, but constantly (in his eyes) betrayed by the incompetence of his henchmen.

I put on my silly villain voice and intoned, "If you had three neurons between you, you couldn't make a triangle!" With this attitude, his name, Doctor Neo Cortex, popped instantly into our heads."
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
1
Twilight Princess was originally going to be a sequel to The Wind Waker. A presentation by director Eiji Aonuma contained a reference to the working title The Wind Waker 2 and it was said to use a similar graphical style. Nintendo of America told Aonuma that North American sales of The Wind Waker were sluggish because the cartoon appearance created the impression that the game was designed for a young audience. Concerned that the sequel would have the same problem, Aonuma expressed to Shigeru Miyamoto that he wanted to create a realistic Zelda game that would appeal to the North American market.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl

In the Subspace Emissary mode, There is a cutscene where Ridley grabs Samus and drags her along the wall. He only lets go when Pikachu Zaps him with a Thunder bolt. This cut scene seems to have influenced a similar scene in Metriod: Other M.

Attachment Tofu from the secret game mode Tofu Survivor was originally created as a means to test the game's collision detection during development. He later got his own mode as a parody of HUNK's 4th Survivor.
Final Fantasy V
1
Attachment Exdeath's tree form resembles the treasured Yggdrasil of Norse mythology, which is often referred to as the beam that supports the universe.
Mega Man Zero 4
1
The main bosses of the game, the Einherjar Eight Warriors, are all based on mythological creatures. These include a fairy, a Mandragora, a Minotaur, a cockatrice, a Pegasus, a Kraken, the Norse Fenrir and the Black Tortise Genbu.

Another mythological connection is that Einherjar in Norse myth are warriors brought to Valhalla to await Ragnarok, when they would join in an immense battle. In Mega Man Zero 4, the Einherjar are engaging in an operation called Ragnarok to eliminate the human settlement Zero aims to protect.
Secret of Evermore
1
Attachment In the starting town of Podunk, a "Doughead Software" store can be seen in the background. This appears to be a nod to both Egghead Software, a computer software retail company from 1984-2001, as well as the executive producer (and Lode Runner creator) Doug Smith.

Doug Smith may also be credited with the conception of Secret of Evermore, according to lead programmer Brian Fehdrau, who states that Squaresoft hired Smith based on his suggestion for an RPG with an "American-motif." Squaresoft liked this idea, and told the development team to make "a game like [Secret of Mana] with western themes."
Splatterhouse

Attachment In the TurboGrafx-16 version of the game, the Terror Mask is red instead of White. This change was because the mask looked like a hockey mask and it made Rick look like Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th.
Jet Force Gemini
1
According to the Lead Programmer, Paul Mountain, the entire game took elements from different games. It had Super Mario 64's open world and free-roaming nature for scale, Quake-style "attack and cover" mechanics, and Super Metriod's collecting and upgrading of weapons.
Secret of Evermore
1
Originally, the title for "Secret of Evermore" was simply, "Evermore." Squaresoft decided to add "Secret of" only a month before the game shipped, hoping that title familiarity with the already released "Secret of Mana" would benefit sales.
Pocky & Rocky
1
Throughout the first two levels, the Nopino are based on Yokai from Japanese folklore, including monsters such as Tengu, Kappa, Tsukumogami, as well as others. However, the Gorgonzola Goblins revealed at the end of Stage 2 and beyond have a more Western feel, mainly European and some Middle Eastern. These include pirates, knights, bishops, a Vampire, a Harpy (Exclusive to the Japanese Version), a Kraken, and a Genie.
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening

Attachment Mr. Write is likely based on an advisor in the original SimCity, who had a nearly-identical appearance and name, Dr. Wright. The theme that plays in Mr. Write's house is also from the SNES version of SimCity, where it serves as Dr. Wright's theme.
Doom II: Hell on Earth
1
According to Bobby Prince, the Arch-vile is an evil healer, who blasts his way through demons, but then reanimates all of them. The Dual Personality gave him the idea of giving it an evil laugh.

The laugh itself is of a young girl saying "why" with the pitched shifted down, and mixed with other sound. This was done as the Arch-vile doesn't understand why anyone would want to kill him as he sees himself as only doing good for his fellow demon.
Franchise: Dead or Alive
1
The series gets it's name from a wager that the lead programer, Tomonobu Itagaki, made with the head of Tecmo. Itagaki assured the president he would create a video game that would garner a competent fan base. He named the series "Dead or Alive" to demonstrate that the company's future rested on the game's success.
Pokémon FireRed Version
subdirectory_arrow_right Pokémon LeafGreen Version (Game)
1
The reason that LeafGreen is the intentional release instead of WaterBlue is that Junichi Masuda, the game director, wanted an icon of peace (which is what leaf is said to represent) instead of an icon that conflicts with the image of fire used by the other game.
