Franchise: Animal Crossing

The song K.K. Condor was originally named "Peru no Uta" (Song of Peru) in the Japanese games. It's believed this was changed to avoid referring to a real-world country, but despite that, it sounds very similar to the "Song of the Condor", a traditional song of the Andean people, who lived in what is now Peru.
Drakengard 3

A rejected idea for the game was to trick players into thinking that they missed a game from the series by calling it "Drag-On Dragoon 4", and have the story search for the "missing piece" of the series.

Another idea was to have the game set in a contemporary setting, following the adventures of a Japanese high school girl who calls for her dragon through her cellphone.
Drakengard 3

Takamasa Shiba presented the idea of creating a sequel to Drakengard 2 to Taro Yoko a number of years prior to the release of Drakengard 3. Yoko felt that he wasn't up to the task at the time and refused to work on the title. He was planning to continue expanding the Nier continuity, but his plans were cut short when ##Cavia## disbanded and Nier's producer, Yousuke Saito, became busy managing Dragon Quest X.

Attachment The weapon "Skald's Song" was originally known as the Devolapopola in the Japanese version of the game. The original version of the story included the names of the sisters, Dobo and Popo. This story was the main inspiration for the characters Devola and Popola in the spin-off Nier.

Attachment There is a cut location called Singing Mountain that was originally going to appear in the Prehistoric era. It also includes an unused song sharing the same name. The dungeon and accompanying song ended up being cut because the dungeon itself didn't contain much, nor did it advance the story.
Donkey Kong Barrel Blast

The game was originally in development for the GameCube, under the working title of "DK Bongo Blast". As its name implied, the game could be played using the Donkey Kong Bongos controller. However, due to the GameCube becoming an obsolete platform, the game was moved over to be a Wii title.
Halo 2

Attachment The Mongoose was originally intended to be put into Halo 2, but was cut and later reworked for Halo 3. The Mongoose prototype did not fulfil Bungie's quality expectations for Halo 2.
LEGO Island

Lego Island had a large quantity of content that was planned, but never inserted into the game. Content ranges from entering every building including Pirate's Cove, expansion packs that would allow the player to visit an undersea location, and the helicopter as a more viable form of transportation. Most content was cut due to time, budget, and technology constraints.
Kirby Family

Attachment A program titled "Kirby Family" (a spiritual successor of Mario Family) was planned to be released for the Game Boy Color. The game was showcased at Spaceworld 2001, but the plans to retail it outside of the event for 6,800 yen on September 10, 2001 were scrapped.

Attachment According to creative directer, Taro Yoko, Arioch's character was roughly inspired by Ritsuko Akagi from Neon Genesis Evangelion, and was entirely his idea.
Hebereke no Pair Pair Wars

Attachment There were plans for a puzzle game titled Hebereke's Pair Pair Wars, in which the player would have to clear tiles by pairing them up. It was intended to be released around 1996 for the Neo Geo, but was cancelled for unknown reasons.

Sonic Adventure 2

In the final game, Sonic wore SOAP shoes instead of his buckle shoes seen in previous games. However, during development, Sonic was shown to still be wearing his buckle shoes. This can be seen in early screenshots, and the E3 2000 trailer. Remnants of this can be seen in the final game. In the first cutscene of the Hero Story, when Sonic jumps out the helicopter, he is wearing the buckle shoes, but by the end, he is wearing the SOAP shoes. This error was fixed in the GameCube port.
Grand Theft Auto IV

A restaurant was planned to appear in the game called "Ping's". Audio associated with the restaurant still exists within the game's files.

Joe Kucan, the actor for Kane, wasn't originally going to have the role. Kucan created video footage of himself to use as a place holder for a scene, however his performance was positively received during play testing, and so he was kept on for the role.
The Godfather

Francis Ford Coppola (film director of the original Godfather trilogy) was not consulted or even informed about the development of the game. He later went on to say that he felt the game was mishandled, stating:

"They use the characters everyone knows, and they hire those actors to be there, and only to introduce minor characters. And then for the next hour they shoot and kill each other, I had absolutely nothing to do with the game. I disapprove. I think it's a misuse of film".
Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble

Attachment A sequel to Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble was being developed for the GameCube and was even shown at Spaceworld 2001. The game was supposed to demonstrate how the Game Boy Advance could be used with the GameCube as a controller. The game used a special cartridge in the Game Boy Advance to detect tilting. Kirby was removed as the mascot, and the game was reworked as 'Roll-o-Rama'. It's unknown why the project was cancelled.

A sequel to the game was planned, which was set to be "more insane" according to the game's director, Adrian Chmielarz. The idea was abandoned after the mediocre sales of the first title.
