Astal's spine did not feature the game's name, which may have lead to its poor sales in the US. Retailers would have had to display the case forward facing, rather than to its side as standard.

Astal makes a number of cameo appearances throughout Archie Comics' Sonic the Hedgehog comic book series.
In issue #50 he is seen in a fight between the Overlanders versus the Mobians, alongside his bird.
On the cover of issue #51 he is seen in the crowd looking up at the main cast.
On the cover of issue #125 he is seen holding the "5" card.

There's an unused sprite in the game's data of what appears to be Mario, though the sprite's palette is more in line with that of his original outfit of red dungarees with a blue shirt.
