Collection: Oddworld

Abe's species, the Mudokon, are descended from birds, as evidenced by their feather-like hair and fragile bone structure. As such, small birds have served as a recurring symbol throughout the Oddworld series. They most prominently appear through Bird Portals, the health bars in Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee and Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty, and some moments where Abe is spiritually teleported in the form of a flock of birds. According to series creator Lorne Lanning, he thought of the birds used for the Bird Portals as white doves, which are frequently used as a symbol of peace despite their tendency to become territorial and violent against members of its own species.

The name of Abe's species, Mudokons, is based off the continent they are native to and the main setting of the series, Mudos. The name "Mudos" is a tweaked version of the word "Modos", which is an anagram for "Sodom", a city that has been mentioned in various Religious Texts, like the Bible and the Quran.

Abe was named after Abraham from the Book of Genesis in the Bible. Abe also receives a message from his Ancestors, much like how Abraham receives a message from God, both of which involve putting an end to slavery.

Throughout the OddWorld series, the majority of the characters have been voiced by members of the development team OddWorld Inhabitants, including series co-creator Lorne Lanning, who voiced various characters including Abe himself.
