The game was originally titled "Thrill Kill", but development was soon cancelled due to EA acquiring Virgin Interactive. EA refused to sell the publishing rights to the game until Activision had green-lit an idea for a fighting game based on the rap group the Wu-Tang Clan, which came to be known as "Wu-Tang: Shaolin Style."

A limited edition of the game was released in North America and Europe that came bundled with an exclusive novelty controller shaped like the Wu-Tang Clan's logo. It was noted for being cheap and lightweight, featuring all of the buttons on the original PlayStation controller, but lacking the vibration and the analog sticks featured on the DualShock controller.
