The Bokujō Monogatari series, as it's originally known in Japan, which translates to "Farm Story", was known in the West as Harvest Moon up until 2014 where it was changed to Story of Seasons. This was because Western localization of the series was handed over to XSEED, a subsidiary of Marvelous AQL who owns Bokujō Monogatari, instead of to Natsume, who had been localizing the series in the West since the very first title. Because Natsume owned the trademark for Harvest Moon and not Marvellous, Natsume decided to create their own series of original games under the Harvest Moon name, prompting XSEED to rename the Bokujō Monogatari series in the West to Story of Seasons.

Attachment A mother from Gilber, AZ started a grass-roots campaign in 1996 (2 years after the game's initial release) that resulted in the game being pulled from various stores nationwide. The controversy started when her 11-year old son executed Chaos' "Golden Shower" fatality in which Chaos finishes his opponent off by urinating on them.

Time Warner Interactive, the publisher of the game, dismissed the claim because the mother went straight to the media and not to them or the developer Atari. They proved their point when they re-submitted the game to the ESRB board for another rating, but the board stuck to it's original "T" (Teen) rating and called the mother out for letting her 11-year old play a game that rated above his age.

"For me, it’s of course Cloud and Sephiroth. My concept for Sephiroth from the beginning was that everything about him would be kakkoii. His battle movements, and all his in-game scenes too. My image of the relationship between Cloud AND Sephiroth was that of Musashi Miyamoto and Sasaki Kojiro, and I had them in mind when I designed their appearance, as well as their swords. Of course Cloud is Musashi, and Sephiroth is Kojiro."
