According to multiple developers on the game and figures involved with the singer, Michael Jackson was initially brought in during development to compose music for the game, even though there is no mention of his name in the game's credits. There are differing accounts describing his involvement, mainly that he spent four weeks at a recording studio in Los Angeles composing the songs with his personal sound team, as well as claims from senior Sega staff that any claims or arrangements regarding Jackson's involvement were made without their knowledge or never formally contracted. It has been separately claimed that Jackson went uncredited because of child sexual abuse allegations that arose around that time, leading to his termination and all of the music being reworked, as well as claims that he was supposedly unhappy with how the songs sounded due to the lack of optimal sound reproduction on the Genesis. The game's soundtrack is believed to be a mix of musical contributions by Jackson, members of his personal sound team, and the Sega Sound Team. Two notable examples include the theme to the IceCap Zone, which strongly resembled an unreleased track from 1984 by the band The Jetzons (which Jackson associate Bradley Buxer was a member of), as well as the game's credits theme, which Jackson was said to have later reworked into his 1996 single "Stranger in Moscow".
