If three holes are dug around the player while near a certain part of the river, the camera will shake violently and allow the player to trip into the river and walk around if they are wearing a King Tut's mask or has bad luck that day. This can be done to allow public works projects to be put into the river or ocean, as well as flowers to be planted there.

In round 7, when you defeat two of the bosses, you are rewarded with the key to the exit early. If you defeat the last boss of the round, the key disappears, leaving you stuck in the level. It is unclear if this is a glitch in the programing or an intentional design for the level.

Sandover Village can be accessed and explored though a glitch in the first cutscene. However, since the area was only meant to be used in said cutscene, the village does not have any characters and the levels Forbidden Jungle, Geyser Rock, Misty Island, Sentinel Beach, and Fire Canyon are inaccessible as there is nothing to call up for these areas.

Secret of Mana

In the NTSC version, there is actually a way to obtain the Mana Sword before the final battle without the use of a cheat device. First, once the Flammie Drum is obtained and the sword is level 8, go to a small isle of the coast north of Ice Country due west of the Ice Palace. Neko will be there. The player should save at Neko, soft reset and start a new adventure. When the player enters the Mantis Ant fight, perform a soft reset once Elliot finishes his lines and reload the save file in Ice Country. Instead of Ice Country, the entire party will be in the Mantis Ant fight. Defeat him and Jema will give the party a Sword Orb. Give this orb to Watts to forge and the player should have the Mana Sword.

Due to how high up the Libra ship part is, there is a chance that it could fall and bounce out of bounds with no way to get it. Since ship parts do not reset when the day ends, the Libra will be stuck there unless the player resets the game without saving. This also locks the player from getting the best or good endings that playthrough since the Libra is a mandatory ship part.

Due to a programming oversight, in the first level, "Courier", of the Nintendo 64 version, it's possible to successfully complete the level quickly, without completing all the objectives and failing the mission. Before collecting your equipment from the safety deposit box, either turn the alarm on or harm a guard or civilian without killing them. Then collect your equipment from the box and exit out of the building.

In Chapter 7, when a hooded Mr. Saturn gives you back the Courage Badge, he says goodbye to the player and walks a few spaces offscreen where it is supposed to stop and disappear. However, due to a bug, he remains in that spot, just a few spaces away from the player. Itoi liked this bug, so he decided to keep it there and write some text for him.
Donkey Kong 64

It was originally believed that the only reason the game needed the Expansion Pak to run was because it fixed a game-breaking bug that caused the 4 megabyte game cartridge to randomly crash. Rare couldn't find any other solution, so they bundled the Expansion Pak with the game, costing them a lot of money. They still don't know what caused the bug. According to software engineer Chris Marlow:

"There was a bug that caused the game to randomly crash that only occurred in the 4meg-only version ... and they couldn't find out what it was, so they had to shift with the memory card in it for free and it cost them a fortune."

However, developer Mark Stevenson claimed that while there was a game-breaking bug, it only affected one hardware revision of the Nintendo 64 that would be resolved on later models. He claims that the actual reason the Expansion Pak was required was because Rare's management instructed the game's developers to support it early in development to accommodate advanced graphical effects like dynamic lighting. Stevenson speculated that these two stories were likely conflated into one, creating the memory leak rumor that persisted for years.

Ultimately, Simon Craddick, one of the four engineers who worked on the Expansion Pak's implementation into Donkey Kong 64, claimed in a Facebook group that the only thing the Expansion Pak actually did was add vertex lighting to the levels.

Super Mario Bros.

It's possible to access an additional 256 worlds in the game through a glitch. There are two methods to access them via the Japanese Famicom version:
• Having a copy of both Super Mario Bros. and Tennis, first insert the Mario cartridge and then remove the game at the title screen whilst it's still on. Then insert the Tennis cartridge, and during a match, remove the game and place Super Mario Bros. back in. Reset the console and at the title screen hold down A and press Start.
• The second method involves the Family Basic cartridge and the keyboard peripheral. By inputting a series of code and then swapping the cartridge with Super Mario Bros., reset the console and then hold down A and press Start, which will grant players access to one of the 256 glitch worlds.

The Tennis method can also be done with the western version of Super Mario Bros. but only on the NES-101 model.

Each of the worlds appear to reuse assets from the other levels, resulting in various bugged stages. The Tennis game method is possible presumably due to both it and Super Mario Bros. using the same addresses, but don't place the same check values. Leaving the power on also retains the RAM and the previous check value remains.
