Franchise: Metroid

Attachment In F-Zero X for the N64, the pilot 'Jody Summer' has an impeccable resemblance to the ending-screen version of Samus from the original Metroid.
Dark Souls

Unlike the majority of characters throughout Dark Souls, Sieglinde of Catarina, the daughter of Siegmeyer, is speculated to be a human. All the human characters met in Dark Souls are either Undead, who are reborn at Bonfires at the cost of their humanity until they are completely Hollow, or are non-human in some other regard. This makes her quest to find her father all the more treacherous, given the fact that the moment she dies, she is dead for good.

Subtle references and similarities to Kentaro Miura's manga "Berserk" can be found hidden in the game. The earliest example that can be discovered is the blacksmith Rickert, the name of a character in Berserk who was also a blacksmith.

Beatrice the Witch, who can be summoned twice as a Phantom for boss fights, bears a striking resemblance to the Berserk character Schierke.

The main character of Berserk, Guts, can also be seen referenced in a few different ways. A much more subtle reference is Black Iron Tarkus, a character summoned as a Phantom and seen later as a corpse in Anor Londo. His black armor and greatsword are said to be absurdly heavy and only able to be donned by him due to his incredible strength. Guts, while his armor is somewhat differently designed, is known for wielding weapons of absurd weight, and was also known for wearing black armor. What's more, the design of the Dark Souls Greatsword resembles the design of one of Guts' earliest swords.

The second reference is contained within the Dark Souls DLC in the form of Artorias, the Abysswalker. Some similarities include the design of Artorias' armor and Guts' Berserker Armor, their swords' abilities to damage demons and ghosts, their symbolism and references to wolves, their mangled left arms and their losses of sanity (though for varying reasons). In addition to that, many of Artorias' poses both for the DLC promotions and for in-game cutscenes greatly resemble official artwork of Guts from Berserk.
Demon's Souls
1
Throughout the game, mention is made of several heroes of Boletaria who were devoured by the fog along with King Allant. When Allant returned he, as well as all his men, were said to actually be demons taking their forms. In World 1-4, the Black Phantoms of the original heroes block the path.

Alfred, the Knight of the Tower, became the Tower Knight in 1-2. Curiously, this phantom also wears the armor of the Twin Fangs, Vallarfax and Biorr, the corpse of the latter supposedly in Mildred's excecution grounds in 1-1.

Metas, the Knight of the Lance, became the Penetrator in 1-3. Curiously, both the demon and Black Phantom use an incredibly long sword, not a lance.

Long Bow Oolan is left out, though it is said Oolan led a legion of archers, a characteristic similar to the legion-like qualities of the boss Phallanx in 1-1. This is debatable, though, seeing as Phallanx's legion actually uses spears and shields, and its soul forms the Scraping Spear that Alfred's Black Phantom uses.

The Pisaca in the dungeon in the Duke's Archives are actually humans captured by the Channelers for Seath's experiments, explaining why these creatures drop a fairly consistent supply of Humanity. Two in particular each drop a different Miracle. When considering the fact that Rhea of Thorolund's Hollow can be found in the dungeon after all her Miracles are purchased, and the fact a corpse in the dungeon is wearing the Maiden Set that Rhea wears, it can be speculated that the two docile Pisacas are former Maidens, and that Rhea was going to receive the same fate.
Final Fantasy XIII

Attachment Lightning's hairstyle resembles the shape of the crystallized Cocoon. This can also be seen in the game's logo.
Secret of Mana
1
Attachment An NPC on the isle where you find the Sea Hare's Tail claims, "This here island's really a turtle shell!" If you ride flammie above the isle, there is a visible shadow of a head and fins. This turtle may actually be Booskaboo from Seiken Densetsu 3 whom the party travels on before the acquisition of Flammie. Figuring that Seiken Densetsu 3 is a prequel to Secret of Mana, this may hold true.
Bayonetta
1
Attachment Bayonetta's Bracelet of Time shares attributes with Devil May Cry's Bangle of Time and Viewtiful Joe's V Watch. All three items look similar and freeze time. Additionally, the description for Bracelet of Time and Bangle of time reference Dante's parents as the creators, so they might be the same item. Hideki Kamiya was also the director of all three games so this similarity may be intentional
Bayonetta
1
Attachment There are two characters named Enzo appearing in Bayonetta and Devil May Cry. Both characters support Bayonetta and Dante as an informant. There is proof that both Enzos are the same person.

