According to Mario and Star Fox series creator Shigeru Miyamoto, the creation of spin-off games in the 2020s centered around other Mario characters like Peach and Yoshi, as well as the 2026 remake of Star Fox 64, were all created as a kind of case-by-case brand synergy in tandem with the development of licensed Nintendo films created by animation studio Illumination:

"I don't decide everything about the lineup, but we did discuss that 'we have an idea to include Fox in the script for [The Super Mario Galaxy Movie], so we definitely want a new Star Fox game.' [...] Sometimes things get decided after we've discussed them. We started working on the [The Super Mario Bros. Movie] and Princess Peach: Showtime! around the same time, and we talked about things like, 'If we have this game, shouldn't Peach be more energetic in the movie too?' It was decided early on that Yoshi would appear in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, so we decided to make a Yoshi game, and that's how development of Yoshi and the Mysterious Book began."

Could be wrong though about Star Fox, but I still don't it was a good idea for the series to have nothing on the Switch 1, I do know however that there would've been some games originally intended for the Switch 1 that got moved to the Switch 2. It's good to finally know either way about how Princess Peach: Showtime came to be, basically being to Peach what Luigi's Mansion is to Luigi, though it's still unknown of how her own game that could possibly spawn sequels was chosen to be about theatre of all things.

This can't be right in terms of why Yoshi & The Mysterious Book and the recent Star Fox game exists, since I don't think Yoshi's Crafted World would've been completed without deciding on what would be next for Yoshi, nor do I think they'd have done more then one game from Yoshi's sub series on the same system. And of course Miyamoto was always intent on there being a new Star Fox game somewhere down the line and wouldn't let the series stay dead forever, this most recent game in fact probably started off as a Switch 1 game in fact before being moved to the Switch 2. Pity though they left the Switch 1 without anything at all from Star Fox, not even a port of Star Fox Zero, least they could've done was a re-release of something to fill the gap. I can understand though that it was best to avoid having similar sales to Star Fox Zero probably based on when it released, but I do know for certain that Fox's inclusion though from another franchise in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie would've been to promote the new Star Fox game.
