U.N. Squadron was originally released in Japan under the name Area 88, as it was a licensed game based on the 1979 manga series of the same name. Despite the international version changing the name, removing religious references, and changing plot elements to dissociate itself from the manga, the characters, iconography (i.e. the flaming unicorn emblem used by Kazama Shin), and fighter planes originating from the manga remain intact.
