During the development of Star Fox, Shigeru Miyamoto began conceiving a 3D Mario game using the SNES' Super FX chip, but contrary to popular belief, a build using the chip was never developed. According to Argonaut Software programmer Dylan Cuthbert, the Super FX chip was codenamed "Super Mario FX" during its development, and the original line of chips have the name "MARIO CHIP" printed on them, which is possibly where this misconception stems from.
