In 2018, following the game's PlayStation 4 release, dataminers discovered references to at least ten characters that had not yet become playable in the base game in a list of potential Manikin enemies. Five of these characters would later be added as DLC, but the other five would go unused after the game stopped receiving updates. Of the five unused characters, three of them were previously playable in Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy (Gilgamesh from Final Fantasy V, Laguna Loire from Final Fantasy VIII, and Prishe from Final Fantasy XI), while the remaining two would have been new to the series (Zack Fair from Final Fantasy VII and Vivi Ornitier from Final Fantasy IX).
