Gradius began development as a sequel to Konami's 1981 shoot 'em up Scramble under the name Scramble 2. According to director Hiroyasu Machiguchi, the decision to make it a horizontal shoot 'em up game was because they wanted to reuse as much of the materials for Scramble as possible during development.

Gradius = Nemesis, Salamander = Life Force, Gradius II is NOT Gradius 2, Gradius II is Vulcan Venture, Gradius 2 = Nemesis 90 Kai, Nemesis 3 is a spinoff of Gradius II, etc. A seperate Nemesis was made for the Game Boy with a direct sequel called Gradius: The Interstellar Assault, and then the two games were renamed Gradius and Gradius II a few years later in a compilation.
