John Carpenter, director of The Thing film, oversaw the entire production of the game to make sure that the game sequel lived up to the movie's lore. He also makes an uncredited voice cameo in the form of a character named Dr. Faraday.

The game is more aptly named "Yuusei Kara no Buutai X: Episode II" in Japan, as to emphasize the fact that it is a sequel to the movie and not an adaptation.

Computer Artworks, the developer of the game, were in the process of developing a sequel, The Thing 2. However, the conception was cut short due to the company shutting down.
