Despite appearing low-budget and amateurish, the unauthorized browser game Pokéman Shooting Range was actually developed by film studio Threshold Entertainment, who were best known for co-producing the 1990's film adaptations of the Mortal Kombat series, and for producing the critically panned 2012 animated film Foodfight! The browser game was released on Threshold's website in the early 2000's as part of a subsite called "Pokémon Must Be Destroyed", and was inspired by studio founder Lawrence Kassanoff's extreme distaste towards Pokémon during the height of its popularity. The portal produced assorted animated and live-action videos showing a Pikachu plush doll being destroyed in different ways, with viewers being given the choice to vote on how the plush doll would be destroyed the following week. The site later shortened its name to "Must Be Destroyed" and expanded its targets to include 1990's pop culture figures deemed "annoying", such as the Backstreet Boys and the Taco Bell chihuahua mascot Gidget. The original Pokémon iteration of the website attracted a minor level of media buzz before the browser game was produced, and recruited two famous martial artists - Sammo Hung and Bruce Lee's daughter Shannon Lee - to film themselves "killing" Pokémon merchandise.