In the Bayonetta art book, there is a picture of Enzo playing poker with someone while Bayonetta and Rodan are in the background. Enzo's opponent is shown to have lost a sword, two handguns, and a red coat. These are all trademarks relating to Dante. This not only shows that the Enzo that helped Dante was the same Enzo that helped Bayonetta, but successfully connects the Bayonetta series to the Devil May Cry series.

The accessory Immortal Marionette bears a striking resemblance to the Marionette enemies from the original Devil May Cry. Hideki Kamiya was the director for both Devil May Cry and Bayonetta, so the resemblance is probably intentional.
SaGa Frontier

Attachment The Thunder Dragon enemy strongly resembles the final boss of Secret of Mana. It is purple with magenta hair, four legs, and shares the same body shape.

Dante used the name Tony Redgrave as an alias in his early days of demon slaying. When asked about the name, director Hideki Kamiya stated that "Antonio Redgrave was a journalist that Dante respected, so he used it as his fake name during his days as a mercenary..." In Bayonetta, Luka's father, Antonio Redgrave, was a world famous journalist that documented supernatural events, people, and places. It's very likely that the two Tonys may be the same person.
Deadly Premonition
1
Attachment Deadly Premonition originally started development as a multi-platform game under the name of Rainy Woods. However when the game was teased at Tokyo Game Show 2007, many people commented that it looked incredibly similar to the television series Twin Peaks. The game was then delayed and a lot of the elements in the game were either scrapped or entirely reworked to make it less similar to that of the TV show.

Attachment Before destroying the support pillars and causing the fourth floor to collapse onto the third, the four rooms in the center of Eagle's Tower's third floor are entirely different, consisting primarily of an extremely large pit. Of these rooms, the upper two are inaccessible and never normally seen in-game. It appears the one on the left was meant to be used, but due to the way the crystal switches work, the blocks controlled by them will always deny you entry. And even if it was accessible, the pit is too open and can easily lead to getting trapped on the second floor. Interestingly, while the room is inaccessible, it was still updated after the first version.

To the right of that room is one that was definitely never intended to be used at all, consisting only of a "down" staircase leading up to the fourth floor, presumably for testing purposes. It's also the only way to get up there. (Leaving the 4F area in any direction will take you to blank "default" rooms.)

These rooms are also present in the DX version.
Resident Evil 6
1
Leon's campaign in Resident Evil 6 begins at Ivy University located in Tall Oaks. A university by the same name is also featured in an earlier Capcom game, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations where its location was never stated. Both being games developed by the same company, this is unlikely to be a coincidence.
Franchise: Mortal Kombat
1
Animalities actually started off as a fan rumor. There were fake pictures of how to turn certain characters into animals as a fatality move. The team were aware of this rumor and decided to incorporate Animalities into Mortal Kombat 3.

However, it was dropped after MK3 because of the difficulties in changing one 3D model into another.

Attachment When you encounter your rival in Pokemon Tower, he will ask you why you're in the tower to begin with because you don't have any dead Pokemon to mourn over. This implies that he has lost a Pokemon and has come to pay homage to it or lay it to rest. Furthermore, his Raticate from the previous battle on the S.S. Anne is replaced by an Exeggcute, Growlithe, or Gyrados, depending on the starter Pokemon you chose. This seems to imply that his Raticate somehow died between the battles against him on the S.S. Anne and in Pokemon Tower; common fan speculation states that the Raticate died from wounds received from the battle on the S.S. Anne.

In the Ruins of Alph, the PokéGear will lose signal. Accessing the Radio function in this area will, instead of giving you the normal radio songs, give you a haunting sound, which is generally accepted to be the cries of the Unown.

During the "Bring Your Daughter to Work Day" science-fair, you will find a giant potato that is growing to the ceiling. If you look around the potato, you will find that it was made by Chell and she used a "special ingredient from daddy's work." This indicates that Chell was the daughter of an Aperture Science employee.
Donkey Kong
subdirectory_arrow_right Popeye (Franchise)
1
Attachment Shigeru Miyamoto originally wanted to do a Popeye game, specifcially based on the 1934 cartoon A Dream Walking, where Popeye and Bluto fight over Olive Oyl as she sleepwalks through a construction site, but couldn't get the license. He would later use the characters as inspirations with Mario taking the role of Popeye, Pauline as Olive Oyl and Donkey Kong as Bluto. Nintendo would eventually release a Popeye game a year after Donkey Kong in 1982.
