Attachment All of the religious symbolism in the game was either replaced (such as the cross boss and the grave at the end of the game) or removed (such as the alter in the church). Strangely, even though the alter was removed and the church was turned into a long hallway, the church music still plays, and the candles from the alter are now floating.

Attachment In Japan, the game was titled "Hitler no Fukkatsu: Top Secret" which translates to "The Resurrection of Hitler: Top Secret". The western release was drastically altered to not feature any mention of Nazism with the enemy changed to the "Badds". The leader of the enemy's name was changed from Weizmann to Killt and the final boss who was Hitler revived was named Master-D, however his appearance still remains the same.

In the French and German releases of the game, the character of Nimdok and his chapter as a whole were removed, because the chapter was based around a Nazi concentration camp. For nearly 30 years, it was rumored that the removal of Nimdok's chapter made the best ending unattainable. However, this was eventually disproven in 2023, when YouTube user StarlightPumpkins uploaded a video laying the rumor to rest by successfully achieving the best ending in the French release.

In the Japanese and non-English European versions of the game, Vivian is portrayed as in some way gender non-conforming, with the original Japanese script, like a lot of pop culture addressing gender identity at the time, being ambiguous as to whether Vivian is a transgender woman being referred to in an unflattering light, or a cisgender male crossdresser. A rough translation of the Japanese text for Vivian as a party member reads:

"カゲ三人組の一人だった　オンナのコのようで　ホントは　オトコのコ"
"One of the shadow group, Vivian appears to be a girl but is really a boy."

This was changed in the English localization to make Vivian a cisgender woman with "a bit of an inferiority complex." The Italian version of the game instead appears to portray Vivian as a proud transgender woman:

Vivian: "We'll defeat that Mario guy! 'Cause we are 'The three shadow sisters'!"
Marilyn: "How can you define us as 'The three shadow sisters'? You are a man! A MAN!"
Vivian: "That’s true, you are two sisters… But I am a woman too now, and I'm proud to have turned into a woman!"
Marilyn: "Hmph. And you surely think you are more beautiful than we are, huh? You deserve a punishment for that!"

The GTS has a filter to prevent Pokémon with inappropriate nicknames from being traded. However this prevented Pokémon, such as Cofagrigus, from being traded without nicknaming it because their name contains a keyword. This has been mostly fixed but some Pokémon, such as Nosepass, are still unable to be traded without a nickname.

Because the storyline and graphic FMVs were more horrifying than any video game that had yet been released, head developer Kenji Eno resorted to a trick in order to get D published.

The game was originally developed with no storyline, and Eno kept the story sequences a secret even from the other members of WARP. When the game was finished, he submitted a 'clean' version (i.e. without the violent and disturbing story content of the complete version) for approval.

He deliberately submitted the master disc late, knowing that part of the penalty was that he would have to deliver it by hand to the manufacturers in the USA. While on the plane, he switched the phony 'clean' discs with the finalized discs, thus completely bypassing all censorship.

Attachment Despite being an E-rated game, the intro got away with mild swearing. Near the end of the song, the last line during Chunky Kong's portion of the song says, "But this kong's one hell of a guy". The game was developed by Rare, a British company, and in Great Britain the word isn't considered offensive. In later versions of the song the word is replaced with "heck".

Attachment Xigbar's weapon was changed for the American release. In the Japanese version, he carried a weapon that resembled a sniper rifle and his scope included a cross-hair while zoomed in. In the American release, his weapon was changed to look less like an actual rifle. His weapon was split into two blades, and his scope was changed to include a three circles design instead of a cross-hair. This is one example of many changes from the Japanese version.

Attachment The main character of the game, Tamagon, appeared as a trophy in the Japanese version of Super Smash Bros. Melee. Tamagon was removed in the American version of the game but the trophy can still be found with Action Replay, complete with a translated description. Stranger still, the Tamagon trophy was removed outright from the European version of the game and cannot even be found with a cheat device, despite the fact that Devil World was released in European countries.
