Animal Crossing
1
Attachment Animal Crossing is only one of four versions of the same game. Three of which were only released in Japan. The first version was for the Nintendo 64, entitled "Dobutsu no Mori", which translates to "Animal Forest". The second version, "Dobutsu no Mori +", was an enhanced remake of the original game, released on the Gamecube. This was the version that would be localized as Animal Crossing in the United States. The final version, "Dobutsu no Mori e+", was a second enhanced remake released on the Gamecube. There was also an unreleased sequel to "Animal Crossing", tentatively entitled "Animal Crossing 2".
Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
1
Zelda II: The Adventure of Link is the only game in the The Legend of Zelda series, excluding spin-offs, without the word "The Legend of-" in the title. It is also the only numerical sequel (marked by the roman numeral "II") in the Zelda franchise.

However, in the Japanese release, the game does have the prefix of "The Legend of".
Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
1
Attachment Zelda II marks one of the few instances where Link has lines in a canonical game. He says "I found a mirror under the table."

In the Japanese release, this isn't the case, and it is simply a generic message stating that Link found the mirror, rather than him stating it.
Digimon World
1
Attachment The PAL cover features a Gomamon (second from right), but they do not appear anywhere in the game. Tentomon (far right) are found in Beetle Land, but cannot be raised.
Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
1
In the Japanese version of Saria Town, one of the graves in the town reads "The Hero Loto rests here." This is a reference to the Dragon Quest hero.

The first Final Fantasy game had a similar grave in the town of Elfheim. The grave reads "Here Lies Link".
Mass Effect
1
Mass Effect was banned in Singapore due to a scene where it's possible for Female Shepard to have sex with the Female Asari Sha'ira. The ban was later lifted, however it was given an "M18" classification, making it the first video game in Singapore to ever receive a rating.

Note: According to the Galactic Codex: Essentials Edition 2183, while Asari have only one gender, they are not asexual like single-celled life; all Asari are sexually female.
Franchise: Animal Crossing
1
Attachment Animal Crossing started out as a Nintendo 64 game called Dōbutsu no Mori (Animal Forest) exclusive for Japan. There is a fish called Herabuna that is exclusive to Animal Forest.
Super Mario All-Stars
1
Attachment Right before the "lights" come on and illuminate the title screen, the crowd of Mario characters can be heard talking. Even though you can't really make out any words, the crowd chatter sound clip was changed for the U.S. version.
Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest
1
Attachment There is a scrapped Kremling character which has been dubbed by fans as "Mr. X". He appeared in Issue 76 of Nintendo Power but is nowhere in the game. He appears in the German instruction booklet where it reads, "Kennt ihn oder hat ihn irgendwo schon einmal gesehen", which translates into, "No one knows him or has seen him anywhere before."
Contra: Hard Corps
1
Attachment Contra: Hard Corps has significant differences between the Japanese, American, and European versions. In the Japanese version the characters all have a lifebar, and can be hit three times. This version also has unlimited continues unlike the American and European (PAL) version. The American and European version does not have a lifebar; a single bullet will take a life. This makes the American and European version significantly more challenging.

The European version also has significant censorship. The game is called Probotector and all the characters in the game are robots. Furthermore the plot and cut-scenes are different. The antagonists are aliens and the Alien Cell's name was changed to the "X-Drive".
Kirby's Dream Land 2
1
Attachment In the Japanese version of the game, the character Chao from the Japan-only game, Famicom Mukashibanashi: Yūyūki (ふぁみこんむかし話 遊遊記) can be found in a bag that is guarded by a mid-boss. She can only be found in the bag if the player already has the corresponding animal friend. She has a very low chance of showing up, and when she does, she gives you an extra life and adds 1% to the game's completion, making it necessary to find her to get 100% completion. She is replaced by Gooey in the international versions.
Super Mario Bros. 2
subdirectory_arrow_right Yume Koujou: Doki-doki Panic (Game)
3
Attachment Super Mario Bros. 2 was technically not a unique Mario game, but rather an enhanced port of a Japanese game called "Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic", translated to English as "Dream Factory: Heart-Pounding Panic". The "Dream Factory" part of the name refers to an expensive 1987 Japanese expo organized by Fuji Television called the Communication Carnival Yume Kōjō '87 that showcased various upcoming programs. As part of an ongoing license cooperation between Nintendo and Fuji, the festival's four main mascots became the playable characters in the game, while all other characters were created by Nintendo. It was ported and released in North America with Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool and Toad replacing the mascots. This was released in place of the Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2 (known in the US as Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels) because Nintendo of America considered it to be too difficult and too similar to the first Super Mario Bros. to compete with rapidly advancing games from rival companies.

Portal 2
1
In the Spanish version of Portal 2, at the end of chapter 5, when Wheatley takes over GLaDOS' body, Wheatley tries to show his intelligence to Chell by using the translator and in doing so, winds up saying, "It seems that you are using this translation too incorrectly. Please check the manual."
Company: Nintendo
1
Attachment Nintendo released one console to a Chinese-only market. It is called the iQue and is based on the Nintendo 64, though there is no physical console as it is completely contained in the controller. A total of 14 games exist for it which are downloaded from the iQue Games Depot directly to a 64 MB flash card which is connected to the controller via a cartridge.
Final Fantasy Legend II
1
Attachment In the US release of the game, Nintendo's censorship guidelines meant that a band of opium smugglers became banana smugglers instead.
Kingdom Hearts II
1
Attachment Xigbar's weapon was changed for the American release. In the Japanese version, he carried a weapon that resembled a sniper rifle and his scope included a cross-hair while zoomed in. In the American release, his weapon was changed to look less like an actual rifle. His weapon was split into two blades, and his scope was changed to include a three circles design instead of a cross-hair. This is one example of many changes from the Japanese version.
Pokémon Colosseum
1
Attachment Rui had her shirt and skirt lengthened for the English versions of the game. This was to cover her navel and make her outfit more family friendly.
Ninja Gaiden Shadow
1
Ninja Gaiden Shadow, "Shadow Warriors" in Europe and Australia, for the Gameboy was not originally planned to be a Ninja Gaiden game. The game was actually going to be a port of the NES game "Shadow of the Ninja" developed and published by Natsume, but Tecmo bought the rights to the game and was reworked to be a Ninja Gaiden prequel.
Gex: Enter the Gecko
1
In the American release of the game, Gex is voiced by comedian Dana Gould. However in the European release of the game, Gould's voice was replaced by that of English actor Leslie Phillips, who provided a very different, more cultured and refined variation of the character.
