Attachment According to the Willy the Wombat production bible, Dr. Neo Cortex was born in the circus and physically abused by clowns. Since then, anything that involves clowns makes Cortex enraged.

In games like Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled and Crash Team Rumble, Cortex has an unlockable skin in which he is dressed up like a clown. Humorously in Nitro-Fueled, Cortex’s victory animation features him with a dismal glare.

Within the game is a series of hidden developer messages. The first one, which reads "PRESS CTRL-Z DURING THE CARTOONS," is accessible by enabling joystick mode and pressing button 1 after navigating the joystick cursor to the bottom-left of the title screen. If the player complies with the message and presses Ctrl-Z during the game's cutscenes, they'll be given different fragments of a cipher message; piecing them together and decoding them reveals the sentence "ENTER THREE LETTER CODE WHEN YOU RETIRE." Likewise, pressing Ctrl-Z while the game displays the cipher fragments brings up the phrase "DOUBLE HELIX," alluding to the shape of a DNA molecule. Accordingly, if the player types "DNA" on the retirement screen that appears after beating the game, they will receive a congratulatory message from programmer Robert Cook.

The complicated nature of this Easter egg resulted in it going undiscovered until 2016, when game preservationist 4a.m. tried cracking the ROM's atypically complex antipiracy protections while attempting to preserve as many Apple II games online as possible. Cook sent 4a.m. a congratulatory message on Twitter after discovering the secret, jokingly stating that "I assumed it would take a thousand, but you solved it in a mere 33 years."

Sonic Superstars
2
Attachment In the promotional comic "Sonic Superstars: Fang's Big Break", Dr. Eggman refers to Fang by various different names before coming to his current name of "Fang the Hunter". Each of the names mentioned is a reference to a name Fang was given in the past Sonic titles:

• "Nack the Weasel" was Fang's original name in Western regions, as well as the Sonic comics published by Fleetway and Archie.
• "Jet the Jerboa" is a reference to the name under which Fang was first revealed in Western regions (the article where Sonic the Hedgehog: Triple Trouble was first previewed in the Mean Machines Sega article, when it was called "Sonic Chaos 2", with Fang originally being named "Jet the Sniper").
• "Fang the Sniper" was Fang's original name in Japanese regions, and would later be carried over into the West via Sonic the Fighters.

The comic itself provides an in-universe explanation for the numerous name changes: being a wanted criminal, Fang has had to constantly change his name in order to keep the authorities off his toes.

The game features an unused sixth hidden tape called "Herd of Mouth with Wooly the Sheep" that can only be accessed by exploiting the game. However, the tape is entirely comprised of Wooly sitting at a table while occasionally making minor gestures for ten minutes, suggesting that the tape was added purely to mess with exploiters.
God of War

There is a special gauntlet in the game called "The Shattered Gauntlet of Ages" which can be equipped with 6 different stone runes. This is a reference to the Infinity Gauntlet, an item used by Thanos in the Marvel Comics universe which can be equipped with 6 Infinity Stones.
God of War

The treasure map titled "The Boat Captain's Key" is a reference to a boat captain in the original God of War. Instead of saving him from getting eaten by the Hydra, Kratos stole a key from around his neck and let him die.

At E3 2016, footage was shown of Atreus and Kratos crossing a bridge where they were subsequently attacked by draugrs and a troll from under said bridge. This fight does not happen at the bridge in the final version of the game and instead happens a little later into the game, but there is dialogue from Atreus after crossing that bridge that hints at this early version of the fight.

Attachment In issue 21 of IDW's Sonic the Hedgehog comic book, two characters on page 20 resemble Marinette Dupain-Cheng and Adrien Agreste, the main protagonists of the animated series "Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Car Noir". These characters would later appear again in "Sonic the Hedgehog Annual 2020" on page 7, itself a reference to the events of this issue.

In Chapter 3 Section 1 'Rose's Room - Pillow Fort', players will come across a pillow alcove towards the left of the main path that features two action figures with interactive buttons. The action figures themselves are actually the two playable protagonists Leo & Vincent from Hazelight Studios' other project A Way Out. If both players stomp both buttons at the same time, a unique dialogue cutscene between Leo & Vincent will play. After the dialogue, an achievement/trophy 'Plastic Prison Breakers' is earned with the description, "They had no way out."

While the protagonist of Yakuza: Like a Dragon, Ichiban Kasuga, is commonly stated to have debuted in the 2018 game Ryu Ga Gotoku Online, he actually was first revealed in a trailer for the game Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise, which is considered a spin-off of the Yakuza/Like a Dragon franchise. This trailer aired almost a year before Ryu Ga Gotoku Online and is notable as Ichiban does not appear in Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise.

In one of Mimir's many dialogues, he mentions a story about Kratos once entering into a tournament and lists off a few character descriptions that match up with those who would be seen in PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, Sony's attempt at making a Super Smash Bros.-style clone. Kratos even seems ashamed saying, "I would not speak of this", possibly referencing the poor reception it garnered from critics and fans.

Attachment In a rare instance of Kingdom Hearts being referenced outside of KH-related Disney media, the Kingdom Key and Sora's hair can be seen within Sweet Pete’s assortment of cartoon props in the 2022 film "Chip & Dale: Rescue Rangers". An interesting detail about this cameo is that Sora's hair appears to have been traced or taken from DeviantArt user kimbolie12's fan art of Sora from Kingdom Hearts III.

Attachment In the 2020 graphic novel "Earthworm Jim 2: Fight the Fish!", Jim is given a shiny piece of aluminum foil, to which Jim refers to as "shiny entertainment," and Princess What-Her-Name comments on the "odd interplay of words." This is a reference to Shiny Entertainment, the company that created the Earthworm Jim series, and Interplay Entertainment, the company that bought out the Earthworm Jim series in the late 1990s.

In a mirror match intro with Liu Kang, after one asks what happened to his Kitana, the other will mention that an "evil clown" tricked him into taking her life, a nod to the Injustice series, referencing how Joker tricked Superman into killing Lois Lane.

Attachment In 2019, a YouTube user by the name of MickeySerbia posted a now-deleted video showing that Sans' voice grunting was most likely sourced from a snippet of Patrick Star saying "maybe it's the way you're dressed" in the SpongeBob SquarePants episode "Something Smells"; specifically, the grunt comes from the "ay" in "maybe." This information was further popularized when the SoundCloud account UNDERTALE OST: Recreated made and published the same discovery later that year, independent of MickeySerbia. While Toby Fox did not comment on the discovery, waveform comparisons between the SoundCloud post and Sans' voice grunting shows that the two are nearly identical apart from a slight delay in the former.
