In 1993, Ubisoft announced that they had licensed John Madden Football '93 from Electronic Arts, and were developing versions of the game for the Nintendo Entertainment System and Game Boy. The magazine Game Informer would preview the NES version via a non-interactive demo, which differed from the 16-bit version by having a top-down perspective, but the ports ultimately never released.

A spinning EASN logo appeared in early builds of the game, though this was changed to a single spinning EA Sports logo instead. This was because of a lawsuit between ESPN and EA, whose fictional EASN branding sounded similar to ESPN.
