According to Yoshiki Watabe, the game was originally going to have the hero slime have a sword and shield, and throw a boomerang. When they looked at the concept, they thought, "This isn't really a slime game. It's just like a blue version of Link!" Instead of making a Zelda like game, they decided to focus on what a slime could do that other characters couldn't.

There is a tank called "DQ Swords" in the game that has the tagline "The Revolution is coming! Wee!" This is believed to be a foreshadowing to the game Dragon Quest Swords on the Wii. During the start of Rocket Slime's localization to the west, the Wii was still likely code named the "Revolution."

Mt. Krakatroda's temple has pictures of Trode, from Dragon Quest 8, caring for his daughter Medea in her horse form. This is also the location where you receive the alchemy pot, Krak Pot, implying that this is the same pot used by the hero during Dragon Quest 8, and as such is the same world.
