According to Tomoya Asano, Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda had personally expressed interest in making better use of the HD-2D style, leading Team Asano to consider remaking past titles. They compiled a list of titles both Squaresoft and Enix had released for the Super Famicom, and sorted it out into three categories (titles suitable for HD-2D, titles that weren't, and miscellaneous titles such as mahjong games that wouldn't work) before presenting it to Matsuda. Live A Live was recommended as the most suitable title, with its remake releasing in 2022. The second place title, ActRaiser, would also receive a remake in 2021 in the form of Actraiser Renaissance, albeit not in the HD-2D style.

Unlike the original version, the remake uses a lyrical version of the song "Go! Go! Buriki Daioh!" from the Near Future chapter. The lyrical version, performed in English and Japanese by musician Hironobu Kageyama (known for his work on numerous anime themes, including "Cha-La Head-Cha-La" from Dragon Ball Z), is credited to "Famitsu readers feat. Shimamoto Kazuhiko". This is due to the second and third lyrics of the song being solicited from readers as part of a project from Famitsu magazine around the original game's release.
